cichlidfan Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 ... he won't be under the sort of pressure from publishers like in the past so I'm behind him and have great hopes for DCS WW2 good luck with it...... That is certainly one aspect of this that should benefit both luthier and the customers. He should be able to control the schedule, which will give him much better ability to control the quality of the product. Even if it takes longer than planned, it should be that much better for it. lighthaze Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Flyable bombers only show up in stretch goals. We are planning everything you're asking for. Just a pinch of crew management (think B-17 Flying Fortress) would be absolutely amazing.

Chivas Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) Good to cya back Luthier. Since this is going to be a European Campaign that could include B17's, is there any chance the map will be large enough that the bombers will be able to takeoff/RTB from Britain or France. If not how big a map do you plan to build, and what are your thoughts on expanding the map for a realistic bombing campaign at a later date? I'm not a huge fan of the current DCS terrain, but I'm hoping the new EDGE graphic engine will allow you to develop an immersive WW2 terrain. ~Salute~ JG27_Chivas edit....I see now that its a large Normandy map. Which I would assume would include the southern part of England. Edited September 2, 2013 by Chivas
Darkmater Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I feel the loss of a single DCS world leaves this at a competitive disadvantage, there are many ww2 sims today, but none of them lets you combine modern and ww2 type scenarios (Ala Final Countdown movie). Some may think this a joke, but honestly, a structure where you can bring modern force to a ww2 setting, though not historically accurate still has some value. The issue today is that it just doesn't work in reverse, bringing a P-51 into a modern era is not fun to be had. Taking a F-15c or A-10 into ww2, and now you have something special. Also, I am all about sim, but in the end I feel the ww2 market is a bit saturated. The opportunity to play the "what if's" is what makes DCS World truly competitive against the rest of the sim offerings. Furthermore, when it comes to Kickstarter you have to stand out with something unique, 777 isn't doing a Kickstarter, so what is your competitive advantage, in my mind its DCS World, and the "what if's" it allows. In the end you have my Kickstarter funds once its confirmed that I can run this all under one roof, maybe I am the minority, but that's where my voting dollars are. Here's to F-18's fighting the good fight over ww2 Germany. :) (Hopefully 1 year from today) P.S. I would like my current CA module to work in DCS ww2 if that's how its going to be. I don't want to have to purchase a a special ww2 CA version. Thanks,

Uh, aren't you forgetting something? Like, full systems management? What makes DCS stand out--makes it more than competitive--is its realism, in not only flight physics but also systems management. 777's new sim-game can't hold a candle to DCS in the realism department, since BoS is going to be only Flaming Cliffs level and not DCS level.

Strider21 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Long time lurker here. I am definitely excited and will likely support the kickstarter. Mainly because a mid-late war Westren Front sim is so rare these days. What was the last one? Il2 AEP? 2004? I feel this is going to fill a big void in the market. Good luck to the team!

Exactly. I want a clickable cockpit with full engine controls, and I'm willing to pay for it. Also, the Eastern front has been done to death in the Il-2 series. cichlidfan Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 As you said the aircraft will be able to insert into DCS World, but what about map, AI vehicles, ships, aircraft...? Can we plug all that in DCS World and make true sandbox or there will be some limitations? I'm actually not too sure on the technical details of sharing content, so I may be completely off here. In other words, whatever we the developers release for WWII or World should plug into either. However any content that's not a part of a specific module, well, I have no idea. . 1 ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! Hans-Joachim Marseille Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 (edited) “We want to open a new page in WWII combat simulations,” said Matt Wagner of Eagle Dynamics. “At the same time we strive to recapture everything that made the flight simulations of the past great, starting with a thick spiral-bound manual and comprehensive training, and ending with great free-for-all multiplayer. We want to keep creating the content that we enjoy creating and that our fans enjoy playing for years to come.” Great to see WWII will get it's own, separate world within DCS. Bring on that Bf 109 and thick spiral-bound manual with coffee stains. If feasible, a foldable Jäger-Gradnetzkarte to plot missions and mark kill quadrant. It would be nice if kill quadrant, plane type, height, time and date could be logged. And a revenge mission for German blood spilled during the Falaise pocket massacre (strafing of white-flagged columns by the RAF). Best of luck to Ilya and Igor (the Flanker guy). cichlidfan Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Everything luthier1 posted in the English forum today, after the initial announcement. Follow the links for context. Hope that helps people trying to catch up. There is more on the Russian side. The Mustang and the Dora will be a part of the initial release. DCS WWII will be its own product however. It will not be a DCS World plugin, but an entirely new environment. Other products will be mutually compatible, so you'll be able to plug an A-10 into DCS WWII if you so choose, or a B-17 into DCW World. We thought long and hard about this. We figured that it's better to have two environments in the long run, otherwise we'll have a really weird jumble. Once DCS World grows to have a lot more modern aircraft, and DCS WWII will have more vintage warbirds, it's best to have them separate by default. We think. Time period. We figured it'd be a little weird to have A-10C strafing Panzers over Calais, or B-17s bombing modern-day Crimea. It is a shared platform. There really isn't two separate branches of it from a development point of view, just end-user. September 5th. We have a whole series of videos, interviews, etc. We'll see how well we do with kickstarter. Core game will have one large Normandy terrain. If we hit stretch goals, we'll have more maps. Right. Less than a year from now, or a bit more time if we hit stretch goals. ;) It's probably not a major issue for most fans; at least less of an issue than constantly getting your suspension of disbelief jolted by out-of-place objects for the time period. We actually think that a large part of the community will want to have things separate. I can understand the majority opinion here on the forums right now, because at this time DCS is still a modern jet sim with a strong but limited foray into WWII. In my personal experience though, a large number of WWII fans don't care for modern aviation, and vice versa. I mean, we'll look at install numbers and see how the inidividual modules do. If we turn out to be horribly wrong and everyone just plugs everything together and uses it as a giant sandbox, or rather two giant merged sandboxes, then we may reconsider. In any case, like I said, it's mutually compatible. If you want to merge the two products, just plug all WWII content into your DCS World. Modules will be mutually compatible. So if you bought say an A6M5 Zero in 2016, or whenever it is we may end up in the Pacific, you could choose to put it into WWII or World. However, upon the initial release of DCS WWII I'm not sure if you could manually move things around and just put a MiG-21 into WWII or something like that. I'm actually not too sure on the technical details of sharing content, so I may be completely off here. In other words, whatever we the developers release for WWII or World should plug into either. However any content that's not a part of a specific module, well, I have no idea. I admit you guys are not the core audience for this decision. This will however really help people new to DCS, especially WWII fans who don't care for modern jets, to just go and do WWII without worrying about MiG-29s on their tail. This of course also applies to modern aviation fans who just want to fly the Su-25 and not download B-17s. We are still undecided on the vehicles and other secondary WWII content. That's the idea. There is however a problem with source data for some of the planes. A P-51 is almost unique in how well it is documented. With many other WWII planes there are grey areas. If there are no authentic flyable ones today, and source data from 1940s is lacking - then by definition we cannot be as true-to-life as the Mustang, because we have nothing to compare things to. But the general approach is the same. Oh, and since I already left, one more point. Separate installs also allow us to create a separate WWII-themed GUI. It's more important than it seems! We're not planning any changes to the mission editor for DCS WWII specifically. The free base for DCS WWII will contain several flyable aircraft. The exact set depends on whether we hit Kickstarter stretch goals. We can probably finish the basic game without the kickstarter, but it'll be a little less of everything, especially on the ground. Basic kickstarter funding we're looking for will allow us to comfortably do everything we wish to do and have all the time that we need, which is the luxury I personally have never had in my entire career. Depends on stretch goals. We'll have the complete list published on the 5th. There is no emphasis on online play! I myself am actually a primarily offline player. We are definitely planning extensive single-player with comprehensive, historical campaigns. There will be at least one campaign for each flyable aircraft in all stretch goals. The B-17 and Me.262 are not flyable in the basic version. Yup. Flyable bombers only show up in stretch goals. We are planning everything you're asking for. Less than a year for the core game; a little more if we hit stretch goals. Yes, yes, and yes. Depending on your contribution level you may even directly contribute to in-game content, such as paintschemes, pilot appearance, etc. There will be several flyable aircraft in the free version. The reason we are doing a kickstarter is precisely this. I have never once in my career had enough time and money to develop the project as I wanted it. It was always a - "I need X dollars and Y months to build this." "OK, we'll give you 0.7X and Y-6 months, and if you don't do everything plus a few extra features, we're shutting you down." I did not enjoy that, the team did not enjoy that, and the fans did not enjoy that. I have absolutely no desire to go down that road again. I swore off flight sims altogether after the last fiasco. The fact that I am back means that I am hoping to turn a new page. If you are asking for assurances though, of course I can't offer anything but words at this point. The initial release will be available free of charge though, so I really do not see what you have to lose when you try it out. Conversely, I see absolutely no reason to release a broken game for free, thus making no money initially and losing any chance of making any in the future. We have a symbiotic relationship with ED. In any case, final quality check is on them, not us. kontiuka Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 ^ Nice summary! I'm interested in WWII stuff but not nearly as much as modern flight. However, if supporting this project benefits DCS in general, such as furthering along EDGE as well as other universal things, then I may participate in the kickstarter for those reasons.
