Bahger Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I've seen crew chiefs on these boards, weapons specialists, but I know from personal experience that r/l combat aviators hate to admit they fly PC sims. Will anyone break ranks...?
Yoni63 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Bahger, I was a member of a virtual air lines for about 6 years until recently. Initially our main line aircraft was the 747-200, then of course we moved up to the 400. We had a guy that had thousands of hours in the 747 as Captain, and had to retire due to medical reasons. He was around 65 years old. We used a Pirep software that recorded virtually EVERYTHING in your flight. I used to be amazed at his scores on his Pireps. It was refreshing to see him flying with us. I hope there are some combat pilots on here. It's definitely not a shame, good training in many aspects for them. Bahger Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 I have three very good friends who are F-16 pilots. To the last man, they make sure I know they hate, in the following, ascending, order: Falcon "The Right Stuff" "Top Gun" F-15 pilots (but not the F-15E pilots for some obscure reason) For years I have tortured one of them by insisting on showing him whatever sim I'm flying. He spends the first five minutes squirming and the next half hour drilling me in SAM evasion. 1
aaron886 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Be friends with Navy pilots.... they're cooler. They love Top Gun. :smilewink:

Sickdog Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I fly an EMB-135 Legacy private jet, and have been to both Tbilisi and Batumi in it. I can attest to the great job these guys did with the airport modeling... except the shorter runway in Tbilisi was closed down and turned into a taxiway last fall when I was there. 1 TM Warthog, Oculus Rift, Win10...
NoJoe Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I'm a flight instructor in Real Life, flying little Cessna 172s and the like... I know, it doesn't count. :( :P He spends the first five minutes squirming and the next half hour drilling me in SAM evasion. I would love to have someone sit me down and teach me real-life SAM evasion techniques! That would be so cool!! :D --NoJoe 1
Bahger Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 I'm a flight instructor in Real Life, flying little Cessna 172s and the like... I know, it doesn't count. :( :P Of course it counts! Me too, not an instructor but instrument-rated PP in the 172/182. The thing I like about the DCS A-10 is that the flight model is recognizable to a small-time pilot. It's not fly-by-wire and has limitations, of thrust, of airspeed and AOA. You have to trim it. You can't fly inverted or throw it around the sky. It feels like a "real" airplane.
Dugulus Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 (edited) I fly Lear 35's and 55's (and Lear 28 ). No military flying. But when coming home with no passengers I will fly a left overhead "tactical" approach on rare occasions. 250knots over the numbers at 800 feet 60 degree bank left. You'd be surprised how close you can keep it to the runway (yes, I know 200 knot limit in class c airspace, but tower gives permission to keep the speed up). Its fun, and I know the tower likes watching it! This partially fills the part of me that wanted to fly in the military :) Edited March 13, 2011 by Dugulus 1
Shepski Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I fly Lear 35's... I used to fly Learjet 35s doing air ambulance work and we used to have a lot of fun in uncontrolled airspace with no patient and a willing nurse. :) Now I fly Boeing's... 737-200 and 300 1

Pyroflash Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I am a Private pilot flying the PA-28-181&140. I had a chance however to fly a King Air, and that was fantastic. I am very envious of all of you jet pilots and your super awesome planes :). 1 If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

ARM505 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 (edited) I don't think it's a shame at all to admit flying sims when you're a real pilot - maybe the military pilots are the last holdout's in this regard, but all of us (even the military!) have to fly RL simulators as part of our jobs - I've just finished a two day Prof check and LOFT (line orientated flight training) on the B734 (virtual!), and next week I'm doing my B737-800 conversion - once again without touching the real plane at all. The first time I really fly the type will be with passengers aboard, all none the wiser of course :) And a great many airlines use CPT's (cockpit procedural trainers) that are interactive to varying degrees, all PC based. My point is that RL pilots are almost certain to fly sims, albeit slightly more expensive ones! IMHO, any RL pilot who sneers at a modern PC sim is simply ignorant of what it can do. FSX still beats our (brand new) B738 sim for visuals, although I must say it's quite spiffy, what with moving cars etc on the roads around airports, enormous view angles, super smooth frame rates (ahem, maybe FSX loses out there :) ) Shameless plug: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Kulula-%28Comair-Limited%29/Boeing-737-86N/1845177/L/&sid=702171dd51b387f25be2470e46cb1904 One of the planes I'll fly - odd paint scheme, but hey. VTB_Ray Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 (edited) It's always interesting to see what everyone flys in r/l. I'm a flight instructor at ATP, flying the PA-44 Seminole, C-172's. I have about 650 hrs so far, most of which is in my dads '54 Super Cub. Next step is to fly for American Eagle, and then hopefully FedEx! I love DCS, incredible sim, I just wish I had more time to fly/learn it all! Scratchy Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I'm a retired commercial pilot with about 4k hours (I know, not much compared to some). I've flown all kinds of fixed wing single and multi engine; small and not so small aircraft. I'm always on the look-out for a sim that can satisfy my need for a fix. DCS A-10 has hit my sweet spot. :pilotfly: I love the flight model and aircraft fidelity. I'm very happy and equally impressed by this accomplishment. Throw in the ability to apply munitions to bad guys...wowzer. I've 'flow' the usual suspects: MFS IV through X, X-plane9, all the Jane's offerings. Pretty much anything that's come along over the years. They all fell short of what I wanted. Anyway...yes, this sim rocks. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Intel i7-8700K @4.9Ghz | 32Gb memory DDR4 | Evga GTX 1080ti | Saitek Eclipse keyboard | Logitech Mx518 | CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle/Pedales | TIr5 | Win10 x64 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
