i get the feeling its a more local flying affair. like say flying over a single city and doing whatever is on offer in that city etc...

that said, what about bad weather operations ?

i predict arma2 style choppy lag

Thats all gonna be fixed with the 1.6 patch. It will have virtually no choppy movement.

If you don't trust my word for it try the Beta patch and go play a huge MP Battle with lots of players and AI. You will be pleasently surprised.

Go in close, and when you think you are too close, go in closer.

I`m a big ArmA fan, and I think I will support BIS and buy TOH. It looks fun.

But I have a question, dose TOH simulates navigation like VOR, radio, GPS ect - can you use navigation equipment like in xplane or fsx?

Yes I'm sure it will have those features as its a heli sim.

I wouldnt bet on it, its not a sim its a game and that has been the emphasis all along. The current clickable content is limited to startup and shutdown (atc on) . not to mention you only fly in one city (+asia map)

It will be nothing like fsx or xplane

Read this thread.

I'm downloading it now (14gb) and will post again after testing tomorrow.

I don't expect another Black Shark but it would be nice to see the engine from Arma2 with an accurate flight model and improved graphics.

A DCS user gave it a good write up on their forums,

I agree with that sentiment. Seattle is beautiful, haven't seen Asia yet. Working my way down the training regimen.

I like it, and I'm confident we'll have Attack helo's soon enough. Longbow I'm looking for a AH-1z. KA-50 maybe?

im thinking i must read that dcs users opinion to see what they say.... Doh.! He's me btw.

and yeah in a casual sort of way im really enjoying TOH. Its got its own unique style. and i do like the crazy RPG-esque approach to missions etc. one thing i cant understand is why everyone wants to turn it back into arma2 though.

Modding in a non lethal sense should be very interesting indeed !

now the FM. Its not great, but out of where it was born (arma2) they have done a seriously good job in making it act like a real helicopter with some sort of realistic FM. but its not. but it is really "OK". Its hard ! very hard and challenging. For comparsion i suggest its like piloting choppers in FSX. There is a demo to be had shortly so everyone can check it out.

A DCS user gave it a good write up on their forums, so I went for it. If I get it up and running today, I'll post first impressions.

So... after half a day with Take On Helicopters, here's some feedback.

Please note that I am not a real world helicopter pilot, I've flown in them but not as a pilot...

Take On Helicopters is good.

As it stands now six out of ten.

That's not bad but once it gets patched, I'm sure it will be better.

Flight Model

The flight model is very different to ARMA2, much more realistic and harder to control.

It doesn't feel as realistic as Black Shark but that might have more to do with the surroundings than the flight model.

Gameplay

Take On Helicopters feels like ARMA2 in civilian clothes.

What doesn't help are elements like the ARMA2 compass, gps and watch when you open the map. It doesn't fit and feels rushed.

The Career mode is fun but full of spelling mistakes and weird bugs.

It's very playable but not very professional.

I know that English isn't BIS's native language but that's not an excuse.

I had more fun in ARMA2's campaigns and found them more polished.

You will often encounter silly mistakes, for example, in the training mission, you start mid-flight with your brother at the controls.

He gives you control shortly afterwards but the collective isn't synced to the position of your joystick throttle, so as soon as you move it, bang crash wallop - game over.

When the AI flies, the helicopter flies a classic bobbing ARMA2 AI pattern instead of straight through the air... I could go on...

Performance

If you want to see trees and buildings off into the distance and still get a good, playable frame rate (30fps) at 1920x1200, you will need to be pushing 5ghz, I guess.

I can run about 10km view distance (max is 16km) which gives me a nearly constant 30fps and I have an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.5ghz and run 2560x1600.

There are plenty of sliders to adjust, so everyone will be able to play this game, you'll just be missing out on a lot of eye candy.

I tried using the settings I use in ARMA2 but this game needs a higher view distance, as you're flying, and that hits performance heavily.

It would be great if BIS could find a way to implement a believable fog beyond the selected view distance instead of just clipping objects at that distance.

Graphics

The new weather/ cloud system is great. Just don't turn your head because it will look like the clouds are melting...

Modelling of the helicopters is great.

The environment, water, sky and lighting are great and really make TOH look really nice.

There is car traffic and air traffic which adds to the feeling of a living and breathing city.

The antialiasing in-game is not good and distant buildings shimmer.

I haven't found a way to force higher AA but you can use this add-on to make it look sharper and better.

You can also use the in-game post processing to add motion blur or to make it look like someone smeared butter over your eyeballs but I don't.

Hopefully the ARMA2 No Blur Mod will soon be released for this game.

The cockpit textures remind me of Alphasim models in FSX, which is strange because I had expected them to be much better.

They're not as low res as ARMA2 but nearly. The main dials work and you can flip some switches but it feels very gamey and not very realistic.

What's nice is that you can go through start-up and shut down routines.

The ground textures are grainy and not very sharp or detailed. You can see what it's meant to be but it's not very clear.

Nothing to write home about but nice enough and if you don't stare at the textures, they definitely add to the feeling of flying over Seattle.

Oddly enough, the character textures and not the cockpit or ground textures are the best in this game.

Controls

I used a TM Warthog and Saitek Combat Pedals and had no problem setting them up.

I also use Track-IR and that worked ok. The only problem is the default position in the cockpits is very high and close to the doors, so if you turn your head, you will look often through the 3d model, which kills the immersion.

The Track-IR range of motion also seems to be limited by code and not by the Track-IR settings. I would welcome more freedom of movement in the cockpits.

Controls work great and are very sensitive, turn off deadzone and you'll be fine.

Conclusion

Based on my experiences with ARMA2, I am sure that once the modding community embraces TOH and BIS release a couple of patches to fix the problems and improve performance, this will be a great game.

I will probably wait a few weeks before I pick this up again, at the moment it looks good but is annoying to play.

If you're into helicopters and you like ARMA2, I would recommend this game.

It's fun and in a few months, it will be great.

My opinion is just that, your mileage might vary.

Overall 6/10

I've only had a few hours, but am really digging it.

The interface, set up, and options are as good if not better than I've seen in a sim. Setting up controllers and binding keys is a pleasure. Adjusting graphics settings for FPS optimization can be done on the fly, with immediate feedback (with Fraps) on the paused screen on which the menu is superimposed.

Flight model on expert feels good-takes work to hover and land well. I don't think the Vortex ring is modeled (Edit: this and other FM fine tuning coming in a patch).

I found a graphics vs. performance (very) sweet spot on my machine (e8400@4.0/hd6970). Check here for optimal set-up: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=126178. Sky, clouds, and weather are as good as I've seen in any sim. Saw a double rainbow near Seattle! Okay, it was only one rainbow, but still.

I can tell training and missions are going to be really immersive and fun. Tried the first time challenge (a low level run through the forrest) and had a blast. Collidable trees-yeah buddy! The modder community are going to have a field day with this one.

Basically, this is my immediate further: (i) flop down on the couch, fire up PS3 Battlefield 3 till I pass out; (ii) if have some energy, move to the PC for some jump-in-and-fly helio action; (iii) if have a little bit more energy, skip (ii) and go directly to DCS.

Overall, I'm glad I bought TOH.

I think BIS was a little bit afraid to go on a "full blown" realistic sim.

They didn't know what to expect since it's their first try.

If you look at the BI forum you'll see the devs are really paying attention to feedbacks, specially the bad ones. They want ot improve the game, they want to please their audience.

Someone was really disapointed by ToH, on several aspects.

And this is the answer of one of the devs concerning the flight model :

wanna explain what's missing / not right ?

what FDM abilities You expect to be there or improved

(don't fear to point at some FDM on internet saying THIS one is better/best)

It shows how much they care about your opinion.

So don't be afraid to share it !

Actually the FM has been improved since the public beta test and they have had actual pilots comment on how to improve it. So in your opinion whats wrong with the FM? Even Arma2 OAs FM is ok by me and that is quite different to FSXs FMs.

FSX and ARMA2 aren't exactly a gold standard.

Depends on the aircraft the R22s FM is actually very good and that feedback was from an actual R22 pilot. There are better payware addons with much better FMs such as the Iriquoi which I've heard is quite good. As for A2 its Fm has improved significantly since OFP and the ability of multicontroller input means you can use rudder pedals as well as a good Hotas which is very good. Theres more to FSX than most people realise as well my only issue was the EH101 FM had no trim or FBW but TKOH does have trim and other features. Over time it will reach DCS level as BI are like ED they like to evolve their sim and make it as realistic as possible.

Helicopters in FSX only start to scratch the surface of realistic if you use the 'Helicopter Total Realism' add-on.

Stock FSX helicopters fly like heavy RC models.

Dodosim produced the only semi-realistic flight model for FSX with their Bell 206.

DCS are the only company to have come near a real flight model with Black Shark, apart from commercial training simulators.
