  1. Russian plane of the fifth generation

  2. wooo, after days of fiddling, fighting with the heli, getting frustrated, reading/posting in forums etc. i decided to write this post and try to cover most of the things. i think i found a good setup to get started, my flying skills boosted up already (hovering, high speed low altitude, fast stopping without gaining too much height, stabilizing, aiming, fighting, landing on a ship, dive under bridges and cables, ;) ) (sorry for any bad english) in the beginning: 1. unpack your shiny mighty g940 ;) 2. download the current drivers from logitech (version 5.08 at the moment) 3. install them and plug in the monster. TAPE THE SENSOR AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE STICK! otherwise the deadman sensor will prevent the ffb-trim working correctly. 4. goto windows settings - gamecontrollers - recheck the calibration from the software setup 5. FORCE FEEDBACK Part1: also check the force feedback settings of the g940 joystick: my personal recommendation: - leave everything on 100% - uncheck the "center-spring" (maybe bad translated) 6. recheck the following files in the blackshark-directory, if you changed something for your former joystick/flightsystem/controller: root\Scripts\Aircrafts\_Common - FMOptions.lua HelicopterTrimmerZonePitch = 0.05; HelicopterTrimmerZoneRoll = 0.05; HelicopterTrimmerZoneRudder = 0.1; HelicopterTrimmerTauInverse = 7.0; root\Config - Producer.cfg ForceFeedbackEnabled = true; !!! 7. HANDLING: startup the Logitech Profiler. choose device -> g940 joystick choose game -> dcs black shark (this is logitechs default profile, didn't like it, deleted it for a new one) on the left side, all axis configurations for the joystick are listed (X, Y, MiniX, MiniY ...): left click - axis properties - HERE YOU SETUP YOUR PREFERED HANDLING OF EVERY AXIS OF THE STICK - NEVER TOUCH THE DEFAULT SETTINGS OF THE AXIS TUNE PANEL IN DCS:BLACK SHARK OPTIONS (like deadzone, curvature, saturation and stuff...) my recommendation: axis sensitivity - 0% (yes!) deadzone - 0% range - 100% for the beginning, apply these settings to every! axis of all devices (throttle and pedals too), the result will be a very precise handling experience. but you can come back later anytime and make your own setting. EVEN DURING FLIGHT YOU CAN ALT-TAB SWITCH TO THE PROFILER AND ADJUST YOUR SETTINGS AND KEYBINDINGS! (thats cool...) recommendation for the right throttle-axis, check -> invert, a helo-collective is pulled in reality... if you are already firm with the keystrokes you want to assign to the joystick buttons - hack them in... examples: - T for trim on the stickbutton S4 - SPACE for firing the cannon on the trigger - RIGHT-ALT + SPACE for missiles/ rockets/ bombs on the red colored fire-button OOOPS! in version 5.08 of the profiler, there maybe a bug with recording the RIGHT-ALT + SPACE combination. somehow a CTRL-key is also recorded, no problem. simply export the current profile to an xml-file. open it with a texteditor (like notepad), search for the command table containing: Name="Keystroke LCTRL + ALT GR + SPACE" (may differ depending on your localization, had to translate this from german) in this table look for: <Event Type="Key" Keyname="LCTRL" Up="false" KeynameUndo="LCTRL" /> delete it, rename the name of the table from Name="Keystroke LCTRL + ALT GR + SPACE" to Name="Keystroke ALT GR + SPACE". save and re-import it to the profiler. 8. START BLACK SHARK: go to options - controls. check if there are any actions configured with the g940 buttons. if so, delete them all, use the logitech-profiler for all bindings to the buttons of the flightsystem. after cleaning all up, there should be only the keyboard-bindings left (i recommend leaving the default keyboard-bindings untouched, furthermore, i deleted everything of the arcade-mode, including keyboard-bindings). next, go to options - controls - AXIS COMMANDS. if there are any settings on the 3 g940 devices, delete them. now add: g940 joystick - cyclic pitch JOY Y - cyclic roll JOY X g940 pedals - rudder JOY RZ - wheel brake JOY Y (also add JOY X if you like) g940 throttle - first: REMOVE THE LINK BETWEEN THE LEFT & RIGHT THROTTLE on the device - then bind collective JOY X (THE RIGHT THROTTLE) after that reconnect them or bind another action to the left throttle if you don't want to use them together. 9. FORCE FEEDBACK Part2 now click on FF TUNE. to start with something, i recommend TRIMMER FORCE = 50, SHAKE seems to have no effect at all (i never felt an impact changing that setting). ok, thats enough for a flight test. (don't forget the trimmer binding in the logi-profiler) 10. start a mission or create an empty scenario for basic flight testing. now take off and check it out. you can always pause and alt-tab to the profiler and adjust the axis settings and button bindings. have fun and good luck! :pilotfly: i hope i didn't forget something... feel free to post your own tips & tricks. ps: thanks a lot to all the forum members who helped me finding these settings. edit 25.october'09: i highly recommend these posts: - for handling, sensitivity, ffb settings... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=45809 - a basic flight/combat logiprofiler-setup: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=763179&postcount=28 (but for german version of BS and logi-profiler!) - first mod for the throttle LED's: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=45895 made a picture with the working version of morg's g940led tool: i used amber for standby/off/inactive, green for active and red for special (AP Ammo, Landinggear). as you can see the LED's are displaying that i'm hovering, in target tracking mode, landinggear retracted, moving ground target and turn to target activated, using HE cannon rounds. update august 2010: - please use the new logitech 5.09 driver - update the firmware of the G940 - check this post: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=954388&postcount=118

  6. Hey guys. Just delivering a few ideas for ED's consideration in a future DCS module. It apears computing is more and more off loaded to the GPU. A few months ago we watched a military SIM use 200 GPU's using them for object physiscs and management. A few days ago NVIDIA announced the FERMI architecture further suporting programing languages and capabilities on the GPU with 512 CUDA cores. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/video/nvidia-officially-unveils-generation-cuda-gpu-architecture-codenamed-fermi/ ATI followed NVIDIA on the CUDA and Phys front, there are reasons to beleive they will also going to compete with FERMI in the future somehow. 512 cores worth of processing power is too much to ignore. It blows any CPU out of the watter. It would be nice for immersion to see sky scrapers on cities and traffic, thousands of units, infantry etc, aside along with AFM for all aircraft. All of it would be possible. Is this in ED's reach in the comming years?

  11. No - The Shkval locks Aerial Targets with relative ease, even from Max Range of Vikhrs and Beyond......You'll only have problems if the Bandit gets into the Weeds - obviously gets more difficult. Difficulty often arises in attempting to 'Chase' the Bandit with the Tracking Gate in an attempt to obtain lock. Don't do this. Anticipate the Bandit's Flight Path and wait for him. Once he crosses the Gate, Lock him up - should obtain Lock no bother. The problem then lies in keeping lock. As soon as the LWR starts shouting, you can bet he's headed for the trenches. Once there, losing lock is relatively easy. Helps to launch a Vikhr at him and lock him up moments before Impact. That way he barely has time to contemplate the warning before he gets sent on his way..........:gun_sniper:

  12. Think of this... Shkval is an Optical Sensor. Which aircraft relies on Optical Sensor to acquire airborne targets? NONE Ka-50 is a ground attack helicopter, like most of attack helos! The Shkval is sufficient for ground attacks but is lacking for aerial combat. Even the AH-64 which may carry 2 Stinger missiles has an IR sensor in order to acquire airborne targets and still the Apache is considered a ground attack helicopter(or at least that its main role). In case you meet another helo you have a chance to lock it at some distance(which is quite difficult) and fire a Vikhr missile... which isn't a fire and forget missile and requires constant LOS to the target till impact. At close range I think that things are a lot easier! Switch your cannon to Manual Mode(?) which fires straight ahead and go for a typical WWII dogfight!!! Don't underestimate your cannon... Even a Mi 24 Hind is an easy prey for it! You may want to switch to slow firing rate to save ammo since a couple of hits can blast a helo out of the sky. JUST INFO : While the idea of Ka-50 to be equipped with only an Optical Sensor seems somewhat "old-fashioned" compared to AH-64D Longbow Radar(which increases the Apache's target acquiring/engaging capabilities way further) I found this on the net http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/1997/04/30/2309/kamov-flies-modified-ka-50.html According to it(article dating since 1997) the Ka-50N (the new variant of Ka-50) is equipped with a FLIR pod(thus making the use of IR AA/AG missiles possible) and Kamov is intending to equip Ka-50 with a Radar sensor (the Arbalet... which means Crossbow!). Lets just hope that this variant is under production and ED will implement it!

  13. If you can, get to a hover to lock up the target, makes it alot easier... Otherwise flying directly towards the target will make it easier to lock up... Use your HMS to point the shkval in the rough position then manually slew to target from there.. Can be difficult here chasing the bandit with the shkval... :P Zooming out on the shkval will give you a faster slew too.. So use this if you can't catch that speeding heli..:smilewink: Overall it is a tough gig...:joystick:

  14. It's very difficult the KA-50 was NOT meant for air to air situations obviously, switch the Schval to A/A mode and pray hehe. It really just takes practice...best bet is to avoid them all together. Most choppers you come up against have a seperate gunner and boy does that make their lives much easier for the pilots.

  17. remember mine is really over engineered, you could do exactly the same thing with wood, and it would probably be more effective. Just an idea.

  18. My pleasure, John. :) The AMD and Intel debate is in a high state of flux, but right now the easiest description of the state of affairs is that Intel is more powerful while AMD is cheaper. If money is an object you could check out AMD but I myself is sticking with Intel for now. I definitely know what you mean with graphics card sizes though - I myself simply bought one of the biggest computer cases around (The CoolerMaster 932 HAF fulltower) to solve the issue. :P It's not quite a matter of just more cores = more performance. Usually it would be, but that is application dependant. For example, a 4-core system running at 3GHz will have more computation power than a 2-core system at 4GHz (like mine, see signature), but it's not all applications that can actually take advantage of that. To take advantage of multiple cores an application needs to be programmed for it - the technique is called multithreading where the process is split into multiple jobs, and the various cores are basically given their own tasks. An example of how it can look is the design of the Rise of Flight WW1 simulator recently released, where on a two-core system it'll assign one core to work on physics and another to work on AI and such. DCS is currently not multithreaded, though, so for that application my overclocked E8500 will outperform a stock Qxxxx chip even if the latter has more total computation power on paper, simply because the application only runs in a single "thread". It's a common request for ED to make DCS multithreaded, but this is an absolutely massive job for them to do and I would not expect it at least within the next year or two. So for DCS the main thing you'd use to gauge processor power is the clock rate - higher is better. This is however a truth with some modification, since different processor types will do different amounts of work on each clock, but that gets really complex. You could say that an i7 running at 3GHz will outperform an E8400 at the same clock speed, but not by much. At that point the other components in the system become more important. Note that this is for DCS:BS specifically; for general use that i7 would blow the E8400 out of the water. :P However, having more cores will add advantages in that the OS can place other jobs on "free" cores - like itself. :P So if you want to run many background jobs at the same times having those extra two cores of a quad system would help, but it won't affect total maximum performance. When it comes to the motherboard, I would say that this is a component you should absolutely not be cheap on. It's the core of the system. If money is an object I'd say purchase a quality motherboard and save on RAM, CPU, HDD capacity and such. Those are easier to switch in the future. I would also recommend getting a motherboard that is geared towards overclocking, since that can offer very cheap performance upgrades later. I am personally very happy with the XFX 780i motherboard I use (it also has three PCIe slots), and it was pretty cheap. However, it is limited to DDR2 memory so if I built the system today I would probably have gone for a similar board but with DDR3 support. As you can see in my signature though, it has served me well and allowed me to do a lot of very nice stuff with cheap components. So I'd say your course of action would be this: Decide on a processor. If money is an object, check out AMD. Otherwise Intel. Read some comparative reviews on the net. Find a couple candidate motherboards for your selected processor (doublechecking sockets is extremely important here, especially since Intel currently has three sockets in use), and repeat the review-reading cycle. Then select RAM if you cannot use the RAM you already have. Then consider the future. For example, if you expect to keep the system on an upgrading schedule for several years, socket 775 systems like mine (Exxxx and Qxxxx) aren't necessarily the best. I suspect it'll be phased out pretty soon, though I haven't seen a schedule with anything definite on that yet. On the clock speeds of processors, there is one further thing to consider: overclocking. If you are open to the idea of overclocking you can get a lower-clock processor and run it at speeds above and beyond it's higher-price siblings (like I do, my E8500 is 3.16GHz in stock, I run it at 4GHz, the E8600 is 3.3GHz stock). This is a reasonably safe operation to do if you've done homework, and part of the point about never skimping on the motherboard is due to this. You might not be intending to overclock right away, but it can be a nice option to have for the future in case you, some day down the line, find yourself wanting more performance but don't have the money to spend. --- Oh, and one thing I almost forgot: Vista. Use it. It has multicore support built-in from the start, which XP doesn't, which means Vista is a lot better at handling the hardware we give the OS to work with nowadays - especially since we're starting to see 6- and 8-core prototypes where this will become even more important. :P

  25. Just to do a simple thing like when a player enters a zone acction 1 will hapen.. well its simple if u have only one player but if u have 4 or 8.. geeeezuz u have to make triggers for each player instead of just one witch would sense if player1 or player 2 or player 3 etc.. enters zone then acction 1 will hapen so we really need some Bolean operators to make triggers less daunting to do!
