Should I purchase the Beta2 or wait for the full release? I'm in a hell all of my own here. I have seen the latest Youtube vids of this awesome sim and am awe-struck again by the detail thats gone into this high tech sim. Well I will be pacing around for a while thinking about this...sooo tempted you know....aarghh ! :bounce:

Welcome to the forums!:thumbup: You will probably be happy to hear that you don't have to choose. Basically, you're buying the finished game, and ED is throwing in access to the Beta for free. Yes, you can have both!:D:thumbup: Now go have some fun with your new Hawg.:joystick:

I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!"

This is my first BETA game experience. I’ve done software testing before but never paid to do it. :helpsmilie:

For me, there were two questions;

Do I want to fly the sim now or later?

TBH the KA-50 was getting old for me. That’s not a criticism of the sim bit more a limitation of the role of the actual craft. Hiding behind a hill at 7kn range picking off enemies then skulking behind another hill was super cool for a long time, but the constraints of the weapons systems and sensor suite began to feel limiting to me. The demos and posts about the hog were very tempting, as along with the F-15 the hog was my favourite plane in LOMAC/FC. I never did get on with the Su-25t as I found the Vikhr implementation almost suicidal, (lase, launch......continue to lase whilst having to head straight towards enemy....get shot down). The a-10c has much greater standoff potential to both, making it very attractive to me.

Do I pay once and get the game for "free" when released?

I’m going to buy this sim anyway right? Unless ED releases a dud, which by their track record doesn’t really seem likely does it? (This is where all the “blind faith” arguments start and end). So based on the fact that I have a pretty good intention of buying when released anyway then why wait? If I buy now, I don’t have to pay later and I can get my impatient hands on the hog right away.

There are caveats sure;

  • It’s a beta and therefore...... (Read up on what ‘beta’ means if unsure ;)).
  • None optimised and with many features still to be fixed / tweaked (as above).
  • We have no schedule of upcoming updates. They appear monthly, ( so far).
  • There aint to change-log so new releases mean a forum flurry and a few days to determine whether what you are experiencing is due to bugs, your hardware or your untrained fingers.

But the benefits are IMO very attractive

  • You buy the beta; you got the game when it’s released. Whenever it’s released.
  • You get to start learning the hog now so when it IS released.....you will be very handy.
  • As a simmer, you get a whole new deadly arsenal to play with.
  • As a simmer you get a whole new advanced flight model to fly with.
  • As a simmer you get to take part in the evolution and perfection of what has got to be THE biggest release of the year at least.
  • The forums are a very friendly and informative place where if you do have a question, (and aren’t too annoying about it ;) you will get help).
  • If, for any reason, (and I am touching a scots pine here), it isn’t released in 2010, you can STILL FLY over Xmas as you have the beta.
  • I just can’t see myself getting bored in this sim as the A-10c is far far more versatile than the KA-50 was and the new JTAC systems, etc. bring another whole dimension.
  • This sim is HUUUUUUUGE. We are now a month in and onto the second beta. Some guys are very very proficient right now and are posting fantastic vids on YouTube, (checkout ExcessiveHeadspace’s & Tigerpwrr Channels). These guys are helping the rest of us get to grips with systems that are modelled with an extremely high level of fidelity and are somewhat daunting to get your head around from the manual only, (depending on how you like to learn). If things go on as they have begun, by the time the games goes gold, there will be a wealth of information and help out there for budding pilots. More than I have seen for any game at this stage of development.

-----------------

Anyway, that’s my opinion. I bought, I downloaded, I play, I learn, I post, and after a month, I am still learning and getting better every single day. I haven’t played any other sim since. Now that’s saying something for a beta isn’t it? :thumbup:

I will buy DCS A-10c as soon as it comes out on hard copy, unfortunately I don't have unlimited downloads so I can't get the beta. Sucks that I have to wait till it's released which will probably be some time next year, but maybe I'll beable to get a new pc and trackir before then so I can actually play it as it was intended

You are not buying a Beta game...you are PRE Purchasing the Sim, that means you already bought the game and the open Beta availability is just a bonus for those who pre-purchased the game. You can partizipate the open beta, but you do not have to do.

There are caveats sure;

Dont care about those things you ´ve listed. The basic thing is already mentioned in my reply above.

But the benefits are IMO very attractive

You care way to much about the Beta or not Beta thing. If you wonna fly the hog, get it. If you wont, so be it. Thats all.. No need for start huge listed about the sense and nonsense about the open beta release...sorry: Pre-purchase release with open beta.

You can pre-purchase the SIM immediately which allows you access to play the Beta version and subsequent Beta-Updates to release. In other words, you can install the downloaded Beta version - you will however have to pre-purchase to obtain the relevant activation code in order to play the SIM.

As regards to the final release, herewith excerpt from the F.A.Q.:

Q: When will DCS: A-10C Warthog be released?

A: Unless something unforseen happens or problems occur during development and testing we hope to release DCS: A-10C Warthog for digital download before the end of 2010.

159th_Viper, any idea how long after the final release the boxed version might hit the shelves of the dcs online store?

Honestly would have no idea, M8. Would have thought that it would be as soon as possible, though. All depends on the logistics and marketing strategy.

Again - all pure guesswork as I am not privvy at all to the internal workings of TFD/ED :)

I would say Black Shark could be a good reference. But that is also just guessing on my side.

Only argument I have for you coolts is this. Yes, you get to learn the sim before hand. I have learned a lot of the systems but I only have maybe 20-40 hours tops in game. I am not trying to become an expert though. When the sim is released it will not have hundreds of new missions and campaigns. It will have many of the same missions and campaigns from the betas. So, if BS got boring after playing the same missions over and over, so will A10. Especially if you have already mastered most of the campaigns. So, you will have paid $60 for the beta and got most of the game under your belt before the unbugged retail version. You dealt with bad mavs, bad flir, bad gbu12s, bad PAC, bad EAC, bad canopy, bad seat height, and all the other bugs of the beta. Instead if you wait, you spend $60 to get the much less bugged retail version. You can dive right into the training missions without having to figure out what button needs to be pressed to get it to continue, or any headaches like that.

Not to say I regret getting the beta though. Its just like buying most title's release versions on launch and fighting through the early adoption days of endless patches and hotfixes. Only difference is this is called a beta pre purchase bonus and not a launch day version. By the time both marketing options are smoothed out to perfection, you have beaten the game and done all the surprising and exciting things and all that is left is pwning noobs by camping on a sniper hill overlooking the spawn point.

:D

Again, not regretting my purchase, just posting my thoughts. They are mostly not worth the read so sorry if you spent your time reading. :P

Meh, pretty much my thoughts too. I wouldn't mind putting in a little time to help find bugs, but dammed if I'm going to pay good money to do it. Why would I pay to find bugs? They should be paying me.

You are pre-purchasing the SIM with the added bonus of access to the Open-Beta ;)

Nobody is under any obligation whatsoever to 'find bugs'. On the contrary, what you do with the Open-Beta is entirely up to you. That said - what's with the attitude? No need for that at all. Consider this a friendly warning ;)

I pre-purchased the sim as well but I think I'll wait for the final release now. The patches being released and getting them working correctly is becoming frustrating. I love this sim but i'd rather wait until it less of a hassle.

The latest Beta 3 base version requires no patches. Straight download and install from main site.

In theory its not but in practice it seems to be. I did download both patches and apply, but that has caused issues. I will delete, clean and re download again. Lets hope patch 4 applies more smoothly.
