Do you know of a way to set it up so that only the voice comms will go through the headphones but all other sounds are in your external speakers?

I have the standard realtek HD audio. But my headphones are USB.

So technically I have two separate audio outputs. The headphones MIcrosoft Lifechat headset and the Realtek HD audio with speakers.

Do you know if they have some sort of option maybe in an config file or somewhere to separate audio from radio ops -> source 1 and all other sounds - source 2

Any thoughts?

nice idea. like in madden on the xbox, if you have a headset coaches instruction come from it, rest from the speakers.

very immersive

+1 for the idea

Well if you're using a 3rd party program like TeamSpeak for comms, just go into the settings of TS and change the output/playback device from your speakers to your headphones. Almost positive you can't separate the AI in-game comms from the rest of the sim though, if that's what you're asking.

How To Fix Your X-52's Rudder!

Posted (edited)

I used to use a multiple output pro audio sound board. It would have been possible to do what you asked. I used it along with a sidechain compressor that allowed the background sounds(jet engine/betty..) to get quieter as someone would speak on comms, then when they stop talking, the sound jet sounds gets to full loudness again.(similar to radio DJ's when they have music playing but can talk over it) It's a rather complicated setup for most. (i used the free software from www.reaper.fm to process it and a tascam board 8 outs)

I think 636 Castle has it right. I dont know if those two will conflict with each other.

Hmm a little too complex for me.

Are there actually ANY sims out there that'll do this? Voice comms through headset and engines / exterior sounds on the external speakers?

I want my den to rumble like a MOFO but I don't want the voices loud.

If you call FSX a sim, you can put all of the voice(ATC and missions) through a different audio output than the rest of the sounds(environment, cockpit, engines, etc). End result= voice in headset all other sound through speakers. If you're looking for a rumbling effect, try bolting one of these to your chair: http://www.thebuttkicker.com/gaming/index.htm

I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!"

If you use Teamspeak 3 this is possible but not as far as comms from AI in the game. Using TS3 with TARS and map the voice and mic through headset and just use your soundcard for your speakers will deliver the same effect. Very nice. Depending on your setup you may also have to tinker with audio settings in windows also.

I've also been able to do it all on just 1 soundcard that headphone and speaker outputs using analogue headset.

So what's TrackIR has to do with this... why is it in the thread title?

Install Teamspeak on a separate laptop, and plop it down next to you.

Don't even need that. Most motherboards have onboard sound so use mb sound for mic and TS and add-on card sound for game.

Because someone changed the thread title.....It used to be something about voice comms...TrackIR was never mentioned

i do this with my saitek aviator headset. It is not USB so i plug the headset into my Intel DG45ID Mobo onboard audio for comms and select the onboard audio in ts3 and the game utilizes my Soundblaster for piping through speakers.

Works great

The one angle to this discussion that has not been covered is what the other pilots on Teamspeak with you are gonna think of hearing your cockpit sounds when you are transmitting.

just make sure you have a decent mic. a decent headset will have a unidirectional mic - it wont pick up the game sounds at reasonable volumes.
