I think ED and Bescl are trying to develop an SDK.

Free or licensed I do not know, but once you guys wrap your brilliant minds around that it could turn certain daunting tasks into a breeze.

Want to begin somewhere?

Why not with this? No radar, prop aircraft, armed,...

EDIT: Errr, sorry, the cockpit is not THAT simple... Quite complex instead. Sorry.

Prop dynamics and that.....?

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

...or "just" doing a 6DOF cockpit for a existing FC3 aircraft...

Excellent idea!! What about the AH-1W we already have in DCS:World? This way you can save a lot of time, as you don't need to create a new 3d model so you can use the time to create proper cockpits. I'm sure a lot of people will love to fly this baby...

Sorry Stratos, I don't want to smaller your enthusiasm,

but you simplifying things a little to much for my taste

(please don't mix it up wit the term "naive" - that's not what I'm saying!):

What about the AH-1W we already have in DCS:World?
... does the AH-1W we have in the sim working avionics and the underlying systems you can put your cockpit on ?

(let's not start to talk about the flight physics at this stage...)

3D cockpit!

Off course I mean 3d when I write "cockpit" - by adding 6 Degrees Of Freedom I just want to underline that it should consist only of 3d elements and not like the pits we have right now in FC2 - that are a mix of 2d and 3d , and is only looking good at certain angles .

Can't get your response, I'm not saying the Cobra needs only a cockpit, BUT that the external 3d model is ready, so they can save that time and work on cockpit and helo systems.

Getting an external model converted and in game is prolly the easiest thing in the development.

Cockpit Scripting, Systems Scripting, AFM and exporting all that to the DLL being the hardest.

The AH-1 also needs scripting for an AI Gunner and damage/death/injuries he would sustain by taking rounds or the ability to switch from Pilot to Gunner (which alot of people "would want" just because BF3 lets you do it.) or just because flying it around isnt enough. (even though Pilot "Could" control rockets and missiles.) outside of a few systems, I don't know how integrated the Pilot/Gunner seats are with each other on the Cobra, I know if you lose your gunner in the AH-64 you're limited to what you can do, it would be more beneficial to fly it home than try and stay in a battle by yourself.

As For using the Stock DCSW Model and building a Cockpit for it, there is one Variable that is out of the groups control, and that is Permission from ED to use their model. which they can allow or disallow at their own will.

Even the AH-64 is Incomplete even from an AI Standpoint. Not all of the systems are modeled.

...or "just" doing a 6DOF cockpit for a existing FC3 aircraft...

Which would require both ED AND Ubisoft's permission to use their assets, that's not one, but TWO large IFs.

You don't need anyone's permission to make a 3D cockpit for an existing flyable entity - you "just" need the skills and a couple of years of work....depending on your level of ambition(accuracy/fidelity) of course :) .

you would need EDs/Ubisofts permission to Sell A Module that uses their External Model 3d Assets.

Depending on whether you're aiming to be a "free" mod studio or a "Payware" Licensed Mod Group....

But To release a simple FREE Replacement 6DOF/3d Functional Pit for FC3 Aircraft... you could prolly do without permission.

Why would you need that?

The "asset" in question(external 3D model) has nothing to do with the cockpit and is a generic part of the game.

You would need EDs permission to sell a module full stop - whether you would get that for a cockpit mod alone is another matter.

Edit: didn't see the last part of your response before replying. Yes I agree - except for the last bit.......the word "simple" doesn't fit in the same sentence as "6DOF/3D functional pit" :) .

Ok folks this is where I need to step in and give direction on what needs to be done next.

Instead of trying to prove how hard this journey is going to be, the best thing is to get the team together and discuss this.

What I can do is host a Team Speak server and allow everyone to connect to it for a Town Hall meeting. I will post the agenda and times here.

We have several web tools to choose from but we need to figure out our teams process first before we settle for a tool.

So let me get a TS server and stay tuned for further information.

PS. I have had many folks offer their time and effort to such a project and I believe that this is going to be a launch pad for future Simulation Developers. So no one is excluded. Work hard and finish your assigned tasks and learn from the more experienced folks.

if anything I could be a beta tester, got plenty of experience with that, lol. (was that on the "list" of positions).

in regards to 3d models, aside from building and purchasing them, there are also members here on this forum that have built models or obtained them and would willingly give the source MAX Files to a qualified group to get the airframe into DCSWorld.

I'd also like to volunteer as a beta tester. I test software all the time at work and have a nack for finding bugs.

I also have over 20 years of sim experience with primarily X-plane being flown pre-DSC.

Don't even have a project yet but they already have beta testers... Hehe.

don't mind this guy, he likes sticking his nose in every freaking thread saying at most almost nothing, he's a troll, screw this nothing

Touchy, touchy. You'll get over it.

The fun thing is to come up with a Dev team name.

  • Birds of Prey (BOP)
  • Tactical Air Command (url = TACAttack)
  • Light Tactical Vehicles (LTV)
  • Ghost Squadron (GS)

Feel free to provide ideas. But once the team is assembled it will be our final decision of course.

Thinking about a team name, some buzzwords come to mind with pro and cons:

+ Open (to describe the open/free availabily of contents produces by the team in contrast to closed source)

+ Community (yes we are a Team)

? DCS (maybe there are some legal issues in using this brand)

- Mod (does the project only mod things, no its about creating new stuff)

- Project (it should be clear that this is a project so this word should be obsolet)

I believe this is correct, just not through ED's content delivery system(s). If it's entirely your work, then you can sell it on your own if you want to. If it uses any resources provided by ED... no dice. I see no other legal hold-up.

This would be very cool.

Not sure how accurate any 3 view drawing would be.
