I appreciate the comment there Air Wolf, but do you or anyone know if it will be part of the 1.2.3 bug fix? I did review the Bug Fix sticky, but there was no specific mentions of any fix to this that I could interpret, unless I am mis interpreting this comment:

Bug Fixes and Adjustments:

DCS World

• Tuned aircraft gun smoke.

Does this represent the problem with the P-51D? Thanks for any clarification.

The guns hit my FPS for 50%.

The preliminary changelog for 1.2.3 states

"Bug Fixes and Adjustments:

DCS World

• Tuned aircraft gun smoke."

I hope this means the FPS hit is minimized.

I have some bad news and some good news

The bad news is it doesn't look like this FPS loss when firing 12.7mm MG in P-51D is fixed yet even in latest test version

The good news is I think I have found the reason why and I've reported it to developers just now, so fingers crossed its sorted out soon

Could you share the reason with us cause there might be a quickfix?

Figured this question would pop-up... check the screenshot and tell me what you see? Shells... lot of them... for every round you or anyone else fires there is a shell object for it that lasts about a minute I think (I haven't actually measured but it's around there approximately)

In this shot my FPS was 21... as shells disappeared one by one my FPS was going up and when all shells were gone my FPS was at 35.

So I hope I'm onto it and developers acknowledge and fix this... not sure if you can have quick fix till issue is properly sorted out... if this is not confirmed to be the real cause then it'll end up as just false hope... and at least I'll be able to say I tried

maybe there is a setup for the lifetime of a shell so you could adjust that. When the disappearance of the shells would be as fast as your fire rate, then you should have no fps drop, cause there are no shells :megalol:.

I am not that involved into programming and those hard core adjustements, but maybe this can help.

Well there needs to be shells visible dropping out of the wing as this is a feature of the DCS P-51D so you can't make them disappear too quick. I don't know if each shell has collision model also, if it does that would be real killer as each one would need CPU cycled for the duration of its life (as long as its visible). As I don't know this need to wait what devs say and do about it.

What if the shells have LOD range of 100000m as many objects had in game... you won't see them that far but they will be there.

Here's what I tried at first (I was doing this while checking if this was part of the announced fixes for 1.2.3) and I just started firing guns while sitting in cockpit and then I noticed long time after I was out of ammo, and what I thought was enough time for all shells to already reach the ground... my FPS was still lower then before I started firing... only some minute later I started seeing FPS slowly go up again... so this might just be it... again if it's not it was worth a shot.

If the Shells are not in the camera FOV they won't have an impact on FPS. A simple experiment would be to remove the Shell model and retest. I've no idea what that model is called however.

Whenever the P51 fires (especially when there's more than one) my FPS drops a lot, really similar to the way the mobile rocket artillery drops my fps as well.

Would these shells be 308 cal?

EDIT: Disregard... 3D model for these shells is:

.../Bazar/World/Shapes/shell_50cal.EDM

Rename this file to something else and test... there is still lower FPS when firing (has to be due to CPU calculations for rounds trajectory) but as you stop firing the FPS goes up to normal. So if anyone wants to try it (rename this file) and see if they get better FPS that would be good.

I've only noticed FPS drop whilst firing, back to normal when trigger released (average 40 fps with my settings)

Maybe it's not the model of the shell but the calculation for all those little shells tumbling around since it happens when they are not in view.

Edit: might help to also have a CPU meter and GPU like afterburner running and observe what happens when firing.

I've noticed in the 1v1 instant action, when I'm taking rounds from the AI (which is a lot :) I get huge FPS drop. So maybe it's an issue when ANY bullets are in the air, not just mine.

A-10C doesn't drop shell casings like P-51D, other aircraft in FC3 don't have this modeled either (can't remember if Ka-50 has it but even if it does fire rate is much less and also uses different ammo so most likely 3D model of it is different, possibly not even detailed as this one)

I think it has to do with the trail as well because it happens when opponent rounds shoot past me, for example if hes right on my tail and numerous rounds fly by and are not even hitting my plane.

To me this is not acceptable in a software package claiming to be a Digital Combat Simulation. The slow down takes away from the realism and ruins the experience. Fix the crap or remame to DS.. Digital Simulation.

With the exception of square fire  ( look out window when you lose a wing or go external view) and the FPS drop mentioned its a nice simulation but when paying premium price for a single aircraft you would expect these things to be right or at the very least be addressed in a timely manner.

I recorded multiple scenarios of the fire and frame rate issue and will post it on youtube so at least some will be aware. I definitely would not have purchased if I had known it would not be addressed by now.
