Finally reached a milestone

Ok so compared to most of you, not much of one, but after many many times of going through the training procedure, and printing out a checklist - I can now successfully get the A-10C started up from cold and dark, and successfully into the air - and even return to land it.

Much I can now do from memory, but do refer back to the checklist as needed.

 

Just tooting my horn I guess - felt good to accomplish this. I have such a long way to go, to get to where I can finally fly a mission and actually destroy something, but I feel at least progress being made lol.

Congratulations my friend, I know what it feels like, I've had my new system a couple of weeks now and the only thing I have loaded is DCS a10, like you, I can now start, take off and land without any difficulty (think creaming the landings comes from my FSX days lol), now time to learn some hardcore weaponry skills

Yes I understand, I have been doing the same thing myself whilst lying there - battery on, inverter on standby, signal lamp test, etc etc.

Thank you - and, I also have Black Shark 2 installed and just waiting to be conquered lol , don't know when I will get around to that. However, I have a bit of a head start with it, the first ED sim I got was the original Black Shark on it's release - even have the printed manual - I made it as far as parabellum's tutorial on how to take off and blow stuff up. Been a while though, I will get a grip on A-10C first before going back to BS.

I'm right there with you D. I have had A10C for a week and a half now and after going thur my first 9 lives, I finally bought a small notebook with tabs to make notes on the different functions and that has helped me considerably. I used to fly A10s in Janes USAF back 2 or 3 computers ago, but the 2 don't compare. The USAF was great back in the day, but the realism in A10C is outstanding. I watch A10s up close and personal several times a week actually bombing and strafing at an air to ground range on the base where I work. I know what an impressive machine the A10 is and have been facinated with them since the late 70s when I saw my first one in the air. This is the closest I'll ever get to being a Hog driver.

Yeah I did it a couple more times this evening, getting faster at it and it is becoming more automatic for me, which is a good thing. Whew.

That's awesome, congratulations! It really isn't that difficult once you actually understand why you're doing all the steps and how they relate to each other instead of just going through it by rote.

 

It got to the point where there'd be a minute I'd just be twiddling my thumbs (or hitting the time acceleration) while I waited for the EGI to align, but now I've discovered all sorts of neat little things I can do to customize my jet just the way I like it. Slew speeds, weapon ripple quantities, HOF for sensor fused munitions, radio presets, relative volumes including Betty, radar altimeter tape on the HUD, etc...

Congratulations. It was only a little while ago that I reached that milestone myself. It feels fantastic just being able to take off and land. Time to move on to weapons training. Do make sure, however, to continue practicing your take offs and landings and include scenarios at night, with low visibility (fog) and/or crosswind components.

If you don't want to wait for EGI to align, you can immediately ask for ground power and then start by enabling the CDU and EGI switches. Then just proceed as normal, but don't forget to ask to disconnect ground power before taxiing.

This means the EGI starts aligning from the start and by the time you must flip the EAC switch it will be blinking. Most of the tweaks Frogisis is talking about can be done on route to your station.

 

P.S. I know this is not the operational standard procedure, but it works in the sim...:)

the next thing that got me really happy is getting back to base and rearming to get out again. feels as great :) and then doing that in multiplayer (got into one of those open night events).

To practice my ramp starting, I have been creating a fast mission. The last time went through the procedure and got in the air, I decided to go ahead and fly the steerpoints and see if I could complete them and get back to base.

Of course, I was just mincemeat for the enemy, not knowing a thing yet about weapon deployment or avoidance, and was fairly quickly blown out of the sky lol.

Just practice with the TGP and Maverick from about 14k until you learn it inside and out, then go to the next weapon.

As to the start-up, after a while you will think it's easier to do the a-10 cold start. There are no keyboard commands, just buttons and switches to push. You also have the trouble boad to refer to for most items.

Now that you're moving into weapons and have the warthog stick you might find that slewing the tgp and maverick seems to be very slow. I had that problem for over a month before I noticed that the slew control was tuned way down by default.

You adjust it in the axis settings. I ramped it up to about 50% of maximum and it turned my game completely around for the better. Where I could only attack a single target and maybe 2 in a single pass, I can now get up to 5 or 6. Searching is much easier as well.
