-Ice Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I was wondering if anyone's gotten around to making a "busy" airport? By "busy," I mean having vehicles move about, having infantry running to and fro, some aircraft landing and taking off... I'm tired of feeling like the only guy alive in the theatre. :helpsmilie: - Ice
Eddie Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Yep, all the time. Not that hard to do, it just takes a bit of time to put together. But remember in the real world you might only have 10 aircraft taking off/landing in a 24 hour period, of course on other occasions/in different theatres you may have active aircraft 24 hours a day. But then, you'd be suprised how quiet an active military airbase can be at times, even when operational. You won't see many vehicles on the airfield, because well it's an airfield and vehicle movements are restricted, especially on the taxiways and runway(s). And apart from the odd maintenence team on the ramp/around the hangars/HAS sites, you won't see many people on the airfield either, certainly not any infantry (They'd only break/steal something :D).
happyslayeruk Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 "certainly not any infantry (They'd only break/steal something )" This is true. I remember many years ago when waiting on a Herc we saw that the herc next to us was empty but being loaded with the infamous RAF 'white box' packed lunches. When the loadmaster went away a couple of us left our plane sneaked aboard the other and stole them. We were well fed when we arrived at our destination :) 1 Asus P8Z68 V-Pro/Gen3, Intel i5 2500K @4.5, 8GB DDR3 1600, EVGA GTX 670 FTW Signature 2, Creative SB X-Fi Titanium Pro, Saitek X52 Pro, TrackIR 5.
-Ice Posted August 8, 2011 Author Posted August 8, 2011 So, what do you put in, Eddie? I'm not looking for a 24-hour busy airport, heck, I'm just looking to "trigger" the airport when the player aircraft is in the area. No sense in having activity that won't be seen. Aircraft-wise, I'd love to start the mission and listen/see aircraft taking off and landing. Then as I start to taxi, I'd love to go past some other fighter aircraft, maybe a couple of F-15s who will go up after I've taken off and will actually be a CAP to support my CAS flight. When RTB, it'd be fun to "slot in" behind some aircraft in landing. Infantry-wise, I'd like to see some soldiers do ground-crew stuff like wave me to my parking lot or direct me out of parking... Heck, a random "runs across the tarmac, gets into a Humvee, and drives off" would be a nice change. Or fuel trucks going to and fro... Stuff like that... I hate having all the sky to myself and would love some company. Though I bet getting ATC clearance to takeoff/land would be a pain :D - Ice

Yes, this all depends on if it's fighters, bombers or a tanker base. I know a lot about fighter bases, been on them for 12 years.......and they are very busy with people and vehicles. When I was deployed (vacation) to Guam in 2003, we took 6 F-16's. They had B-52's and B-1's there already. Then shortly after we got there about 6-8 F-15's landed. I can tell you it was busy with vehicles and people all other the place. I haven't been to the sandbox yet, so I don't know how that war zone is. But from people that have been there and pictures I have seen, it looked the same. At my last base they flew up to 100 sorties a day, that was an F-16 training base. At my new base, a B-52 base, they fly 1-4 sorties a day. Maybe a few other vets can chime in on what they have seen. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
latearrival Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Here's a mission posted by JEFX back in April that starts at a busy/atmospheric airbase: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1172581&postcount=15 1 Windows 10 | i5 2500k @ 4.4Ghz | MSI GTX 970 4GB | 8GB RAM | ASRock P67 Extreme4 | Seasonic X-Series 650W PSU | Oculus Rift DK2 | CH Fighterstick, Throttle & Pedals
Elwin Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I believe such "busy behaviour" could be added in mission editor. One could add some "idle" groups that would go about their business not interfering with the actual mission in any way, basically cycling through their waypoints around the airport, some aircrafts that would take off, fly their patrol flight plan, land, park and wait some predefined time or for a trigger before next round. You would only need couple of such units and some triggers to make the impression. Or play multiplayer with more players, I've seen the airports being quite busy that way ;-) But of course, it would be working best if this would be implemented as part of the game and then only modified through settings (like civil traffic is right now).
112th_Rossi Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 It would be cool if you could drop a module onto the map to generate this kind of thing. Much like ARMA does with its AI modules.

CEPEGA Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 ... and btw, i'm asking me all the time, why there are no signs on taxiways that show you the direction arrows to the parking areas and runways. Sometimes it's realy hard to find the right runway if you start on an unknown airfield. Murf7413 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Well, everywhere I have deployed over the years, has always been a beehive of activity on the ramp and base. My last deployment was the 1st Gulf war with the F-4 Wild Weasel's from George AFB, Ca.... and Shaikh Isa AB in Bahrain was a very busy place. intel i7 960, Liquid cooled case, Vista 64bit, 8MB RAM, nVidia GTS250 XLR8 Extreme Performance 1MB, TM COUGAR HOTAS
Agg Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 This is probably my biggest problem with the DCS-series, it doesnt feel like you're flying around in a living world. The civilian car traffic does help a bit, but Id love to have some civilian aircraft flying around (especially when the Nevada scenery comes out) as well. And ground crews would certainly help a lot. Everything that helps liven up the DCS world a bit is welcome in my book ;)
Bucic Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Fire up Flanker 2.x for a while and then go back to DCS. It will seem to you as a world full of life then. Boberro Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I feel same, DCS is still much too sterile. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
VFA41_Lion Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I've tried to fill up certain airbases with as much inactive aircraft as I could... it starts to lag after a certain point.. like 20 a/c. :P
Frostiken Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Well, airbase operations at home station are totally unlike what you see in a combat zone. Suffices to say, at an F-15 base (2x F-15E Sqs, 1x F-15C), typically there's 6 flying blocks - two gos for each squadron. Typically you're looking at a 12-turn-10. Bagram however, don't know what you guys are talking about with combat airbases being quiet - sure we we do a lot less flying, typically two-ship operations every four hours or so... about once or twice a day we'll get a scramble call and throw up two more in less than five minutes... but in there's a hell of a lot more traffic overall. Running ATC at that base must be a nightmare. There's usually F-16s at Bagram as well and they like to pretend to play war by putting up some aircraft at about the same schedule, but they never get scramble calls (no JTAC alive would take a lawndart for anything over an F-15). All during the day something is taking off or landing. Chinooks are going in and out, Apaches and Blackhawks are puttering around, sometimes you'll see AC-130s and there's *endless* amounts of cargo traffic - a few AN-225s come in and out a few times a week, several C-17s and the odd C-5. Ground traffic there's not much where we were at, but if you go on the other side of base, the *one road* that services all of Bagram's dorms, B-huts, the BX area, DFACs, etc. etc. etc. is an endless sea of people and one massive traffic jam. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Speed Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Heh, I remember a busy airport mission. So we get into our jets, and my wingman/flight lead/whatever says after a little bit; "Uh, I hear a helicopter, but I don't see it". So I look around and find this OH-58 hovering over an A-10. I start to say something, then change my mind. As I watch, the OH-58 slowly descends in a hover and lands directly on top of the other guy. A massive fireball ensues :D Ah, the not-so-good ole days of beta. Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. Stickers Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 . When I was deployed (vacation) to Guam in 2003 lol, thanks for the (vacation) insert. When I was doing FCC stuff I got to spend 48 hours in Guam. There is something weird about being paid to chill on a tropical beach and watch B2's fly overhead.
