Radar Rider Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Is NATO sending A-10C to Aviano to use them soon in Libya? Today I saw on TV some Warthog landing in Aviano.

Lucas_From_Hell Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 On the brightside, at least it's not politics, no...? Hm, whatever. Wouldn't be surprised if that Rafale air-to-sittingduck kill is used as an argument to sign a contract for the Brazilian Air Force.

Mongoose Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 In the news: The U.S. is expected to soon deploy a tank-killing plane, the A-10 Warthog, to add another way to strike at Gadhafi's ground forces http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/03/25/134861411/allies-may-arm-libyan-rebels-and-deploy-tank-killing-warthogs
Krebs20 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Something about an A10 doing a no fly zone enforcement doesn't sit right with me. Any recent links about what the mission is? Or has a consensus not been made yet. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
159th_Viper Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Something about an A10 doing a no fly zone enforcement doesn't sit right with me..... Has nothing to do with the no-fly zone. mvsgas Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 :D instead of playing with a camera, is he suppose to be navigating or something? To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
Sticky Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 (edited) Clips from one of the GR4 sorties out of Gioia. Are those Brimstone missiles? The ones on a triple rack, looking like Hellfires? Makes good sense if they are, smaller blast, thats good. Edited March 26, 2011 by Sticky [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My Sim/Game CV: Falcon 1,3,4. Gunship. A10 TankKiller. Fighter Bomber. Strike eagle 2&3. tflash Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Are those Brimstone missiles? The ones on a TER similar rack, looking like Hellfires? Makes good sense if they are, smaller blast, thats good. Yes, they are dual mode Brimstome missiles. This Tornado is quite heavily armed with Asraam for self-defense, two Paveway 4 bombs and 3 Brimstone. You can also see joysticks for the WSO at 0:48 and 5:11; I guess these are for the Litening pod, I'm not sure why there are two, one at each side? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Yeah saw the sticks, I assumed those were for if the pilot cant fly/land anymore, the WSO can take over the controls?? And that they put them up there cos thats where he will be to see anything when trying to land?? Never seen those before, just a guess. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My Sim/Game CV: Falcon 1,3,4. Gunship. hassata Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 The air defense network is close to crippled, the focus has shifted to plinking tanks and APC, so the A10 makes perfect sense. I just hope they don't bring along the gift that keeps on giving, being DU rounds. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I just hope they don't bring along the gift that keeps on giving, being DU rounds. They do, and DU rounds are no more a health hazard than lead rounds. (Radiation is not an issue - too long half-life - it's the heavy metal toxicity that is dangerous, just like lead.) There's a thread on the topic somewhere where it is discussed extensively. tflash Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Maybe the A-10 is not so ideal to cross the mediterranean for each mission? It is a little slow also. Rafale, Tornado, Typhoon and the likes are over Libya in 10 minutes. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Yeah, unless they were able to base it at least at Malta it seems like a bit of a weird choice. They do have aerial refueling of course, but the flight time would seem prohibitive. It would be different if Tunisia and/or Egypt joined the UN mission, but I'd be sort of surprised if they do considering they still have a lot of things on their hands.
