  2. Hey there. I've received numerous requests to make additional videos about DCS A-10 since the multiple JDAM drop video. I enjoy making these. Feel free to suggest what topic you would like covered next. Gonna consolidate these into a master list of vids. As of now, there are 4 "main" ones, with the Targeting Pod guide being the latest: The above video describes how to range targets and create more accurate markpoints with the targeting pod. I made this fairly (as study sims go) newbie-friendly vid to show how to land. Part 1 is a basic VFR approach from the pattern; Part 2 has a crosswind landing and missed approach + additional info on crab angle calculation. I have introduced my personal preferences into the procedures very slightly, so I'm sure it'll deviate from the official Landing training mission. But, this is how I usually do it. I am not going to get particularly hardcore in the landing series of vids, because they're meant to be a starting point to practice and not an encyclopedic repository of pitch-perfect landings. Lately I've been experimenting with the trim system and MRFCS, and so I made a video about that. There was some confusion in the openbeta forum about how these systems work. It's also motivated by my desire not to end up in the state of confusion that I (and many others) were in about Black Shark's trimmer. I went into the A-10A manual that's linked in the "A-10 documentation" thread, read up on the trim/MRFCS topics in that, and then compared it to the functionality in the beta. The result was that it works as described in that document. Which is very cool. Please note that since the MFRCS is still a WIP item, I'm not going to do part 2 until there's either a good way to portray it as WIP, or until it's finished. The original JDAM video; shows the user how to launch multiple JDAMS and explains how the markpoint system can be used to input new navigation waypoints for flight plans. _______________________ I'll annotate any technical errors people find.

  3. I think this deserves a new thread of it's own, it was getting mixed up and buried within the Buildings mod discussion :D I present to you all a whole bunch of new road textures for FC2.0 (and DCS Black Shark) Road Textures Black v2.0 Semi-Markings *High Resolution* This mod replaces all default road textures with semi-marked, dirtied, black tarmac ones. IMPORTANT: Please be aware that this version features very high resolution texturesets, they range from 2048x2048 for the road junctions, to 2048x8192 for the longer lengths of road, so a good PC specification IS required! Anisotropic Filtering level of 8x or more recommended for best results. 4GB+ of system RAM recommended. http://files.lockon.ru/en/454/ Road Textures Black Semi-Markings v2 New Road textures, v2.0 Semi Road Markings Replaces the default road textures with tarmac ones, road markings are only drawn on main roads (see thumbnail screenshots) This version features texture resolutions ranging from 512x512 to 512x2048, so most PC's can run this mod with no noticeable FPS loss or resource usage. Anisotropic Filtering level of 8x or more recommended for best results. Now MODMAN 7.3.0.0 compatible. http://files.lockon.ru/en/449/ Road Textures Black v2.0 *High Resolution* Full Markings This mod replaces all default road textures with fully marked, black tarmac ones. 4. My Cougar knows its time is up. Every time i unplug the damn thing i have to wipe the firmware when i plug it back in. Its like when you are breaking up with someone and they just get more annoying towards the end. As if thats going to make you come back. Sorry Dear Cougar We had some great times together. You weren't my first. But you taught me things that my Saitek Evo never dreamed of. I became a right handed flyer for you. But there is another. She has more buttons, And a chinese hat. Her throttle splits, Her baseplate is flat. Goodbye ps. And you can take your centre slop as well, its taking up room

  6. Edit: New Profile Here is my profile: It contains most of the common tasks you would want to say over the radio. Download and save the It has combined commands for quick, realistic radio commands. As well as single radio commands for when you are learning the radio structure or for more detailed instructions (E.g attack artillery at my SPI with missile from the north) In VAC Builder, click File, Import, VAC Profile (xml) and browse to the You then have to load the imported profile with File, Load. If you don't have vac system there is a 30 - day trial period and it is only £11.30 ($18) to buy Money well spent I think for all the use I have gotten out of it. http://www.dwvac.com/ I love actually speaking to the JTAC!

  7. Using the full Mission Editor is really very easy. Here's a quick walk-through. - Open the mission editor and press the "New" icon in the upper left corner. - Select the Nevada Theater - Set coalitions if necessary and prompted - (Optional) Set time of day in the Briefing page, using the clipboard icon near the top of the left sidebar. - (Optional) Set weather conditions in the Weather page, using the Cloud/sun icon on the left sidebar. To add an aircraft: - Click the aircraft silhouette button. In the right-hand pane that appears: - Select the country and unit type. (A-10C) - Set the skill level to "Player." - Add waypoints by clicking on the map. Edit the points using the "Add, Edit, Delete" buttons in the right hand pane. - Set the first waypoint (1 of 1) to be of type "Takeoff From Runway." It should snap the aircraft to the nearest runway. - Change the aircraft loadout using the bomb silhouette button half-way down the right-hand pane. Save and fly. You can add ground units to tear up the same way you added the A-10.

And there's no final manual either so it's the best time now to discuss these matters. It also happens that Frederf is knowledgeable enough to be able to come up with correct and yet very condensed definitions.

  23. Yes, there is much to read, whether be it on the forum or in the manual, where does the difference lie? ;) As to your question, the DSMS sub-chapter of the MFCD chapter is where you find all the info. The weapons employment chapter to the end of the manual is a more practical approach that leaves some of the more advanced functionality aside.

  25. Its systems detail that I like so was impressed by the things that I didn't expect to work, such as: - Cross gate working - in a dive or climb with the gate open, seeing fuel flow into the lower tank - Engine windmilling in flight with fan speed shown on fan speed dial. Fan speed will increase in a dive (ie with an increase in IAS) - Emergency flap retract works slowly when stationary on ground but quicker in flight due to aerodynamic forces - Flight seems more 'squirrely' with pitch and trim SAS turned off - Yaw trim control working as advertised (although its not enough to control the yaw produced by an engine out)

  27. What nscode said. If you bomb along the length of the runway then if you are lucky all the bombs hit. But if you are unlucky and a little to one side or the other then they all miss. To be sure of a hit you drop a stick of bombs across the runway with the gap between bombs less than the width of the runway and try to put the middle of the stick on the target. Ideally they should have attacked at more of an angle to be sure. There might have been nearby terrain or defences that affected that decision. Years ago, I posted something about dropping sticks of bombs that is kind of relevant, here it is again. Automatic multiple bomb release or "ripple". Why do ground attack aircraft like the A-10 have an automatic system to drop a ripple of bombs, why not just let the pilot press the weapon release several times? To answer this question, you need to think about a real life target attack. A single dumb bomb dropped from an aircraft does not drop perfectly down onto the target every time. It may drift left or right of the track that the aircraft is flying and miss the target. If the bomb is dropped a little early or a little late then it will miss short or long. The likelyhood of missing short or long is more than missing left/right. Imagine an aircraft flying at 500 kts = 6078ft * 500 = 3039000 ft/hr. Divide by 60*60 gives ft/sec = approx 850. If the pilot initiates bomb release 0.5s early or late he will likely miss by over 400ft. So lets make our bomb "longer" by dropping a ripple of (eg) five bombs. If we know the lethal radius of the bomb blast is eg. 50ft, then if we drop them 100 feet apart, we have now a "longer bomb" with a lethal area of 100ft wide by 500ft long. If we aim to land the middle (3rd) bomb of the stick of 5 on the target, then we have 250ft of leeway short and long and still destroy the target. This deals effectively with the short / long problem, but we still might miss left / right. If we are attacking a small point target like a truck, then nothing we can do, but if our target is of significant dimensions like a bridge or runway, we can increase our hit chances. Suppose our target is a river bridge that is 500 feet long and 50 feet wide. If we attack along the length of the bridge we might be lucky and all 5 bombs hit it, or we might be unlucky and all of them miss left or right, then all that happens is the bridge gets a bit wet! If we attack at 90 degress to the bridge then our bomb to bomb gap is 100 ft and the bridge 50ft wide, 50/50 chance of a hit. If we attack at an angle of 30 degrees, then simple maths tells us that bridge "appears" to be 100ft wide and we are certain one bomb will hit provided we can put the ripple on target regarding short/long. The more bombs in our stick then the better our chances of getting it right as regards short/long.

  34. You assume incorrectly. It's not not written for experts, beginners, or anyone. It's an awkward attempt to explain concepts in the most round-about method possible. The energy management section neither belongs in the "basics of flight" section, nor does it deserve to be wholesale copy-pasted from a fighter pilot's twitter account. If that isn't the most backward, unnecessarily confusing, disjointed paragraph on the subject you've ever read. Then I'm at a loss. Compare that to something I can whip up on the spot: First of all, the ED-written paragraph rarely makes use of the actual definitions of various terms which is a big faux pax when it comes to technical writing. Also, who the heck refers to "air density increasing as altitude is decreased?!?!" Any sane explanation takes the conditions where CAS and TAS are the same and explains why they diverge. The first five sentences are a complete distracting preamble to the actual point. "TAS automatically compensates..." the heck it does! TAS is the truth. Everything else is an approximation or an error. Clearly the writer is capable of being straightforward and correct, "Ground Speed (GS) is the aircraft's actual speed across the earth." Although Earth is a proper noun. However the title mentions "TAS and IAS" which means that GS should not be present in the conversation as it is not related to the relationship between TAS and IAS at all. Also, thanks for introducing "wind factor" without necessity or actually explaining what it is. You can see in as many if not less words someone could cover the topic in a more complete, correct, and straightforward manner than the manual attempts to.

  39. To Original Poster: You definitely have a chance, after all, this is a sim and you do not to be physically fit or have any special training to use it. It is more a matter of personal interest, time investment and desire to have fun. I guess I will take a position of devil's advocate here, given that the community ever since first release of the DCS series has turned to become more "hardcore" together with the sim itself. But it is in my deep belief that you have to learn to crawl before you can consider walking and especially running. So throw the manual into some deep shelf for a while and start... having fun :) First thing I would recommend doing is having all the sliders to the most "unrealistic" (arcade) mode and start messing around. Forget about cold start, begin from runway with engines running, or even better, in the air. Fly, do some wicked aerobatics, crashland, etc, etc. In process you will be learning basic principles of flight, behavior of the aircraft. You will be amazed how much things can you learn by just "doing" stuff in easy mode, without glancing in the book, using just common sense and instincts. At the same time you will probably have good time without sleepless nights spent reading and thinking "I will never understand all of that". Over the time, however, if you will still be interested in sim, messing around will get eventually boring and you will start wondering how this or that aspect is "properly" done in real live. That's where RTFMing will come in. But at this point you will have a lot of practical experience in basics of the simulation, so most of the things will start to make good sense by the first time you read about them. And about final piece of advice. When you study something - don't attempt to memorize some procedure by heart - the most important thing is to understand the principle. For instance when you will be in position to learn how to land the plane in fully realistic mode, don't try to memorize required speeds, limitations ,when you have to deploy flaps and gear, etc.. Rather have a look at the procedure in general, remember your experiences from messing around and think for a minute "does this make sense based on what I have done before and why?" If what's written does make sense in general, you now have overall understanding how to do it properly. Practice some more, to land better. Eventually you will see that what you are doing is very close to the real world, maybe with some slight deviations which do not contradict "proper way". After that it is all about fine tuning. I hope it makes some sense to you what I've written here. All I can say now is - Good Luck :) P.S. I would expect a bit of flaming on this post, but I really don't give a damn ;) Afterall, it's just one of the options for Original Poster.

  41. The whole notion of supply has been missing for quite some time. I was hoping there might have been a trigger condition based on weapon usage in DCS A-10. That way we could at least fake supply with triggers. The fact that you can use whatever the hell you want however much you want is a huge factor in how people play a game. Give 1 person 4 aircraft, if they lose the first 3, the value of the 4th aircraft would increase an insane amount. They'd fly more careful and smarter. Granted they might also quit the server...

A real pilot see on visual approach if he is right on the approach, i fly always visual since FS2004,FSX,Lock ON, IL-2 and outer sim Space Shuttle and Apollo in Orbiter. And i am ex real pilot. The HSI did not match the runway heading. The HUD is not a primary flight instrument. First of all in real live we select flaps first notch 90° of the runway on Downwind (start stop watch until 45 second check positions) 45° behind the runway gear down also. Time 1 min elapse turn base then finel. Finel Flaps full. [if you fly on downwind you can check also VASI to use as a referenc if you see 1 white 3 red then turn from downind to base but maintain 1000 feet AGL then on base you can descend] a good pilot is always in training Thomas

I wonder if it's disinterest in the aircraft (other than the weapons systems), that the size of the manual is intimidating, or that "reading is for #*($^ nerds, dude". I wonder if after the scope of the sim is realized by some they will be forced to read the manual, or if they will seek a solution through :clicky:clicky:boggle:post. Aren't people interesting!? I passed the NATOPS test in Naval Aviation, and I may have to reread parts of this manual. I can't imagine trying to wing it. (Hmmm.. is this where that term comes from?)
