MegOhm_SD Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I am certainly no expert but this is fun watching you guys try to figure out the Huey and P51... Hang in there..it all becomes clear before you know it... Be sure to turn off the T/O & Rudder assists... MegOhm_SD Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Oh gawd taxiing. I have much better luck hitting the L/R wheel brakes to turn; I gave up on unlocking the tail wheel. I would unlock it, give full right rudder and the plane would turn left and then the tail wheel would get stuck in whatever position it was in and wouldn't straighten out :joystick: Might be a glitch, I have this happen once in awhile. With the tail wheel unlocked you have to be careful with speed...you may want to consider tuning your rudder axis if it is too sensitive, same with toe brakes Cooler Master HAF XB EVO , ASUS P8Z77-V, i7-3770K @ 4.6GHz, Noctua AC, 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro, EVGA 1080TI 11GB, 2 Samsung 840 Pro 540GB SSDs Raid 0, 1TB HDD, EVGA SuperNOVA 1300W PS, G930 Wireless SS Headset, TrackIR5/Wireless Proclip, TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, 75" Samsung 4K QLED, HP Reverb G2, Win 10

I popped over to check the DL price and saw all is on sale! Ill be DLing (and eventually learning) A-10C, Black Shark & the P-51. Super excited! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Nealius Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Have you guys ever crashed on a replay track when you didn't crash during the actual flight? I took Ferocious Frankie up today and had a hard, bouncing landing but still walked away. When I played the replay track I crashed on landing. Then when I played the track back a second time it played perfectly 0_o
Pman Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Tracks are not 100% reliable Try not to time accelerate through them seems to help
Pman Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 We had alot of first timers on the VA server last night what a huge amount of fun! Come into out TS guys if you are unsure and hunt out one of the seasoned pilots and they will nearly always help where they can!

Mainstay Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I got it even though i thought i never would but kinda getting annoyed by the dollar mark on the icon ingame. Now my interface looks clean :)
Fishbreath Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 (edited) 'sound off' is slang for 'complain' in the UK, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the content of this thread! :) Really? I had no idea. If I were to complain, it would be about DCS engine performance, I think, and not about the Mustang. :P Edit: okay, now I have a question. In the cold start instant action mission, I can usually get the engine to catch and run on the first try. In a mission I authored, the ramp-start P-51s are a lot more reticent to come to life—they'll catch, but even after I set the mixture to run, they'll sputter and die, no matter what I do with the throttle or anything else. Sometimes some oil dilution makes it work, but other times I can lean on that switch for a minute or two and nothing happens. The fuel pumps are on, fuel pressure from the left-hand tank is good, the throttle is opened a bit, and prop RPM is set to full. Am I doing something else wrong? Foul Ole Ron Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Prime more probably. I usually give it about 5 seconds priming before attempting to start. I think the in game tutorial might say 3 seconds which seems to be a bit short if you want to keep it going after setting to run.

Its perfectly possible to start the stang with the manifold throttle at idle Its just about timing between the ignition switch, the mags and the fuel mixture
Harry.R Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I bought this this morning, it was too tempting at the price, but frustratingly I can't get my DCS:W 1.2.1 to update... :( Downloading the updated version torrent now. Once it downloads I'll join be trying to join the 3 pointer club, but might stick to wheelers for now ;)
Fishbreath Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 Hey, I'm just delighted when I can actually see the runway at the end of my approach. That big engine out the front makes it a lot harder to come in as shallow as I'm used to doing. That big engine out the front makes it a lot harder to come in as shallow as I'm used to doing. You should see how I land the stang, I turn base before I even go past the runway on downwind, turn in and im over the numbers before I level out for touch down :joystick:
Fishbreath Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 The last approach I flew last night, I was maintaining about 1500fpm of descent until I could see the runway on either side, then I just made a really aggressive flare. BigMotor Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Just a quick note to say I think ED made a good decision regarding this sale. It's great to see all the interest and new people coming on board. Flying DCS P51 has been a real hoot but kinda lonely at times, looks like that will change for the better. Squadron forming time!
Fishbreath Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 I'll probably be venturing online one of these days, provided I can find a place. I might also look into whipping up a few A2G missions, or maybe some co-op air combat missions, for the P-51 multiplayer community specifically. Seems like a pretty limited set out there so far. Merlin-27 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Guys, great to see all the excitement for the P-51D. You are right, the skies have been a bit lonely so far but there are people out there trying to bring it together. Keep an eye on the Combat Server Bulletin thread HERE if you prefer the combat/vintage WW2 environment or check out the the virtual acrobatics server if you prefer formation flying/acrobatics. They have quite an established setup over there and we will hopefully have a full-time combat server up before long. Yeah there are few places for combat, We have alot of Mustangs on the Virtual Aerobatic server, if your looking for a freeflight, formation or aero work then we are always busy and there is normally someone around to help should you need or want it. If you are after combat then I'd say keen an eye on Merlins thread

Bra1n Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I got p51 in sale too. Like someone said shame about the lack of combat mission, but im spending so much time learning how to fly it lol. Bit different from the A10. Taxi was a hard one for me untill i realise its best to use left or right break to tight turn. Taking off wasn't so hard......but landing, oh my god.
TimeKilla Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Am really surprised as, I am not into fixed winged and fly only helicopters in DCS but totally love the P51D and have not been able to put it down feels like learning fixed wing in the correct order before working up to jets and such. Really happy with it wish there was more dog fighting servers as not been able to get a dog fight yet only ground attack. Love the way other than engine management the P51D is really Army proof and easy to work out launching rockets etc. It's a joy to just learn how to fly it and do combat later. :joystick: YouTube :pilotfly: TimeKilla on Flight Sims over at YouTube.
Royraiden Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 (edited) The more I fly the Mustang the more I love it!It has a steep learning curve and Im still getting familiarized with DCS but I have been having a blast. At first I couldnt fight the AI no matter what I did, then I selected the external view by accident and noticed I had drop tanks:doh: After noticing that, I was able to enter the dogfight on equal terms with the AI 190, and yesterday managed to shoot him down:joystick:.It is so rewarding on this sim. Thank you DCS. Edited June 23, 2013 by Royraiden [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
