  2. Ukrainian biker Elena got took a ride through Chernobyl few years ago. She had Geiger counter and camera ready! There are 2 documentaries, "Ghost Town" and "Land of the wolves". I suggest reading both of them, it's a pretty good reading and it really made me think of the past, back to that particular period of my youth! 6. To be honest I have never ever seen a DVD box that warns you that a few minor bits will require you to read a few lines of text. Neither do they warn you that movie X might have a few scenes set in russia where road signs for authenticity and immersion are in proper Russian with Cyrillic letters and that you will therefore not immediately understand. Granted, there are a few occassions in the Deployment campaign where semi-relevant information is divulged during the mission in russian with subtitles - but I have only run into a single occassion where it is in any way mission critical. Thirdly, does anyone have a bleeding heart for those players who live in countries without a massively extensive english education programme, such as like the majority of the world? We all know quite a few users of this forum are limited to a somewhat rudimentary understanding of english, but somehow this does not seem to deplete their ability to fully enjoy the game. So while I can understand some amount of frustration at having to catch subtitles (I get hit by that too sometimes since my Russian is quite limited - enough to survive in russian hotels and restaurants and to tell clients that their equipment is "Nieto Charashov! Balshoi Katastrof!", which is embarrasing since their equipment is usually imported from my country...), I do think that it is a bit of over-reaction. Though it is ALSO an over-reaction to paste a derogatory picture against Americans, however alarming some of the educational statistics coming out of there is (like 55% of College Graduates surveyed by federal authorities being able to answer correctly to the question "how long does it take for the earth to go around the sun once?"), since I do not believe it is made clear that he is american or that his problem stems from the fact that he may be american. (Remember, the United States is probably the most multi-lingual country in the western world.) Please guys, just because someone makes a statement that you think is silly, don't bring forth prejudices however funny and classic the graphics associated is. Those fit humour threads, not serious ones.

  8. Lets chill chaps. He is entitled to a refund, the distance seller act (does that go as far as Russia?) says he does. I am sure ED will be more than happy to give him a refund, they aren't out to rob people. Althought quite why he posted instead of emailing I don't know. To Wombat, I think most people are just a little flabbergasted because it's like taking a cheap (but exceptionally made and good looking) car back because you don't like the colour of the floor mats. It's such a small part of an amazing game that if you would only give a chance you would probably enjoy. If it's something else that is causing you problems and your just blaming the VO then post it. Most people here would be more than happy to help you out. You probably don't realise but everyone playing this "game" is still a rookie and we are all still crashing. We are getting better, but it's a hard thing to learn and something even harder to master. And as I said before the Russian voice over is getting translated anyway. So other part of the game and when the translation is ready play the Deployment campaign.

  9. I currently use FreeTrack. I am considering the purchase of TrackIR, and I'll elaborate for you here, as it may be helpful to you. If you are a Do It Yourself kind of guy, FreeTrack can get the job done for you. You will be trading time and effort (to learn the ins and outs, and then make the stuff work) for the dollars you save by not buying a TrackIR. Only you can decide what you value more. If you do a search of these forums, you will also see folks make some strong points about supporting Natural Point (the makers of TIR) to help keep that sort of innovation going, etc. If you buy a TrackIR4 and a TrackClip Pro, you will have USB powered devices and software that should pretty much *just work* right out of the box. That is no minor consideration. With FreeTrack, you are going to need to come up with devices, and make them work. Many use a webcam, and then modify it as needed... which usually means removing the InfraRed filter, and installing a visible light filter (exposed film negative, or some floppy diskette media, for instance). With a webcam, you will typically see much lower frames per second of tracking, and it typically puts a performance hit upon your computer/game, since the CPU is doing a lot of processing of the camera's output. [The TrackIR does not impose a heavy processing load upon your CPU]. Alternatively, some of us use a Wiimote, as it has an IR camera built into it, and it does the bulk of the processing internally. It's load upon the CPU is probably close to that of the TrackIR (ie. minimal to none). The downsides of using a Wiimote are: 1. It is a Bluetooth connection. 2. It is battery powered. On the Bluetooth, the Wiimote is not a 'standard' device, and a bit of google searching will show you that not every Bluetooth stack will work with it. If you already have Bluetooth, you may find that you need to spend money on a new Bluetooth stack (software), such as BlueSoleil, in order to get the Wiimote working with FreeTrack. Furthermore, if you are like me, the extra steps of starting up the Bluetooth connection and then FreeTrack, before you even get to BlackShark (or whatever game/sim), gets old. As for the battery power, that can be remedied. You can either use rechargables, buy a Wiimote charger set (another form of rechargables), or get an adapter that runs off of a wall wart. ---------------- Then you get to the 'point model'. You can build your own, and make it battery powered, (or if you are brave, make it USB powered). Alternatively, you can buy a TrackClip Pro. The problem, apparently, with a Track Clip Pro for Wiimote/FreeTrack users is that a Wiimote works best with 950 nm IR LEDS, and the TrackClip Pro LEDS are running at some other wavelength. My FreeTrack works, but it has not been as smooth as the various head tracking videos you find on Youtube. ------------------------- [Opinion mode on] To answer your question... You don't have to buy a Track IR, as FreeTrack can get you there... but you will be happier *sooner* if you buy the TrackIR. Less muss, less fuss, and it is the head tracking standard that gets supported by game/sim authors more than any other. [Opinion mode off] As to how much a FreeTrack setup can save you, it depends upon what you already have, how handy you are, and what performance level you find acceptable. If you already have a suitable webcam that you can dedicate to the task, and some dead remotes laying around to scrounge IR LEDs out of (You'll want three), you can coble something up for very little additional immediate cost. Most likely, the head tracking frames per second will not be as high as the TIR's is. You may also be going through periodic battery changes unless you make your point model USB powered. If you want a head tracking FPS closer to what the TIR gets, then you are looking at using a Wiimote with the attendant Bluetooth rigamrole. Then you have even more battery changes, or the cost of a charger or wall wart powered battery substitute. If you don't already have the Bluetooth and a Bluetooth stack that will work with the Wiimote, then that is another potential expense. Best Regards,

  11. AI is pretty terrible really. I mean if I was humping through the bush and my mate exploded in a pink mist, I would probably not go "huh? oh well, keep walking, maybe it won't happen to me." Self-preservation instincts really shouldn't have to be programmed by mission editors, there should be default behaviours in the absence of specific orders.

  24. Rokosowsky, I think there something fundamental about military acquisitions, logistics and reality you do not understand. Of course everyone will agree with you that sending aircraft without proper ECM equipment against ANY enemy forces with SAM capabilities is far from being ideal. Regardless if the opposing forces are Chinese, NATO, Russian or what ever. I thing most of us, including moderators and developers, understood your point and, for the most part, even agreed with you. Sending these aircraft in areas covered by SAM is not ideal. It is not safe. You are right. Best course of action will always to keep the aircraft out of danger until the SAM threats can be neutralized. The reality is in fact (and that's especially the case during a military conflict) far from the ideal picture-book theory. Rules change and need to be flexible. Do aircraft without ECM equipment go into dangerous areas? I'm pretty sure they have to, because you don't always have any alternatives. There are some conflict areas where you would see Canadian helicopters with bullet holes patched with duct tape. That's not ideal. That's not safe, but it had to be done. In short, my point is that even if you do think that all modern military aircraft should be equipped with proper ECM equipment (and again, you are probably right), it doesn't change the reality that not all modern military aircraft have this luxury. Nor does it change the fact that they may be used in situations where SAM threats are possible. It all comes down to a question of budget, logistics, politics, ever lasting upgrade schedules, etc. That the life of military development. I'm not familiar with Russian programs, but I'm fairly sure that once an upgrade program starts, it could easily take a decade to see any changes on the aircraft. Nothing is plug-n-play in the military world. Changes are slow. Finally, I think you should take some time to review your attitude. You are clearly pulling out the smart ass act I've seen a bit too often around the internet by now. I'm sure it served you well in other situations, but here you are talking with a group of developers who, clearly, put a lot of effort into research and documentation. Their argument is simple. They basically said, "we do not have any information describing these systems for the Ka-50, hence we didn't model any". On a simulator where realism is the key, their approach is a valid one and hardly deniable because, to the best of their knowledge, it's right. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about this :s If you have serious information to provide, go ahead. But again, don't start babbling about this or that other aircraft that has the system or how much it would be nonsense to use the aircraft without it or even that it has been tested. All those facts that may be true or not do not provide any useful information on the state of the fleet of Ka-50 at any point in time. Even if you are right, the information you provide is not enough to conclude in the context of a realism-based simulator. EDIT: corrected few obvious typos

  25. How do you imagine such military operation and what role do you assign to helicopter? I suppose Ka-50 is designed for CAS. It means that standard mission for Ka-50 is not going deep into enemy territory, not SEAD and not even ground attack, because there are other aircrafts which can do these missions better. Air space should be cleaned by fighters, long range SAM killed by SEAD aircrafts and ground attacks (like convoys and fortifications) carried by Sturmoviks. Helicopters should be sticking near their own force providing air support. The main advantage of helicopter over ground attack jet is that helicopter can loiter in the area longer and can work with targets which are hard to spot and hard to kill for fast moving jets. The main threat for helicopters are MANPADS and short range SAMs. As other said, if you have been attacked by long range radar SAM, then you are where you are not supposed to be.

  26. Russia has many. Some have RWR and some do not. That one in the photo, flying combat operations in Georgia - in a real conventional war with real radar-guided SAM systems shooting back did not have a RWR. And neither does the Ka-50. Hello, reality. Hello, DCS.

  27. In A-10C most of HOTAS buttons have different functionality for so-called short and long presses. Short press is defined as less than 0.5 second. Otherwise it is long press.

  28. There are not enough buttons for everything even on the real F-16 stick so they are doubled or tripled. But unlike a stick such as the X52 there is no shift key. ;) So, what the buttons do depends the ammount of time you press them. 1 click they do one thing, pressing for 2 seconds it does some other command. Radar modes, MFD screens (as alternative to pushing OSD's?), etc etc are handled like this. I was debriefed in very general lines just as I am doing here. Dont ask for specifics, I dont know. I dont think there are any HOTAS profiles that work quite like this. We are used to instantaneous commands, weapons handling and radar handling responds differently, and not always instantly, I heard. Maybe pressing a button 2 seconds is the same ammount of time that a radar takes to change mode...in wich case makes perfect sense to assign buttons in such a way. For PC SIM's that do not simmulate this slow responsiveness, programmers dont assign keys like this in order to avoid unnecessary imput delays that would confuse the player. But then Im just speculating.
