Ali Fish Posted January 28, 2013 Share Posted January 28, 2013 trully magnificent. couple of weeks ago i watched a video where a family group of deer in trouble in deep waters, swam to a boat and waited till they were gestured to come on board. shivering with cold there was no fear of the human, just fear of death. our place amung these species is remarkable. I heard that dolphins should be considered "non-human people", because they are self aware, have a social structure and language, and pretty much every other factor that defines a "person". Also, our brains grow tremendously as go through childhood, much more than any other creature. So while we might start out helpless we learn and adapt very well. But yes, certain birds (such as magpies, crows, ravens, maybe some parrots), dolphins, elephants, chimpanzees/bonobos, orangutans (but, AFAIK, not gorillas) have been shown to be self aware, sentient creatures. I'm not normally an animal rights activist, but I have a strong bias towards the more intelligent species. It's a travesty that they aren't provided more protections. However it's the brain-to-body size ratio, and neo cortex surface area, rather than brain size per se, which seem to be indicators of potential intelligence.
