Foul Ole Ron Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 If you got onto the virtual aerobatics server and take off from Sochi you can try carrier landing your P51. I haven't managed to do it yet - keep sliding off the front of the carrier into the sea. I don't think it's possible at all.
Suchacz Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 (edited) If you are landing against the wind strong enough, than you can land as a VTOL, a Harrier style  This way: Edited March 11, 2013 by Suchacz Per aspera ad astra! recoilfx Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I made a mission to do this for fun. I have the carrier set at 15knots and landing is very possible at that speed.

VIMANAMAN Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 (edited) It can be done without upsetting the flight boss. This is with the ship steaming at 20kts into 3mps winds giving a slight xwind on landing. Real world scenerio - I understand these beasts can do 30+ knots and it's a light wind. Will post trk and mis if get time. Edit - real world scenerio!! I meant the ships speed and course - not the fact a P51 was trying to park on it - end edit Edited March 12, 2013 by VIMANAMAN

DieHard Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Is this possible with the p51d? How can I set a mission to test it? According to Moa, any DCS aircraft can be modded (pre-dates World) with a tail-hook modding/scripting the necessary .lua file(s). I saw the post in my travels, but it may also be in the forums associated with his Stallturn server for FC2. Re: VNAO. I miss his FC2 server being up. Check and search the modding forum. Not sure you will see the hook, but it is supposed to function correctly. His Stallturn server Mod for FC2 allows for custom built missions / experiments in the mission editor. He has some fun carrier based planes to fly, but the P-51 is not one of them. Maximum carrier speed is around 30 knots, but you could set a very high, into the wind, wind speed, should slow you down. I guess you are limited to the Russian CV? Not sure if a USA CV is included in the World editor. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

You don't need high head winds or a particularly high speed deck... just 20kts into 3mps wind and landing slow is more than enough. Just line up with all the furniture out (modded tail hook?! not included) trimmed for as slow as she'll go, put it down very early, pin the tail to the deck with the elevators (to the stops), and break like crazy - making sure you release the brakes if the tail rises. Sounds like I'd better make the time to post the TRK.

VIMANAMAN Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) Hi Vimanaman, Nice landing. Can you share the mission file; Looks really nice with the low sun. I am not so good at creating missions... Thanks bluepilot76 - here's the mission - it's very simple, literally only done because I wanted to see if landing on the angled deck was pos - I found it is, with flaps max, keeping some power on, speed as low as pos, pin the tail to the deck, and brake like your life depends on it :) I'm breaking alot of planes though... VIMANAMAN Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) Don't know why I'm bothering to do this but I don't take kindly to someone questioning my integrity. diehard if you'd like to explain which part of this poor lndg (early practise) is arrested by a hook? Unless I'm missing something it seems more like the leap was on your side?
VIMANAMAN Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I didn't see him accuse you of anything. He just replied to the OP that it was possible to mod a tail hook to DCS planes. Unless I'm missing something it seems more like the leap was on your side? Sorry No - I've thought about this a fair bit, as I don't won't to go off on one, with anyone, unfairly. But the bottom line is the inference is the only way to land on the angled deck of a carrier is with a cheat, or with high deck speed or high wind speed. And as immediately prior to this post I had said that this is not necessary - and demonstrated it!! - the inference is that I'm cheating! Sorry to disagree with you mate.
NoJoe Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 A post might have gotten deleted in there somewhere; it could explain some confusion. Vimanaman, Awesome landing! And great job balancing with the brakes. I find the Mustang hard enough to land on a long straight runway, so my hat's off to you for the deck landings! I obviously need to go practice more! :D --NoJoe
Shahdoh Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Vimanaman, You may want to take another look, Diehard even quotes a question by jcomm. To me, it looks like he is trying to answer that question with a different solution. Guess we need Diehard to respond to be sure though. /salute

Unless I'm missing something it seems more like the leap was on your side? You tell him... LOL Just thought Message #1 author would like to know he could add a tail hook. I responded to Message #1. I remember the Saturday morning kids' shows of "Sky King" in the 1950's or 60's of him landing his twin engine non-military plane on a then, current aircraft carrier with no tail hook and he was stopped by the time he was to the tower island. But 1960's, the carriers were most likely longer. YouTube has a video of some courageous guys landing a C-130 on an aircraft carrier, also using no tail hook. Aces High WWII online flight sim, it is possible to land the German twin engine jet bomber on the not modded, but moving aircraft carrier that they use in game, no tail hook. Refuel, rearm and takeoff again. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I would like to know how to make a YouTube video from a Multiplayer sortie. I looked into using FRAPS.
