  1. Please be aware that the flares will only work against heat-seeking missiles. You have no indication of their launch except the two Mk1 eyeballs in the cockpit. It's the same deal with radar guided missiles. Seeing as how the best strategy should have you down in the weeds, putting yourself on the opposite side of something large and dense (such as a hill) from the missile is your best bet. Failing that, you have the right idea by diving and turning when you detect a launch. All you can do is attempt to over-g the missile or break lock by developing a high angular velocity relative to it. However, you should turn TOWARDS the missile, not away from it. The helicopter is not maneuverable nor fast enough to evade SAMs like fixed-wing aircraft do. If someone more experienced sees any gaping errors in my logic, please point them out! Avilator out:pilotfly:
  2. Which is why no one has an aircraft that fills the mission profile of a mach3 bomber, it was just too expensive, and missiles worked better.
  3. [NITPICK ON]It's "sheer" speed. "Shear" is a mode of material failure.[/NITPICK OFF]:book::thumbup:
  4. All joking aside I'm really looking forward to flying the thing. I am a pilot above all, that's why I bought into the DCS series, for the flying. Also, if I didn't like it, I wouldn't be building a simpit of it.:pilotfly:
  5. Duh, I was forgetting about that. How could I especially after watching "JDAM Blues":D
  6. NYET! I wants automatic! Then it has to shoot targets for me!:megalol:
  7. This plane is one of my favorites for exactly that reason: all the major design elements compliment each other. I think the folding wingtips are brilliant! From an engineering standpoint, that is. The result isn't the most aesthetically pleasing aircraft out there. But North American could afford to make a somewhat ugly airplane after the flawlessness that is the P-51.
  8. :( Aw, Darn it. Guess we can't sip a cold drink while the plane flies us to the target area.:D
  9. Okay, I understand that now. Is there any mechanism at all for it to follow a flight plan?
  10. Yes, that is a radalt antenna. The system combines the inputs from the ones facing downwards and the ones facing to the sides to come up with a more accurate altitude when in a bank.
  11. Well, here's the dimensions for the knob, from Everyspec. EDIT: I'm not sure if the A-10 uses the large or small one. Gear Handle.PDF
  12. So path hold and attitude hold are one in the same? Is GG or Viper correct?
  13. Wow, look how much of the vertical tails ground off! It almost ground off the entire radar altimeter sensor!
  14. I've never heard of a path hold, what does that do exactly? On a slightly different topic, here's a link to an article about simulators and real civilian planes. http://www.aopa.org/members/files/pilot/2010/september/feature_simulators.html
  15. It has attitude hold? As in, roll I can roll into a bank, engage it, and it will hold the bank angle? Or is that functionality limited to the precision engagement system associated with the cannon?
  16. Yes, the A-10 does have an autopilot. However, I don't know if you can couple it to an ILS.
  17. That seems a little more plausible. The gun may have sustained the damage while airborne. Looking at the hydraulic system layout, it seems unlikely that a single failure in either system would cause the gear failure. The gun is driven by both systems, and the gear can be actuated by both systems as well. Maybe there was physical damage that caused leaks downstream of the accumulators?
  18. That's right, I forgot about that. It would be in the checklist anyway.:book:
  19. Make it three! HB, man:yay:
  20. TBH, I don't think I would be that nervous. I'd probably be like, OK, here we go again....:pilotfly: I was also thinking, I'd probably take the plane up to angles 13 or 15 and do coordination rolls and fly it near stall speed to get a feel for the handling before attempting a landing.
  21. That's what checklists are for. Plus, the AOA caret doesn't work with the gear up. And there's a gear horn.
  22. Ahhh, but you still can't beat the GAU-8.
