Kuky. About "The game zooms out a bit". Are you refering to when pressing Numpad_Enter? I've read somewhere in the forums before that the sim for some reason does not start in it's default FoV as defined by the Lua's it's only when you press Numpad_Enter that you are actualy at default FoV.

Posted

Ok, so then yes, we're definitely talking about the same parameter. I presume you were using a similar FOV with your 3-screen setup? I guess your standards must be much higher than mine. :)

Posted

With 3x 27" I used up until now, I had 60 deg FoV for each viewport/monitor. Minimal stretching with still fairly wide view. Now with the 58" TV I thought I could go higher but with 70 deg and more the stretching starts to show more noticeable (for me anyway).

Lxsaper, with single monitor/viewport, the game always zooms out a bit when mission starts... It gets to higher FoV then what I would set.... centering the view with num5 resets the view to the values that are specified in SnapViews.lua file which includes FoV also. With 3 view ports and the game doesn't zoom out.

Gutted, but mine would be going straight back to the shop...

I found this tool on a home theatre forum to calculate your FOV:

myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html

I worked mine out to be approximately 70 degrees on a 55" at 3 feet...

nice tool, tonight I finished most of the changes on my flying setup, fixed the TV lower and little closer (my head is now looking at center of the screen and with TV on desk I was looking at bottom 1/4 of the screen... much better and more natural viewing)... works out I have around 77° FoV now, I'm gonna use that in DCS :)

well, what can I say, on max setting, 4xAA it still runs alright (some cockpits are more FPS heavy, but in most I get 20-ish FPS when on ground/runway, which I find alright, up in air 30-50 I think, so it's quite playable.

This TV has really good image and color reproduction... those 2 stuck pixels I have, only 1 is visible on dark image, the other I haven't noticed at all when flying... so it's not that bad as I first though it will be.

The TV position (me looking at center of the screen) is now very natural... and setting FoV in game to match real live FoV is pretty good, its easier to see aircraft (visual) in dogfight, and reading instruments is as easy as it gets, everything in cockpit is crisp clear... now I wish I could get 2 more and put them to left and right side :D (but no $$$ for that, or PC power to run it ;) )

Overall, its was still a worth purchase... I can imagine what it would feel like to have VR (Oculus looking at you) to have as clear image as this TV, and more FoV... it would have to be surreal and can't wait for that next :)

Thanks Kuky, I'm in... Ordered a second 780 to get ready for EDGE, etc and once that's plugged in I'll take the plunge.

I spoke to JB Hi-Fi about their replacement policy on dead pixels and they promised to give me a written guarantee that if there are ANY dead pixels they'll replace it, no questions asked. It might be worth giving the place you got it from a call...

Ah just like I imagined it! Thanks Kuki! Wish I had the dough to fork out. But someday those things will be a lot cheaper.

Shame about those pixels. Over here most places have a return if not satisfied policy that I would be sure to take advantage of if that happened to me.

I am pretty sure I could have returned it and get another one, but I just couldn't be bothered to get the monitor back into the box (needs 2 people to do it) then drive back, wait for another one (they had only 1 in stock and 1 on display)... so it's all good, it was my choice not to return it... honestly I don't see them when I fly, I only see the lower one when it's very dark image in background, and the second one I really have to look for it to see it, I don't notice it at all (unless I specifically look for it)

Guys,

Really looking for a similar setup soon.

Do i understand that, with current 4k tv's, you are at 30Hz limitation now?

Referring to lack of display port or hdmi 2.0

Hey Slick,

Recently upgraded my main rig to a 780ti with a 49" UHD and it was nice but the refresh rate did impact.

So I've upgraded my 2nd rig to a GTX970 (everything the same except graphics) and WOW, the refresh rate has increased considerably. The 970 gets very hot at max settings and 4K so I may have turn things down a little or get another 970. The price on the 970's makes it quite affordable for two though.

For me the 780ti is a very nice card but the 970 with HDMI2 has sealed it for 4K.

Next will be 3 x curved UHD screens I think :)

Since 30 Hz really isn't playable, and now that the NVIDIA 9xx series are out with HDMI 2.0, we should really see 4K kick off at 60 Hz!

Been thinking about one of the curved Samsung 4K's. Should be amazing for flight sims!

Hey Guys, and Gals.

I am relatively new to gaming and only became involved cuz I am hooked on DCS Huey. Thats really all Im interested in doing for now.

All I know bout PC sytems is what I glean from you all on these forums, to which my wife says I've become addicted. I'm hoping that I'm not jammin up this thread with my basic questions.

I am very interested in the 4K display route (to claustrophobic to think bout helmets). I understand that I should be lookin at 60hz. I just want to make sure my rig is ready/optimized for it.

I am assuming that my graphics card dictates whether or not i got HDMI2

(yah, I'm that green).

This is what i got.

Intel i7 4770k 3.5/3.9 Ghz Turbo 8 MB Overclocked.

8GB Cosair vengeance DDR3-1600 (2x4GB).

NVDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB

30GB Cosair Nova 2 SSD Caching

1TB Seagate 7200 rpm 64 MB Cache SATA 6G

ASUS 27" 1920x1080 LED

Trac IR

(got Display Port)

Please advise as to what needs upgrading and/or how misguided I am.

If I'm understanding correctly, I can run 60Hz thru my Display Port.

BUT is 2 GBs on my graphic enough?

Hey Chic, it all depends on how much you're willing to spend. If you want 4K max settings at 60 fps and above (thinking about the new engine, too) you're going to want to upgrade your graphics card anyway. Most TVs don't have DisplayPort, apart from the Panasonic 4K TVs, so you'll need some GTX 970's or 980's anyway if you want HDMI 2.0. I'm assuming you want a big 4K TV instead of a smaller 4K monitor. I'd get a couple of GTX 970's, which is the best bang for your buck, if your motherboard can do SLi. You've got a few options with HDMI 2.0 4K TVs - the cheapest option being the Vizio P series TVs, and more expensive being LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and other ones. Like I said, it's all up to how much you're willing to spend. The Vizio P TVs only have 4:2:0 color at 60 hz, the Samsung one's are supposed to do full color but they aren't working right now, the LG TVs apparently do full color, and the Panasonic TVs aren't available yet (in the US).

If you're into home theater, too, you could upgrade your setup and the TV that you watch at once by getting a 4K OLED TV when it arrives this year.

It is a pretty hard thing to currently find a 4K that is decent for gaming. As you said, you want 4k, HDMI 2.0 and/or DisplayPort to get that tasty 4k/60p and on top you want very low input lag. It is not that extreme for DCS, but if you also play other games on that screen, it becomes very important.

Lucky you, you are in the US. Have a look at the Vizio P-Series. Very good value for the money and reportedly also really great for gaming. I wish Vizio would export these outside the US/Canada. It doesn't have DisplayPort, mind you, but all the HDMI 2.0 goodness a guy could want.

You might run into video memory issues though, there is a reason why the GTX 9xx series is 4GB. And it does much more efficient memory management than the previous Kepler-based cards (GTX 6xx and 7xx series), so it is not an apples-to-apples comparison between the older 4GB models of the GTX 680/770 and the 4GB of the Maxwell 9xx. Anti-Aliasing and other memory-heavy postprocessing things could be off the table, but at these resolutions chances are you won't be needing them anyway.

So since your graphics card doesn't do proper 4k/60p an upgrade would be in order, but there is a workaround. Since a very recent driver version, you can do 4k/60p oder HDMI 1.4 but you lose a bit of color accuracy which might result on color banding and overall a bit shitty colors. So in the end it's up to you whether you want to upgrade your graphics card as well while you're at it.

Aeliusg, Thanks loads for your time.

I've spent last five hours of my day off researching this.

Been thinkin bout gettin Panasonic 4k with Display Port as per Kuky.

I'm thinkin that will get me up and running @30 fps with my current rig (please confirm).

I can later upgrade my rig with the GTX 900 series. Not sure if i can support SLi. Do i really need 2 cards. I run a MainGear Potenza Z87 which are "compacts". I think space may be an issue. Remember right now I'm exclusively a DCS Huey guy but do like max settings.

Am i correct in assuming that i can run 1080 at 60-120 Hz.

Thanks again for your support.

It's been confirmed that the Vizio P does 1080p at 120 hz with very low input lag. You might want to ask Kuky about how well the Panasonic plays with that. Your GTX 770 will be able to handle 4K at 30 fps for now, but you'll want to upgrade if you want 4K at 60 fps with higher settings when EDGE comes out.

Well I am running my pc still on HD7970 and it's still giving me playable FPS. Like other people have said it depends on how much you want to spend. Its hard to recommend someone to spend lots of money but if you want to be safe and not get stuck with 30FPS in case the TV you get can't do 60FPS at 4K res then either get the same TV I got that has display port or check if some have HDMI port that can run 60Hz (some TV's have 3-4 HDMI ports and one of them is labeled for 60Hz). But then I would also recommend you upgrade video card to GTX980 (I am thinking getting it also)

Appreciate the input.

I just ordered the Panasonic.

Will see how it plays with what I got. I'll report back.

I'm certain I will want to upgrade. I learned from the people at MainGear who built my computer that Motherboard and box size preclude an SLi config.

I'm concerned that, if I get just the single GTX980, I'm gonna want more when EDGE gets here.

Odds are I'll cut bait and just get a whole new rig. It's gonna be costly but I'm falling for this Sim stuff, particularly the Huey.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hey Slick

Here's the site and the unit that Kuky turned me on to. yes, it has a display port.

http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/TC-58AX800U

Interesting caveat. The unit lists for $3300. I ordered it last nite @ 9pm for $1999. Around 1am this morning I went back to the site just to check on the dimensions of the set. I was surprised to see that the unit was further marked down to $1499. I promptly cancelled My order and repurchased at the new price. As of this moment, I see that the price is back at $1999.

I'm anxious to get it up and running.
