  3. I think it's fair to say that the level of complexity of a whole WW1 aeroplane to a contemporary HSI (horizontal situation indicator) :D I'm stuck here... I used to describe some companies as 'privacy whores' and now I don't know how to call EA  Just kidding ;) What I am trying to say here is that the detailed list of changes has to be posted. The one from the press release is to vague. Especially for those who participated in the 'outstanding bugs thread'.

  4. I do not mind 20$ for having DCS Ka-50 upgraded to latest DCS engine version. Such engine upgrade is worth these 20$. I do not understand Eagle Dynamics software releases though and the way we must install them. It is so annoying. Why not release a base DCS package that is core engine and allows only to play and observe AIs, and release theaters and flyable aircraft or whatever as add on packages. Release the core engine with an auto-patcher/troubleshooter that keeps tracks of all the file versions and file/folder structure while allowing mods to be selected from separate custom folder tree, while keeping everything simple to one install folder and one UI! Saves us end-users disc space lots of trouble tweaking each DCS sim independently.

  5. Ok here goes: I had a wild idea today to take my motorcycle helmet and build a bracket so my 23" flat screen could attach to it. This way when I look around, I always see the image. I taped my trackIR clip to the front. I fired up Blackshark and couldn't play more then 3-4 minutes without getting sick to my stomach!! Has anyone else tried anything like this?? I would like to have a helmet or VR glasses that done this but I can't find a commercial one with a decent resolution.... Update: 11/8/11 VIDEO HERE: .

  11. So I just played this mission for the first time the other day. I did not catch the name of the mission at first and I was worried I would not be able to find it later. SO glad I found this mission. Simply put, this is the best mission I have played yet. This is exactly the mission I have been looking for as this is how I imagine A-10's are used in combat lately, or at least close enough. The voicework, the scripting, the teamwork required is just top notch. Now I have to check out all your missions. Good job man.

  12. A good aftermarket CPU cooler and reasonable case cooling is in order. There are several different brands for CPU HSF that do a great job and will not break the bank. Coolermaster and Zalman make excellent heat pipe design HSFs. For good all in one water cooling I recommend the Corsair H70 although really probably overkill as the above air coolers come very close to cooling just as well at all but the most extreme overclocks. The importance of air flow over the components through the case should also be considered. It is a much overlooked but important aspect of the build. Hopefully you have a well designed case with adequate fans for cooling it. Out

  14. You can't just close a thread without letting everyone know! ED promised this thread would remain open and now they just want to close it? I guess we'll have to pay $2 for each thread we want closed from now on!? I guess the whole idea of forums is done for now, I'm going back to a BBS. This thread is basically the same as the original Black Shark released thread, nothing new other than Viper's avatar anyway.

  16. I am attempting to purchase a full version of BlackShark 2 but I am not able to get the purchase completed. The message I am getting back is the following: Sage Pay returned an INVALID status. The data sent was Invalid because "3138 : The BillingState format is invalid." I was able to purchase DCS A-10C Warhog without any issues but I am being blocked for some reason trying to purchase BlackShark 2. I have placed a new ticket #9460 on the web sight under User Support. Any help would be appreciated. spn

  18. The video was very funny. Thanks for posting it PeterP. The reason for my post is the ill-fated and ever-resurfacing "realism" discussion. No one waits 3 hours for their plane to be refueled or rearmed, no one performs 30 minute long start-up sequences, no one buys another license after their pilot is dead, hence the acrid tone from my words. No ill intended on your person or on Viper's. You both have been resourceful and trustworthily obliging. I did the test and this is what I got: Black Shark 1: Black Shark 2: These are the cropped images to show that the exact same problem occurs even when using the ALT-F1 view. Black Shark 1: Black Shark 2: I've also tested with and without TrackIR. The result is always the same: Shifting one's view does not reset the squished/stretched aspect of the object in the Shkval and even if it did, the inferior limit to your head movement would block you from doing so. I also did a video illustrating it. I could post it as well. This is another little test I did to show what happens in real life when you move the point of view of a camera to some strangely oblique angles: (The yellow paper strip is showing where the azimuth line on the Shkval screen is) This was taken to simulate an object locked while the pilot looks at the Shkval at a perpendicular angle: The next two shots show what happens when the view is shifted upwards to a very oblique angle. Photographically speaking, this effect is very easily noticed, but in real life it is almost imperceptible. Peripheral vision plays an incredibly important role in assisting with perspective deformation. Just like PeterP anecdotally commented, our hands don't get reshaped into weird forms just because we move them farther away or closer to our eyes. It's also due noting that for this level of deformation to occur, I had to take the picture at a very oblique angle, and that's not the case in real life from the pilot's perspective while seated in the cockpit. Now comparing the real life findings with the game ones in an animation we have the following: What's happening is that they've implemented one optical rule to the pilot's eye which influences the whole world around him, except for what's projected on the TV screen. That's why the objects (world) shrinks well under the Shkval azimuth line when - as the real-life illustration shows - it should have remained unaltered. You can't have one optical rule governing the pilot's eye and another one to determine what happens to the TV-screen-projected image. Whatever deformation we have on the TV screen must also be applied to its whole extension and the units cannot be shrunk under the TV screen overlay. Whatever happens to the projected image must also happen to the TV screen itself. Another fact to take note of is the inability to undo the perspective distortion once one lowers his head in the cockpit. Those are my findings. ================================================ EDIT: Something else that's also interesting to note is that the same level of optical distortion is not applied to the entire cockpit. This is the little experiment I did: I tried to position the camera close the oblique angle I had to put it previously to recreate the distortion level I showed in the Shkval and this is what I got: Left panel. Camera perpendicular to the monitor: Left panel. Camera in the position I used to recreate the distortion level exhibited in the Shkval: Animation of the distortion that should be seen had the optical model used on the Shkval distortion been used in the whole world around us: On a side note I'd like to explain that I did not crop the image so to illustrate how obliquely far one must look to get the same distortion level shown in the Shkval image. Right panel. Camera in a perpendicular position to the monitor: Right panel. Camera in the position I used to recreate the distortion level exhibited in the Shkval: Animation of the distortion that should be seen had the optical model used on the Shkval distortion been used in the whole world around us: I hope this post could show how little distorted our eyes see the world in real life. Again, distorting an image photographically is a simple matter of repositioning the camera's POV, but in real life the effect is barely noticeable if noticeable at all. I think the simplistic model implemented in the Shkval could use some tweaking, since it's only interfering with the Shkval image and not the whole world around us. I hope this contribution comes to a valid point.

  19. Hmm, not really, no reason why the engine features cant be expanded or adjusted with each vehicle release, IMO it would make much more sense for all vehicles to run in the same engine version with engine upgrades coming free to existing users, this model is used by lots of other games and applications out there. IMO this sim is very inexpensive really I think a much higher purchase price for each combat platform would be justified, 100 USD doesn't seem unreasonable .... but charging us for a patch, no matter how wonderful it is and no matter how cheap it is, seems abit much really. I look at the bug reports trickling in regarding BS2 and I wonder will I have to pay again to have them fixed? S!

  20. Not wanting to insult your intelligence, but you are assigning the Collective aren't you? Not the Throttle? It was a mistake I made when I very first installed BS1, and I know other people made the same mistake who were new to BS. Also, just read in another thread that people are finding they have to move the relevant axis in both directions to be fully recognised and accepted in BS2. Try deleting the assignment, then re-assign and move the axis in both directions the full range several times.

  21. I presume that with all this hard work on moving the FC to DCS:BS standard, it would require much less effort now to do an FC3? Just guessing, but perhaps a lot of people would prefer flying those fighters compared to the Ka-50 till the next module is done. And the improvements in ME, graphics and AI would be very welcome.

  22. ED need to rethink and redo its project management. Then, all the process of patching and upgrading will be much easier. When DCS went public, I was also under strong impression that there will be ONE DCS, and that ANY AND ALL following aircraft will be addon modules. Sadly, when WH come out, what could be read between the lines now became obvious. From the standpoint of end-user it is very hard to follow any such development. As for FC2 - I consider it to be total waste of developers time. Why? Well, apart from net compatibility, nothing much has been changed. Again, speaking as regular - nonprofit and noncleric - end-user. What was invested into it could be invested into something... well... fully operational? BS2? Well, I'm not interested into A-10, and had no time to fly and enjoy Ka-50 properly. And for Ka-50, I already have what I need. Few minor improvements and graphical buffs will not help me fly better. Although, a dynamical campaign could be helpful ;)

  23. Sounds good in theory, but I get the impression that the code changes required for compatibility are actually inseparable from the issues which made the update so time-consuming and difficult that ED was forced to charge money for it. So it was either a paid upgrade or nothing at all, although like you I can see how it rankles from the consumer's point of view as such problems aren't their fault and communication was lacking. Suffice it to say that, going by E-B's post on ED's future plans, they are also unhappy with the current state of affairs and do not wish to repeat this model if they can help it. I hope they succeed in that endeavour.

  24. Well done ED. A little dissapointed to be frank that what was essentially a tested patch has been released as a seperate product rebranded as Blackshark 2. Hmmm...... oh well, modern economic times i spose means that even now we pay for patches? To be frank, i`m sort of playing devils advocate to so much speculation and controversy about BS2. Fact is, i`ll buy it, will continue to and actually would pay 3 times the amount. There isn't a FM that exists that has the acccuracy and diligence in a product. fairplay. 'T'

  25. When you click the server name, it'll show mission information in the box below the server list. Most servers operating under that model keep their TS info there. I've flown tonnes of formation with that kind of ping without problem. It's not really the ping that is at issue there (as long as formation lead knows what he is doing), but packetloss can cause a lot of "warping" with ensuing fireballs.

  27. Have a solution, worked for me (tested yesterday online, no issue and every personal config retained): 1. Rename BS1 vers. 1.02 folder. 2. Uninstall BS1 (won't touch your renamed folder); 3. Install BS1 vers. 1.00 in the same old position; 4. Install BS2. 5. Delete BS1 vers. 1.00 folder and rename the BS1.02 backup folder as before. Give a try, maybe... but I can't guarantee: too many possible unknow issues ;)

  29. I had no problem spending the $20.00 for this upgrade. I have used these products before without a problem either in the install or running the software. I was a bit miffed when it didn't work after I had paid for it. But I can understand how things can get overlooked. What I can't for the life of me understand is now that ED is aware of this issue nothing is posted on the download page to let people know that 1. They have to do a work around to make it work involving more installing and time consuming efforts to make this work or 2. Wait for the fix to come out. So the same installer which don't work out of the gate is still posted on the FTP for others to be upset about and when they find out that it don't work they like me had to spend more time sifting thru how many pages on the forum to find out how to get a work around and then spend the time performing the work around. How about ED putting some type of warning up there or pulling the installer until it is correct. It is only the right thing to do.

  30. In order: Downloaded DCS Black Shark from Direct2Drive.com Installed DCS Black Shark version 1.0. Attempted to run the Black Shark 2 exe; no joy "DCS BlackShark must be installed" I then ran Black Shark version 1.0; exited and ran Black Shark 2 exe and same issue. From what I've read BlackShark 2 only installs if version 1.0 of Black Shark is on your computer. Guess I will have to continue to wait :music_whistling:

  33. Just did. HDR and Shadows disabled. Restarte the Shooting Range. On approach and quickstop, my stupid wing man clipped me, busting his rotors. As he impacted the ground, BS2 crashed again. However, one round earlier (to confirm it's still crashing with HDR and Shadows on), I was able to hit a car with a missle from a distance, and it exploded fine. It was only after getting up close and hitting it with the gun that, when it exploded, BS2 crashed. So it doesn't seem be caused by HDR or Shadows. Everytime I'm close to something exploding, BS2 crashes :(
