TM Warthog is neither as bad as people say it is nor as great as people say it is. It's great on the outside and very sturdy. The wiring work in the inside leaves a lot to be desired. It's actually pretty bad. Could it be made better? Yes. Is it better than others on the market? I think so. I haven't tried the upcoming Mamba, and the gimbal design looks solid.

I'm happy with TM, but wish I could have better innards.

PS: we hashed all of this out recently, didn't we?

+1 - Everyone that has had a go of my sim loves the Warthog instantly.

That was my point. YOURS maybe perfect. I'm not arguing with that. You got lucky to get a unit that was happened to be built as it was intended to. I've also talked to many hard-core simmers before I made my purchase. I watch these guys fly on stream and know what and how they fly. My issue is with the scale of variation in build quality that makes this product a total black box to buy. And after I saw the insides I knew why. I'm so disappointed in their engineering I'm not even going to bother trying to exchange it with TM. My time worth much more than that. I'll salvage what I can and move on.

Oh and btw, I have a background in engineering and also fly gliders so I don't have to have much imagination when I see the innards of the other product and hegykc's stick base displayed for all to see to know how and why it will work as I expect it to.

So yes, I'm very much interested in his stick system as I see some sound and passionate engineering behind it. So I'm here to support that. My previous posts only explain what drove me here. Guess all the others who are here to see this product take flight must be here out of boredom, right?

Just to illustrate what I expect from a stick in terms of feel. One of my t16000m that works perfectly (the other has developed a loose center) let's me hover the Huey in DCS literally by just tightening my grip and flexing some grip muscles. I don't have to stir the stick around. It moves only a few mm just like the real R22 stick when in a hover which I've flown. The soft center and utterly precise and fluid response of this particular stick let's me literally relax into the hover.

The HOTAS stick? Ha! You have to wrestle that thing even if I remove the big spring. It sticks so bad in almost any position. Yes you can "relax" into that stick position coz it's stuck there but you can not relax into the rhythm of control response required to keep ahead of the heli. Same applies to precision aiming with a WWII plane.

Flying the A-10c or F-15 in DCS or any airliner in MSF or Xplane with the HOTAS ? No problem. But the requirements are not the same either. So for the money it costs the HOTAS stick is very limited in it's application when it comes to feel. At least my particular one is. But at that cost I absolutely won't tolerate such a wide difference in quality. That is acceptable for a $30 stick but not for a $400 one. For $400 I want to see the kind of engineering AND THINKING that hegykc is demonstrating!

there would be the notch/clunk/detent like in the Airbus that I experimented with.

His responses were that the Super Hornet stick doesn't feel like that

But isn't the notch/clunk/detent exactly what the warthog has? Thats not very clear to me. I think a better question would be "does an F-18 feel like a hotas Warthog?" Much more to the point.

Don't get me wrong, I've had my warthog since christmas and I've loved every second of it, except for the sticktion.. but I'm also curious about this whole center feel debate thats been going on.

Just my two cents.

If you are unsure of what is being described I recommend you go back a few pages and re-read the discussion. You need to be familiar with a few different joysticks to understand the 'clunks' we are talking about.

From day one I used my Warthog, I noticed a small notch/clunk coming from the spring once I go away from center. it's kind of feeling of that clunk more than hearing it.

is this what you are referring to?

I am just reporting back for Hegykc's benefit in case he is considering various designs for his stick base.

I think the point Mtnbiker1998 is making is that the last few pages are just vague and subjective descriptions that are open to interpretation.

Really the only definitive way to confirm would be for your F18 friend to give the warthog a go to see how the stick and the real plane compare.

The fact that it's available in online stores can be an advantage though. Where I live, if you buy something in a brick and mortar store, you can't just return it if you don't like it, unless there is some fault in the piece you got. And even then they can just replace it for another if they wish and not give you your money back.

On the other hand, when you buy online you have two weeks to return the goods you bought and get your money back without even having to give any reason. You don't like the stick, simply return it and the only thing you lose is the shipping cost which is not that big within the country.

So buying online effectively gives you a two week trial period where you can play around with it and return it if you don'l like it. Trying it for only a moment in a brick and mortar store would not give you the same real opportunity to test it.

Where are you able to buy the Warthog online and return it within 2 weeks if you simply don't like it? I'd like to know because I am VERY interested in trying the Warthog out. Amazon states returns are based on defects etc, I did not see anything in their return policy otherwise.

In Poland (but I'm fairly sure whole EU has a similar law though I might be wrong and it may different in terms between countries) according to the law when you buy anything on the internet (only internet, not in a brick and mortar store) you have a 2 week period when you can just return the item to the seller without even having to give a reason. You don't like the item, you can return it and of course during the two weeks you have the right to unpack and use the item normally. The only thing you lose is the shipping cost back to the seller.

It's a very strong pro consumer law and can cause trouble for the shops, because they have to accept even damaged items and can only demand some recompense later...But the reasoning is, if the customer buys something they can't check personally (ie. on the internet) then this grace period for returns is needed.

Running an online shop myself, I can say that people surprisingly don't abuse this law and usually only a very small % decides to return the items if they did not like them or it was not as they imagined. So overall I think it's a decent law and can encourage people to buy more in internet shops because they risk less. And as said, I'm pretty sure that's based on a EU directive, although implementation in different EU countries may differ.

Exactly. My experience is with a T-flight X, CH fighterstick, and CH pro pedals. And of course the Hog. When I think center detent, I think like T-flight throttle and Pro pedals detent. Warthig isn't as bad as that, But there is a noticable center. I'm at work right now and when I get home I'll give em all a good wiggle around and confirm. I did read the previous pages, but I'll also skim over them again.

I cannot reccomend the warthog to anyone because of the gimbal. I pay premium price for a high end product and the gimbal is cheap molded plastic! I have to take mine apart some time and sand down some of the seams.

Grip is awesome, sensor is good, throttle is ok.

But the important part is horrible. I will consider a new base if he makes one.

You right. But mine #000175 Warthog in perfect conditions since 2010. Yes, I've replace the grease, but still.

So definitely recommended.

Only thing it still need is F-18 grip. :) ...and Su-27 grip as well!

Oh trust me, i love it. I even have an extension to help the stiction, but i don't feel like supporting them when i see how it was made...

Yeah, I know this feeling. I was terrified when I saw hog's liver first time. I even create huge angry and disappointed post here in forum (on RU).

But at the end of the day hog with extender (15cm for me), replaced grease (with Motul chain lube road) and rubber ring replaced with Teflon one - on the top on the market. There is just nothing to compare.

P.S. plastic ball suxx!

Yeah that build does 'suck'. I almost bought one of these but I've bypassed it in favor of a more DIY solution.

As for the movement though - you'll definitely know when you pass through the center point of either axis on the real F-18; there's a discernible 'bump' (probs due to the centering force, but nonetheless it is there).

I think center point "bump" is just a personal preference. I was frustrated once I moved to Warthog from Cougar. But now I absolutely happy that there no center bump in Hog.

I don't have any problems with the stick but with the throttle. The right throttle starts to be loose and wobbly in the mechanics and that really bothers me with this expensive equipment :(

@hegykc

I found this thread a few days ago and I read every post here. Your project which started with the idea to make a new F/A-18 grip grow up to a big business. It's just awesome!! Wish you all success and also luck for your business and hope you will make us very happy with your ideas soon ;-)

My question is little bit outside from the topic but hope you will answer indeed: Are there also ideas on your side making other hardware like MFD, switches boards (like these on the throttle of the TM Whartog), radio panel or a CDU (which would be my dream item)?

Short answer is yes, I think he has a quite a lot planned apart from joysticks :)
