well, to me, I think that the MiG-21 is a very ugly airplane, no advanced avionics such as an A-10C or F-15E in the version represented in the module ( operating complicated systems is what makes it fun for me ), you know, it's too old and... Russian cockpits feel really weird to me.

Possibly way off topic - but ...

I really like the Mig-21bis idea, for the same reason you list: "operating complicated systems is what makes it fun for me". I like Russian aircraft for the same reason I like a manual transmission in a vehicle: I like to be the one making the decisions.

There's just enough technology and automation in Russian aircraft to allow a skilled pilot to get the job done. He may have to keep track of a lot in his/her head, and use the Mark I eyeball a lot (that's the sole targeting computer in the Su-25, after all), but it's the challenge of dealing with the complexity that makes it fun for me. Maybe not operating complicated systems, but being in the middle of complicated systems :)

But everyone has different preferences, and none of them are wrong :)

Also - the Mig-21 is old! 1955 vs. 1977 for the A-10C and 1986 for the F-15E.

IMHO the most compelling reason to have the MIG21 module is the simple fact that it is THE MOST EXPORTED fighter plane ever built... There are more Mig-21s bought than most other fighter aircraft COMBINED.. They are VERY old but they are still in use today so definitely relevant for DCS especially considering the fact that we are now looking at multiple time periods... MIG21 is relevant for the Vietnam era all the way thru today..

From that standpoint it is an excellent choice..

I think that it's important to support the Mig-21bis on the principle that we want 3rd party developers to succeed at creating content for DCS World. If we had half a dozen dev teams publishing an airframe once every 2-3 years, that's 2-3 new quality planes every year. I'd love that.

From what I've seen, the MiG-21bis quality is kick-ass, and it's a plane I really want to fly; but even if it wasn't, I'd support it on the above grounds.

21 is a true icon, no way can we have a simulation of planes without it.. and this jewel is almost ready to pop and go out to be in our hands.. very important for that to happen..after that other modules follow.. i love the 21, and then as number increases i love them even more - mig-23,25,27,29,31.. ))

I'm quite excited with the premise of the MiG-21 on the Nevada map on the basis of the USAF's usage of them in the 70's/80's as an OPFOR simulator. Further, I'm interested in authoring a few scenarios from an early-80's perspective, with a balkanization of the USSR putting the player in the role of flying separatist Fishbeds up against Floggers (to underline what a disaster the latter was).

The MiG-21 offers an expansive number of creative options, the likes of which will be met with no other type. The next closest would be the legacy Hornet, and we'll be waiting at least through the year on that.

I love the MiG-21. I suppose it's because I grew up in the cold war, all the old school fighter jets fascinate me.

The Russian aircraft are a bit special though. I lived quite close to a few RAF bases as a kid and any time I wanted to see an F-4 or a BAC Lightning or a Bucc I only had to persuade my dad to drive me there so I could watch them take off and land. But the Mig's and Sukhoi's existed for me only as grainy black and white photos in books with a few lines of text underneath giving their estimated performance figures. They were mysterious :)

So I particularly want this MiG-21 to be released...

Hello new member here. Coming directly from mig21 dev site. Sorry if this is stupid question, but dev site says there is a release planed for March 30 and more info to follow on this forum. Though, when i click on the link i am led here and i get no authorized access message, even after i am logged in. Is this normal? Or, do i need some special account :/

Btw, hello to everyone.

Btw, hello to everyone.

Welcome to the forum Air_guinness. As Paganus wrote, the (DCS 3rd party) subsection you were linked to is temporarily closed.

The MiG-21Bis module is however still a go, and we're waiting patiently for announcements in this section of the forum.

I appreciate the little dabs of optimism that you've been sprinkling around the Internet.

I hope your work is going well and that everyone is still friends within the team.
