Gremlin77 Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Took me one year to find the fitting fuselage. Had two possibilities for an ISKRA trainer from Poland, but they only have one row of consoles on each side, so nothing for a real A-10 feeling. But don't you have better possibilities in the USA at the plane cementaries? Getting an old A-10 fuselage? visit my build thread Gremlin's A-10  http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86916

Gremlin77 Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 finally arrived and first steps So, the time has come. The Tornado cockpit finally arrived!!!! The first steps I made is to uninstall the left and right front console. After a little CAD work and laser cutting, the right front console backplate is finished. Here is the original Tornado console: and here is the modified for my A-10 You can see, Lilliput 8'' is fitted for right MFD. 'Cause of having only little space in center front console, I decided to move CMSC to the top of right console. To be continued....:D visit my build thread Gremlin's A-10  http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86916

Gremlin77 Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 So, just added the EMI panel. Pointers still missing. All Instruments will work with stepper motors of General Motors spare parts for Tachometer. The advantage of these is, that the have a mechanical zero position. So, to initalise, you just drive the stepper minimum a hole rotation leftside. So you get sure, you software and pointer have the same 0-position. Each instrument is drived by an H-bridge chip connected to an arduino to get DCS values over my I2C bus system. Each Instrument is lighted with a green diode from up right corner. Gremlin77 Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 I place the whole thing in a big unused room with about 15 x 8 meters. Installed already two beamers, so having a front display of about 8 x 2.8 meters (getting a bit sick flying to many curves, but think I'll get used to it) without overlapping. In the future going to install a single curved screen with overlapping and warpalizer software. When the car crane (don't know the right english word) has lifted the cockpit in, I'll send fotos. visit my build thread Gremlin's A-10  http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86916

Gremlin77 Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) UFC Panel fitted on original Tornado HUD. Normally there are the controls for the HUD. Duckling Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Very interesting build Gremlin and a grand start. Nothing compared to the extra dimension of having a real cockpit to build on. Wish they wasn't so heavy though, LOL, the effort and planning needed to move'em around is huge. We got three sim live and two more under build at the local airmuseum but I really envy you having your own Cheers Gus - - - -
Gremlin77 Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 Machinery instruments now completed with pointers and fully lighted. In the upper right corner you see that green LEDs are not always the same color when you use different manufactures.......damn :smilewink: now on this panel only the rings on front are missing, then completet. Gadroc Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Excellent progress! I can't wait to see some of this installed and running.
agrasyuk Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 this is indeed very cool, even with the off-color LED (still can be changed to correct one i would think) instrumentation is my favorite part of the aircraft :) can't wait to see animated Anton. Gremlin77 Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 Set up a prototype circuit to drive the stepper motors via the i2c bus. Using one atmel mega8 to drive 3 steppers. (More is not possible cause of available numer of atmel pins and latency getting to high). Works fine. Just have to add three more cards and the panel is ready for build-in visit my build thread Gremlin's A-10  http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86916

Dropship Pilot Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Hi Gremlin, that cockpit of your's is really amazing! I wish I could show nearly as much progress on mine (which has by far a smaller scope). When I had a look at your UFC I noticed one thing: The 4th. button is labeled BACK. However, it should be HACK (for HACK-Time). Looking forward to see more of your build. Cheers, Stefan
Gremlin77 Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 oh, thanks for the tip! I'll change it. Think, it was too late at night and with too much coffee in my brain when I did that panel..... visit my build thread Gremlin's A-10  http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86916
Gremlin77 Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 A short video of moving pointers. Just set up three instruments by now, but they work quite smooth. Implemented the i2c interface, so that always a group of three instruments can be accessed. Makes 4 i2c devices for the 12 instruments running on this panel. These steppers have a mechanical reference point, so at first all pointers move to "0" position". This makes sure, all instruments have their zero position reached at startup. 1 visit my build thread Gremlin's A-10  http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86916
