Hubris Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Hell, ask some of us with servers to mirror for you when you're expecting big demand, but more importantly buy some better servers or something. The lack of capacity is rediculous. 5-10kbs I don't think it would be cost effective for ED to purchase extra servers just to handle a few days of heavy traffic. Besides, ED has used the same engine for the last 14 (?) years what makes you think they would spend the extra resources for a patch update? 1
howie87 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) OK, I started downloading when I got back from work at 5:20pm and went out. I've just got home and it's now 12:25am and the auto updater is still going. Is this a joke? Edited April 30, 2013 by howie87
Ramstein Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) it's downloading,, not breaking any records.. I have RoadRunner Turbo, but still is averaging about 50 kb/s  on a good download this thing will rock up to around 900 kb/s ... I want to go this route with update, so hopefully, I wil not have to redo any key and stick settings,, or else I will just snap... I had enough of that,,, especially with 3 or 4 sims with so many settings and the old Saitek is getting nitpicky on buttons.. jjohnson241 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Started Autoupdater about 10 am EDT. Updater crashed about 1630 with a hash error. Restarted about 1745 and have averaged about 10 KB/s since restart. It's now 1920 hrs. and I've got about 183 Mb left to download. Others have vented thier frustration with the performance of the update infrastructure (or lack thereof). I don't believe Torrent is the answer unless ED can guarantee a sufficent number of Seeds to support the demand. I had a similar experience with the 12.3 update, having taken a day and a half to complete that update. ED, it's not working!!! I was ready to purchase the UH-1H today but I'm not sure now whether I want to make this situation worse (if that's even possible) by expanding my installation. IJammer Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I have put DCS back in its box and will not even try to d/load until the rush is over. I have a very poor internet connection where I am anyway... so I will wait. Also, did I read on the header to this thread something about changing the text in the updater file to make it work? D'oh, this is all very disapointing! :( 1
howie87 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Well, good luck America. I've put my 7 hours in and I'm off to bed. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. I'm not all that bothered to be honest. Now, if it was the F/A-18 update though... Then you'd have a riot on your hands ;)
Wichid Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Took me about 2 hours to get the torrent up to speed. Seems to be a queue with the seeds. Going good now! Lyndiman AMD Ryzen 3600 / RTX 2070 Super / 32G Ram / Win10 / TrackIR 5 Pro / Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals

Bahger Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Some perspective for you: This morning at 08:00 I got onto Steam and downloaded an entire game, "Wargame: Airland Battle" (oh, is that title grammatically offensive...). The download was finished by 10:30 (including today's 800MB update), at which point I started the DCSW 1.2.4. d/l via the updater. Now it's 17:00 and the progress bar is not yet half-full: 458.1/1267.2 MB @ 16.3 KB/s. Edited May 1, 2013 by Bahger

Bahger Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Perspective would be the number of customers steam has and the associated number of servers and bandwidth they have to manage it all. Yup, that's part of it. But given today's performance, DCS's number of customers and bandwidth they have to manage it all is not quite as well harmonised, wouldn't you say? I'm not complaining (really). Flight sims are a niche product and this one is at the very top of the heap. But they should really take a look at this.
Hubris Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 omfg. I had 200 mbs left downloading at a staggering 0.2 kb/s and it crashed on me a third time with the hash mismatch. Time to start all over again =/

Chelco Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 My autoupdater can't even find the server now. I will just wait a couple of weeks. :music_whistling: Real and Simulated Wars
Leviathan Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 Cannot belive my d/l is already complete. I had calculated that it would take about 26 hours to load it, but it only took about 8 hours! :D
simtex Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Looks like this release is much more popular than the previous one. We are considering to implement torrents into autoupdater. Please do that. That would help a lot. As would using a proper CDN.
Anatoli-Kagari9 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) For me it made quite a difference to: 1) Cancel the updater after the first step, which updates only the updater / installer for the new 1.2.4 version ends and the second step - actual update, has started... 2) From the ED programs folder, re-start the updater and notice a much higher transfer rate :-) Edited May 1, 2013 by jcomm Flight Simulation is the Virtual Materialization of a Dream...
ebabil Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 this is the my worst update session ever. after 10 hours d/l and still 100mb to go. and downloading at 0,5-1,5kb per second. dcs had better improove their servers imo.
