I just wanted to introduce myself. I just downloaded the game from Steam and found this forum. I'm completely amazed by the game and the community here!

I've been a long time lover of flight sims and the most recent one I've owned is the Microsoft FSX. I've been out of the scene for some time now and decided to return. So last week I bought the Thrustmaster HOTAS X and "then" went shopping for a game to play. That's when I found DCS A-10 Warthog. I was at first intrigued by the complexity of the game and was a bit weary to jump in, but I found myself drawn to the challenge of really learning to fly the Warthog. In the sim world at least.

So here is the list of my gear:

Asus G73JH-RXXB05 laptop

Thrustmaster HOTAS X joystick (will this be adequate to play this sim or did I just waste money?)

Next on the list TrackIR 5!

Also, here are some issues I'm having:

First one is a really novice one. I have set the game to be in "full screne mode", but for some reason the mouse pointer has gone invisible. So I can't see where or what I'm doing with the mouse. Is there a simple solution to this? I know, I feel stupid for asking this...

Second, and this is a HUGE one. Where in the world do I begin??? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Oh, and you guys are awesome!

At first hello and welcome.

1. The cursor disapears after a few seconds in the cockpit but it should get visible when you move the mouse again.

2. Start with the training missions and read the corresponding manual chapters. It helps to get started. There you learn the startup, flying and the weapon systems etc. Reading the whole manual first and then jump in the cockpit is very confusing in my humble opinion.

Watch videos on Youtube. Nearly every aspect of the sim is covered by really great and professional done training videos, both from ED and the community. Sometimes the training missions are a bit confusing, thats the point when the videos can help out.

You can also go online and ask for help/advise. The community is very welcoming and helpful. Don't hesitate to ask if something isn't clear. "There are no stupid questions only stupid answers".

You are welcome to my DCS A-10 server "Ugly Bastards".

Welcome :)

As Abbath said, start with the training missions and corresponding manual sections and work through them for an overview. Once done, do it again.

Important note:

Update the revised training missions from here and install as per instructions prior to starting your training-

Greetings and welcome,

For the cursor...do you have "mouse trails" turned on? If so turn it off, I am not aware that it is an issue with this one but many, many games will submerge the cursor if it is on.

The stick is a good one for its price point but you will need to be a bit creative with button assignments. Personally, I think the stick moves really nice just a bit under-buttonned, as it were.

Small bites...take a quick look at the big picture but then pick an area and work on it, when you are getting comfortable add something new. There is a lot too know but once you get started you will see that it is not as formidable as it first appears.

Do, get TIR. No question. Best money I have ever spent on a product that plugs into a USB port.

Oh, one more thing. Do get out there and just fly the thing around.

You can definitely play A-10 with it, I would still suggest to upgrade to X-52 or T-Warthog when possible.

Here is a link with questions regarding the THX:

You can also use the profile I provided there. Just mind that it has no view-pan controls, because I use Track IR.

A warm welcome to you zoomzoomers6 - the community here is amazing and the sim is brilliant. You won't regret your purchasing decision.

I'm relatively new to the the A10C too, coming, like you, from FSX. The best tips I have are:

1. Read the manual BUT realise (which I didn't) that the first half (to page 412) is like a reference guide. The second half, (once you understand all acronyms!) is more of a how-to guide and is much more user friendly.

2. The CDU and MFCD sections in the manual are particularly long, detailed and frightening - someone with more knowledge than me might be able to point out what you can safely ignore (for now) and what to read sooner rather than later.

3. FSX might not have taught you about the litany of acronyms in this sim (e.g. TGP, TAD, MFCD, SOI, SPI, CMS, TMS, DMS) and other confusing terms (Pinky Switch and China Hat I'm thinking of you!). Learn what these are as soon as possible. If they were called things like map (TAD), camera (TGP) and monitor (MFCD) the learning curve would be less daunting!

4. There's lots of great videos on YouTube. Checkout the channels of ExcessiveHeadspace, wagmatt and tigerpwrr for starters.

5. If you don't understand something, search in this forum first and then don't be afraid to ask for help if your search was fruitless. I've never seen anyone abused on these forums.

Good luck!

Wow! I'm floored. The youtube videos, the warm welcome from all of you and all the helpful hints and insight. At first, I almost gave up on this game due to its complexity (yes, I've only played those arcade sims up to now), but you guys have given me the motivation to learn this. A heartfelt thanks from me! I'll just take little baby steps. Thanks again!

Hi mate, learn what you can via training missions and vids and when you can take off and land, jump onto a multiplayer server...trust me, you will be overwhelmed with the camaraderie and help offered, and then for the ultimate buzz...join a squadron!...:pilotfly::thumbup::smilewink:

Thanks for the advice. I don't know if I'll ever be up to speed enough to join a squadron, but that's my ultimate goal.

Guys, need some help.

I posted in the TM HOTAS X thread, but here it goes here too. (sorry for the multipost)

I loaded up asparagin's .txt to .lua file for the HOTAS X key assignments. In doing that I accidentally cleared the assignments for the "keyboard" keys. So currently, I have no assignments for all the keyboard keys. How can I get the default assignments back for "keyboard"? Thanks in advance!

Navigate to the Options/Controls/A-10C SIM page of the SP GUI and highlight the top entry in the keyboard column. You will see the 'box' bordered in white when highlighted.

Once done, click the 'Load Profile' tab on the top right. You'll see a box pop up with folder options. Navigate via Config/Input/A10-C/Keyboard folder and open. Choose the Keyboard.LUA file and hit 'OK'.

Default key assignments should now be loaded.

Hey Zoom and welcome to the community.

We all help out here, so just ask away at any questions, or try the search function first but sometimes therer are multiple threads all asking the same stuff and can be daunting.

Best way to start like the guys said is the training misisons and flight manual and then multiplayer.

If you want some coaching, I have a basic training mission that I fly with my team mates on and you're welcome to join us (UK time though), just hit me up on private message.

Good luck, and don't give up, it's worth it, trust me!!!

For some odd reason, I can't seem to highlight the "top entry" of the keyboard column. Or any other column for that matter. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks again.

Just press any entry inside the column "keyboard". Then you should have the loading and saving options available.

To your other question:

Depending on what mode you play, you have to configure the corresponding controls. (sim /game).
