Hi guys, went to try out one of the default missions in the A-10 folder, only to have the right engine fail as I was halfway down the runway :( As you can see from the track, I spun the yaw trim to the left, throttled back and tried to takeoff before I ran out of runway. I had to replay the track a few times to avoid the wingman, and, well, probably shouldn't have jettisoned the weapons that close to the ground, but I wasn't keen on trying to stop on the grass; plus it was the only way I could get the plane in the air.

I also realise I let the fire burn for way too long, but as I am still a very new pilot, I had my hands full trying to keep it in the air without stalling. After yet another track replay, I tried throttling back immediately after the engine cuts out, but it still catches fire shortly after, rendering me with an engine full of suppressant that will not restart later anyway :(

The mission started me on the runway ready to go, all I did was derp around with the TAD a little, turn on the TGP and set the autopilot to Path mode.

My main question is, what happened to the engine, and is there anything I could've done at that point to salvage it? I also realise I should've run the engines up with the brakes on, but any other tips you guys have will be much appreciated :D

Sounds like a bird-strike. Takeoff, extend and land with one engine. Taxi to apron and repair.

I would turn bird strikes off in options. The frequency of engine failures when used is unrealistic as noted in another thread.

Not only the frequency, but also the results. A catastrophic engine failure and fire from a bird strike isn't exactly realistic. Not unless you hit some new genetically modified high explosive incendiary sparrow of course.

Last year my jet came back from a sortie. Did my intake inspection, no damage. When I did my exhaust inspection I found what was left of a bird. Talked to the pilot, engine indication never fluctuation, no damage, nothing.

I had another bird go down the #2 engine a few years back, damaged a couple blades but ripped a big hole in the outboard engine cowling. Jet made it make in one piece, no engine fire, just simply shut her down.

So yes, the simulation that a bird causes catastrophic failure and a fire in DCS is WAY overkill.

Haha, hillarious.

It would be cool to have Birdstrikes here and there without fatal damage.

Do you guys know how they (used to) test bird impact and engine performance?

Note the cannon at 0:39 :D Frozen chickens!

Its also hilarious to see the impact testing on the windshield.
