As the title states, just trying to see what you all are doing regarding the Warthog throttles. Are you flying with them locked together or unlocked?

Unlocked since you start the left engine first then the right. Just too much work latching them after every start then unlatching them before every start.

Just like DarkEagle, I have been unlatching for startup, and latching for flight. There seems to be more stability when latched.

I must confess I worry that flying unlatched will increase the very small amount of play in the throttles. Then again, overuse of the latching mechanism, leading to a part failure would be awful too.

I would love to hear from a TM Warthog design engineer regarding whether they envisioned the end user flying latched or unlatched.

Do any of the real world A-10 guys here know if the latch is present on the real throttle?

I also fly latched and unlatch before startup. I think you are supposed to fly latched, I mean why would you not? And I think even though on real throttles you dont see the same latching mechanism, you can still fly as if latched otherwise you'd get a lot of minor fluctuations in engine power. Cant imagine it works that way, pushing full throttle in reflex and then notice you only pushed the right one fully and you make the wrong maneuver.

I fly unlatched at all times and have not had problems with the plane having any yaw tendancy to one side or other. IRL Im pretty sure it would be a safety issue to latch them together. If an emergency situation were to take place like an engine fire, you would need to be able to manipulate the thottles independantly immediately and not be struggling to find the latch to unlock the throttles.

Yes I think that would make sense. But then I am just thinking about a plane like b-52 with 8 engines. How do they operate the throttle? Cant believe they are able to move all 8 levers simultaneously, or maybe four per pilot? Really no clue here just speculating.

There is no latch on the real throttles that i have.

I was just about to say, I don't think the real ones have a latch.

Personally, I enjoy "walking the throttles" too much to lock 'em and take the fun away!

That reminds me of a joke. F-16 pilot calls up tower and requests an urgent landing, engine running a bit rough. Tower says "no can do, got a B-25 on emergency with an engine out." Viper driver calls back "Oh yeah, the dreaded seven engine approach."

Unlatched throttles might be nice for AAR, effectively halves the throttle sensitivity for fine tuning speed.

If you look at the conveniently provided image, you can see two sets of knobs. The ones close together on the bottom can be spanned with one hand and are thus moved in concert. The upper knobs are further apart and are meant to be moved individually.

I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!"

Yeah I was thinking the same thing!

Yes, the same for me!

I have and will keep flying with them unlocked in the A10, because thats what the real hogdrivers have, and also I like it alot better unlocked.

For the short time I had the G940 I had them unlatched. I'm sure I will leave the Hog unlatched too.

The B-36 had 10 engines, so it would be the dreaded 9-engine approach. But then the F-16 would be flying in the wrong time period. The aircraft in question is a B-52.

And for setting the throttles on a B-52 you have a brilliant device installed for this very purpose, which makes sure that all the throttles are set to equal power settings during the take-off roll. It is usually installed in the right side of the cockpit and can be seen in many cockpit shots of the B-52, although it can be on the left side as well for some flights. Said device also fills out the log book after the flight and operates the radios...
