swift Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 (edited) It would add immersion because women use to tell detailed instructions to do things in RL. It would be nice to hear a female voice saying "cleared hot" more often. What about female pilot voice? :) Edited September 9, 2011 by swift

swift Posted September 9, 2011 Author Posted September 9, 2011 ^^^ on second thought, maybe you're right :D Early human factors research in aircraft and other domains indicated that female voices were more authoritative to male pilots and crew members and were more likely to get their attention. A lot of this research was based on pilot experiences, particularly in combat situations, where the pilots were being guided by female air traffic controllers. They reported being able to most easily pick out the female voice from amid the flurry of radio chatter. More recent research, however, carried out since more females have begun working in aviation as pilots and air traffic controllers, indicates that the previous hypothesis may be unreliable. General human factors wisdom now indicates largely that, either due to current culture or changing attitudes, an automated female voice is no more or less effective than the male voice. Edworthy et al. (2003) at the University of Plymouth, UK, for example, found that both acoustic and non-acoustic differences between male and female speakers were negligible. Therefore, they recommended, the choice of speaker should depend on the overlap of noise and speech spectra. Female voices did, however, appear to have an advantage in that they could portray a greater range of urgencies because of their usually higher pitch and pitch range. They reported an experiment showing that knowledge about the sex of a speaker has no effect on judgments of perceived urgency, with acoustic variables accounting for such differences [1]. But Arrabito (2009) has found that with simulated cockpit background radio traffic, a male voice rather than a female voice, in a monotone or urgent annunciaton style, resulted in the largest proportion of correct and fastest identification response times to verbal warnings, regardless of the gender of the listener.[2] Bitching Betty - wikipedia
Spetz Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 JTACs are embedded with ground combat units. Women are barred from assignment to those units by law. We have several women in combat roles within the Canadian military. The majority are more than capable og holding their own in firefights..First hand experience.

Women who enlisted in a combat arms specialty, as opposed to women in support specialties who have come under fire while deployed? I know this is a late reply..Yes... Females are allowed in Combat Specialties if they pass all the testing same as males. We have females SPEC OPS soldiers as well.
Heli Shed Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) In the British Army Females are not allowed to be part of 'Teeth Arms' that is to say a Combat Unit. By virtue of the fact that a JTAC (FAC in old money) is a Cat 3 soldier, it is unlikely that you will come accross a female JTAC. Having completed a total of '4' tours, lets just say, 'in the sand', I have never come accross a female JTAC. I am also JTAC qualified. Ironically, I have requested and gotten ECAS form 2 Apache's and one of the pilots was our infamous 'Angel of Death'. Now she......................................................rocks! 'T' edit: To add, I'm not saying that some of our fine Women colleagues are not, nor have been , or are likely to 'not' get caught up in contact. They are, have and will do. Most of them Medic's & Logisitcs (we have sadley had some horrific injuries and deaths ie AGC and Psyops - I have soldiers of my own at Headley Court right now). Irrelevant of cap badge they are an inspiration to all and I have personally fought along side a female medic whilst our PB was attacked. Moral of the story? Irrelevant of whether 'red tape' says that women can join the Combat element of the British Armed Forces (Infantry, HCav, Cav and SF, etc) or not, they have proven themselves above and beyond that which is required by their own specific combat speciality (CS or CSS lines), by their service and support at 'every' level, currently on operations. After 24 years service in the Infantry, a WO1 (RSM) that has been selected for Comission to Captain, I say that if they can do and pass the training to the same standards as men, are physically fit and mentally robust enough, let them have a shot. The old addage of a soldier not wanting to fight alongside a woman and would feel more protective and compromise himself and that of his team, is sheer drivel! Frogisis Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) It gets my vote. Gender-blind comms would make me feel more like I'm fighting for the good guys. Er, on the side of good. V Haha, touche. But I think most people think of that as "neutral," and "blind" as "doesn't matter which one."
