Hi All

Badger here, with an issue I'm SURE I've read a post on in these very pages, but can I find it? (No..no I can't. That wasn't the question.)

This problem is my mothers fault! Clearly she should have given me more carrots in my formative years, or at least made sure I ate the ones I was given. She didn't, I didn't and the result is that now making pretty graphics on my puter screen, means a trade off with trying to read text which makes my tired eyes rebel.

Funny thing is I really like Carrots now. Ah well..

Anyway, I've been struggling slightly with the way that when using TrackIR, the tiny text on my HUD, which used to come closer when I leaned in with the mark one eyeball, now moves away from me as I lean. It makes me feel like Wile E Coyote! (See..the text is the Road Runner and...no? Hmmph.)

I'm have a feeling that in that post I found before, the original poster was not actually offered a solution as such, but instead assured that this is a nod to realism, as the "infinite zoom" HUD text is just the same way on the HUDs of the real life pilots and that moving your head forward with TrackIR is supposed to simulate..well...moving your head forward, not zooming.

Well that's all well and good realism fans and never let it be said that I'm adverse to little bit of realism here and there, I loves it I tells ya. Yet sometimes in our pushing of realism to the nth degree, I think that we fail to take into account that with true realism, the first thing to be thrown out of the cockpit window would be most of us armchair pilots! The likes of most of us would never been let loose in one of these beasts and thank the Lord I say!

So while realism in the temple of the Hog is a wonderful thing. I think we can all agree that sometimes it has to be tempered with some optional cutting of the slack to compensate for the inherent naffness of some of it's more..challenged (if enthusiastic) acolytes.

In my case let's face it... I need new glasses is what I need. But what are ya gonna do.. I spent the money on a TrackIR instead!

So how thrilled was I when a friend of mine sent me a solution provided right there in the A-10C control options.

Look in the axis controls, says he, for "zoom view" and then in the TrackIR column select "TrackIR_Z"

And Lo it doth work. I was like a blind man but now I see! I lean forward and that crafty HUD text is locked in place. No longer can it flee into the distance laughing at me as it went. (Because that's just what it was doing you know..oh yes.) Now I can read my heading with no squinting and guessing and I like to think that the free world is probably a safer place because of it. :pilotfly:

Of course there's a price to pay and this is where I hope that you fellas might be able to make my joy complete.

Before, the HUD view on starting the sim, would start in close and then slide slowly out until eventually it arrived and settle at a position that actually I was rather comfortable with. (Aside from not being able to read the text obviously.) But now it starts sliding out, then suddenly resets to a position just that little bit too far forward to be comfortable.

So I slide my chair back a little and yes..that's more or less where I want it... but now my arms are too short to sit comfortably for an extended flying session!! :megalol: Seriously..it's a joke isn't it? Somebody is playing a joke?

I can't zoom out slightly with the "/" and "*" keys, because even though I didn't delete those default options, they don't work anymore because presumably I overrode them when I mapped the function to "TrackIR_Z".

I turned to the TrackIR software itself and sat looking at the grid in the hopes of finding a key which would move the default view out a little for my profile. But unable to find one I found myself instead leaning forward slightly, then hitting the re-center view key, which then when I sat back, saw my view point a little further out than it was and this seemed to translate to the sim as I "felt" (but wasn't sure, so I'll have to experiment more) that I did in fact end up a liiiiitle further back than I was.

Of course this is a lot of messing about and it remains to be seen whether that adjustment is something which is now saved to my TrackIR profile, or whether I'd have to do it every time. I'm going to assume it's every time, since you do have to center the TrackIR each time you turn it on. In fact now I type that out loud.. d'oh!

If I am reading into your problem correctly, I don't think what you want is possible as the z-axis will read the position based on the track IR input, blocking out any key presses and such.

Perhaps you could adjust the axis configuration, maybe set it to slider mode and adjust the levels so it starts where you desire. Then moving your head in would temporarily zoom in?

Also your writing style was very refreshing and quite enjoyable to read.

Ten out of ten would read again

Hi Badger, :)

My solution is to lean slightly in to the screen (so it zooms in slightly), recenter the TrackIR view to there (F12 by default, I believe?), then lean back to my comfy sitting position. Viola, the zoom is slightly further out now! ;)

Map the zoom to something else and not track_ir. I use the mic switch to zoom in and out and trackIr to move my head. Many map zoom to a slider but I never liked putting it on a slider as it would jitter.

Anyways try mapping, zoom in, zoom out, to some switch on your HOTAS.

Jittering on the "slider zoom" can be prevented with a user Curve axis assign in form of a stair ,so i read.

Just in case it helps someone reading here.

I have my zoom axis for all combat sims (DCS & RoF) set to my rudder toe axis. It works beautifully and also keeps my fingers free for all the HOTAS buttons. I use zoom continually while flying to look at instruments and bandits and everything. I have to give up having right and left toe brakes on the P-51 but its a fair trade. There's a specific curve you need to assign in DCS to get it to work right.

Applying the increase HUD font mod then play with the right ctrl+shift and * / keys worked pretty well for me.

Well, I can agree that we need ED-type carrots that's for sure... About your issue, I think you might wanna call PeterP on these forums, ask him to give you the default zoom view file for DCS 1.1.1.1. (As far as I remember, the auto zoom out at unpause was a feature of 1.1.1.1 and IIRC, I had to press Num / then Num Enter to cancel it. Your complaint, is that you want it back, so you just open trackIR and center it, the zoom out should be your cockpit's default view, so that when you lean forward, you achieve good text readability in the sense of the default position most folks on youtube present (canopy rivets not shown). Am I correct so far?

Of course of course! I was on the right track look, but I was over complicating it. I was trying to do in the TrackIR software, what as NoJoe has pointed out, I could simply have done in the cockpit. Now don't I look silly.

:megalol: I don't care though, I'm immune to feeling silly. My message to new pilots throughout the forum is this.. Here at Badger Towers, we'll continue to ask the silly questions so that you don't have to. :smilewink:

I may be missing the entire problem but I think I understand it and have noticed it as well. I reconfigured the zoom to my friction wheel on the HOTAS throttle quadrant and it works very well. Just bump it forward a bit and you've zoomed the view in and can see pretty well. Then bump it back out if to the perfect zoom if you need to see gauges and whatnot while flying around.

Good luck and if I missed something...my apologies.

Hi All

I can't zoom out slightly with the "/" and "*" keys, because even though I didn't delete those default options, they don't work anymore because presumably I overrode them when I mapped the function to "TrackIR_Z".

Badger

You need to unbind the / and * zoom keys from TrackIR so you can use them normally again.

The forward and backward position of you head is unrelated to the function of the / and * zoom keys. The Z axis with respect to TrackIR is for your head's position in the cockpit, not the ability to zoom your vision forward. The zoom keys on the keyboard are made to mimic the human eyes' limits to see far away objects.

If you hop in FC3, you'll notice on the lesser modeld airframes that leaning in and leaning out mimics the zoom keys, but in a full 6dof cockpit, you do not get this effect and instead must use the zoom keys to adjust your zoomed in/out level. Once you adjust that level, you can lean in and out as you like to look at the cockpit stuff or out the window.

Check out people flying the hog on YouTube and you'll see that while they lean in and out to look at the instruments, they also clearly use the zoom keys to adjust zoom levels

I'm sorted out on this now with NoJoe's suggestion. But thanks to Gryphon and adese for the extra alternatives and once again to everyone for the usual speedy and informative responses.
