When you make a skin you can either

 

A) save it over an excisting slot ie overwriting a previous skin.

or

B) save it in a new slot.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

or if you can't afford 600 quid something else..

Like photopaint or GIMP.

I too would like ED to release the Template for the P-51.

My biggest concern is to have other online multiplayers see your custom skin. Is that possible? If not, it should.

One of the reasons it's unfeasable to have custom skins displayed in multiplayer is simply because of the size of ED's skin files. Usually they are anywhere from 80-130mb. The typical IL-2 skin file is like 2mb maybe. Probably less actually since they were 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 bitmaps I think.

 

Maybe if they could implement some form of p2p file transferring between clients with the multiplayer server acting as a seed host, it might be possible.

 

Also to use it you have to create a new entry in the skin database for each plane for each skin which is more in depth than just dropping it into a folder ala IL-2.

Wow. 80-130MB?! I've never done any skinning, that much is obvious. It seems like making custom skins shared in multiplayer might be more hassle than it is worth.

 

At the same time, why do skins have to be so big? Maybe multiplayer skins could be a special format, with lower res, so that they only mass like 2 MB. Unless you're using external views, except perhaps when you taxi really close to someone, you wouldn't ever be able to tell the difference.

 

Anyway, I see why we don't have shared MP skins- the challenges of any approach seem pretty significant, enough that I'm not surprised ED chose not to pursue MP shared skins. Thanks for the explanation.

Why DO they have to be so big? Rise of Flight skins are 5.3 MB. I set up a mission where my single ship forms with a flight of 4 p-51's. It was a slideshow when 4 planes were in view even though 3 and 4 were quite distant in a loose finger four. This is just unnecessary IMO.

"Bazar\Liveries\P-51D" folder. Use Photoshop with the Nvidia DDS plugins.
