I'm confused. This is a North Korean production or a South Korean production? I couldn't quite tell which side I was supposed to be rooting for. : D

 

Actually, however, except for the dodgy physics, I'd say that was a better watch than Top Gun (which isn't saying a great deal, mind you).

Very cheap propaganda movie. That's why, I will not going to see it.

 

Unfortunately, I personally experienced unpleasant situations where people quoted movies to make their point about how bad and cruel is the other side.

I first thought it was the latest Glowing Amraam movie introducing the F-15E to DCS!

 

But it's a South-Korean movie featuring F-15K, a romance with a female pilot and some mean-looking North-Korean bad-guy ace in a supernatural Mig-29! (No, we were not supposed to sympathise with a guy endangering civilians on the ground!)

 

I liked the tailslide into the building: didn't see a Mig do that yet in an airshow!

Dogfights on the Discovery Channel easily beats both of them.

Some of the stories certainly make the inverted bird on Top Gun seem plausible. Like pushing an injured wingman over the border by nudging the nose of your aircraft into his jet pipe.

At least Top Gun used real planes for the flying shots. IIRC the only movie up to that point, and since then to have actual footage of planes maneuvering close in close proximity that isn't a documentary.

 

But yeah, if radio calls are usually terrible and unrealistic in English movies, I don't stand to see a reason why that would change if the movie is South Korean. Not to say that I would want it to change, actual air combat in movies would be boring for most people to be sure.

Total run time for one scene, 35 minutes. Total cost to film that one scene, $350M. Box office earnings for the first 24 hours, $50M (probably because of the one scene that cost so much).

 

It sounds fun until you consider the time people would have to spend watching all of this "inaction". A lot of it is just planes flying around and "not doing anything". This is because most people don't understand the complexities behind it all and expect air combat to be all shooty shooty.

The big problem with Dogfights is that they make so much effort to dumb it down to the level where a layman can understand it. Nice for the total amateur, they'll learn _something_, but it's on the level of reading a popular science mag compared to actual journals; it just goes wrong when you move beyond the absolutely most simple concepts.

 

I do wish someone would make something like Dogfights but aim it at "pros", so to speak.

Top gun is awesome there. Fly close trail for 3 minutes and then be like "I'm almost there". :D

 

The sad thing with learning how to fly and fight jets - the movies you loved as a kid suddenly get destroyed. :P

Great clip and very realistic! It also shows a true multi-role capability of MiG-29 -> it can break glass buildings as well. With it's engine nozzles. And it can use Air to Air radar/missiles to lock and destroy ground targets, cars and stuff.

Also, with decent physics for their animations--the Dogfights animators don't seem to know anything about how real airplanes fly and maneuver.

Well, I think it's more like that they have to simplify everything to make things "obvious" to the amateur. Or well, it might be that. I give them roughly equal probability.
