Had alot of fun with this mission. Very nice terrain, weather and TOD. Good concept. Early in the mission things got very active, droping the frames on my system far more than any GOW mission. This lasted a good ten minutes. Then things improved. At one point I was hit--right engine fire--I hit the cutoff and made it back to the farp for repair and rearming. First time I've been able to do that in a comabt situation. Finally was killed looking for target behind enemy lines after quite awhile. Frames had improved to 30 by then. TY very much for the mission--hope to see more. I loved some of the complex ground activites, hehe, with lone vehicles racing about. Was in place to take out ammo dump but my laser craped out, and I wasted rockets.

Here is a short entertaining track (1vs1)---no ramming, hehe, but a few tense moments and almost great little landing. beat ah64.trk

I put up two apache dueling missions http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=634788#post634788 enjoy PS also added short entertaining track

A few folks asked for some missions to practice fighting the AH-64. Here are two, AH64 is 1vs1 and apache2 3vs3 with a few other things going on. Both are airstart and you may want to enable recovery so you can respawn and get that jerk. Airstart is less than perfect for trim reset, but good practice otherwise. The hellfire can be avioded if you see it with a faint and then reverse. The funnest way to kill an AH64? Evade missles, close real fast, overshoot him and turn back, get on his 6, very close, follow him around a bit for fun, then ram him in the back with your nose. I've been able to do this twice with excellent level ah64s in anti-helicopter mode. You have some terrain to work with in both missions. The apache2 (3vs3) is winable--I did for the first time tonite with no respawning. I hid my wingman under cover of terrain in two spots and took up a third position myself. You have just enough time to do this before they arrive. The close ah64 wingman took two missles, he was lasing me but for some reason did not fire a hellfire, the other two were distracted by my wingmen, killed by one missle and guns. I lost one wingman. At first I had thought the mission was impossible--i was wiped out many times, hehe. apache2.miz ah64.miz

I have two fun simple anti-ah-64 missions---air start, one with 3 vs 3 and a few ground vehicles and some other AC, and one a simple 1 vs 1. If anyone would like them, just PM me with an email. Regarding the hellfire. If you see the launch, you can move straight toward it in a very shallow arc one way or the other, then when it gets close, reverse the arc. Usually it will miss. Beaming is good if you are way out, but not much help closer in.
-
I've got a nice little mission built to play with the apaches. The hellfire is not as reliable as I first thought. Speed, gaining or loosing altitiude or side sliping can throw it off fairly often. Once the 64's gun is going it's pretty tough, but it does seem to take a stable lock for him to get a fix and fire. Once you get real close, they will try to evade but, long as you give them little room, you can follow them around and play with them for quite awhile. I killed one "excellent" AH64a tonite with my nose---bumpin him. Next time I tried same, I got smoke, but he turned on me and fired, hehe

Nice one Mbot. Love the terrain---thought it was all flat out there, but you have those very low rolling hills and nice farm land. Nice touch on take off, just about hit that monster. I had no issue with Sams but stayed very low. My wingman was all over the abrahms, which looked great appearing at fairly close range--he even survived the mission. Also nice fire mission. My only suggestion would be to add a second threat triggered by success against first perhaps on northern flank. Thanks so much for another very fun mission.
-
I've been playing several missions in GOW with agressive apaches, hehe, and little cover--out on the plains. The hellfires are brutal, and the shoot quick at a greater standoff than I can match with the vikhr--plus the vikhr seems to only kill them with airburst about 1 out of three tries. If I can get close they are not so hard to kill with canon. I'm just wondering what other guys are doing in their duels with the apaches. If you know you have a hellfire inbound, what are best tactics? I'm thinking high speed lateral, but so far not the best success. TY sirs

hehe, I think it was flank guard, but I opened it up last nite, and my guess it was one of your great coms that had me thinking that. I hope you are working on some new ones :)
-
Mbot, I'm I crazy or did I play one of your missions where I got a "live" data link update with new targets? How did you do that?
-
But if you stay low you are safe. I agree the Hawks are scary, but the mission is doable. Frederf: RE GOW, chapter one is totally doable, 2 gets a bit crazy and at least one mission is basically impossible, because the start points of the enemy column have been placed too close. However all can be edited, so you can pull out what you don't like. The sniper tanks are only dangerous inside 4k, and if you side slip they won't hit you. The abrahms and Leopards are the worst because they eat your missles---there it's crucial to keep the wingie alive long enough to get some of them. I make him hold behind ingress untill i figure out whats going on. Also there are few that play way to slow---again they can be easily cleaned up to play well. I have my GOW missions backed up and my player.lua When I hit one that I cannot even get close in, I open it and take a look. All that said there are many great missions in the GOW. To me ED resources are better spent in giving us an addtional campaign and improving various issues like FARP templates 3D, placement, vehicle DMs etc than fitting an RWR. I was hoping to see more missions appearing, but I think ED should help out a bit in this area---the life of the sim is content. Everything is not perfect but who else gave us a fun study sim lately?
-
After reading all the previous posts in other threads on the issue, it seems the reason is that what are modeled in the sim are prototypes. A production version would have had RWR, i think there is a place for the hardware and we also know RWR or something like was tested on one KA-50. To me it's no big deal in current threat enviroment as modeled in the sim.

GOW Chapter 2 Mission 3.2: Am I Missing Someting?
uhoh7 replied to ericinexile's topic in User Created Missions General
Ok here is an example--and please I LOVE these missions now, so this is with great respect: ATO-B-P4.1.miz "Area Defense. Forward reconnaissance units have reported enemy forces advancing west from the staging area around Samtredia and Sadzhavakho. The likely objective of the push is Abasha and Ketilari. The road bridge east of Marani will be a key blocking point of their advance. Prevent enemy forces from crossing the river and engaging friendly ground forces." Now this is highly misleading, because the M1A2 column is over the aforementioned bridge before you can get 1/4 the way to the target area--at full speed. It is impossible to forfill the goal as stated. Maybe this is intentional. The column breaks into two beautifully, with the tanks seemingly held up by terrain at an overpass( because the cone formation will not allow them to make it under) while bradleys rush forward. Meanwhille AH64's come at you from the flank. It's a wonderfull scenario, FPS is good, but I defy anyone to stop this column before it crosses the bridge. After looking over the mission goals and objectives, 100% is impossible unless starting point of enemy column is moved east to allow them to be stopped at bridge as advertised--even then with agressive enemy air it would be really hard--but at least possible. While there is a narrow window to attack after the bridge, loadout is inadeqate to deal with all threats before objective 1 is reached. A few simple adjustments would fix this mission, and it's understandable with so many missions that some need adjustments. I suggest a thread be created for missions like this one, where issues can be reported and updated versions be posted---it's easy to insert a replacement in the campaign. all the best, -
GOW Chapter 2 Mission 3.2: Am I Missing Someting?
uhoh7 replied to ericinexile's topic in User Created Missions General
The chapter 2 area defense missions have also mystified me unitl your explanation GG. The mission goals speak of stop advances, but I never understood why goals were not reached when the advances were indeed stopped. Friendly deaths do explain this---what would be nice is a message upon the deaths fo these units to the effect or more immersive a radio comm. Please don't get me wrong, many of these are wonderful missions with great interactions-- I was taken out by A10s tonite with Aim9s, and other time was forced to take down AH-64s with canon at close range, after hiding between buildings under hellfire assault. It's hard to get the priorites perfect with 2 vikhr abrahms platoons in full advance and enemy air close in, hehe. I finnaly got good enough to get through chapter one in the campaign format, but chapter two now has me ready to open the single missions again. -
Campaign progress: Am I missing something?
uhoh7 replied to LennyLloyd's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I just finished a hasty attack over a large city about five missions into chapter two. Even my system, which I just built, was not smooth in this mission, even after 45 min in the target area. This was ATO-B-P5.2.miz I understand your concern about "empty world" and I've grow to very much enjoy the campaign and all the work you have put into it. But it's hard to say which is a bigger hit to realism, a little emptier world, or gameplay which is not smooth. My suggestion would be to note the slowest missions, and without having to redo all your work, just pair them down a bit and offer an alternate "Chapter two lite". I think this would allow many more users to enjoy the campaign in the second chapter. To test I took ATO-B-P5.2 and spent 15 min clearing out air defenses and units far from the flight path and target areas. My FPS on take off went from 20 to 50. I then flew to battle zone, which is over a big city that I thought might have been the problem partly for FPS--but now my frames were very smooth. I could not honestly tell the difference in action around me. Very Very busy but smooth. What was a not fun mission because of jerky gameplay sudden became very very fun. I have to say thank you for not locking these missions so they can be tweaked. I probably wreaked some triggers, but if any wants to try this version and compare to orignal please PM me with email, I'd doubt you would see much difference----and I'm sure someone who more familiar with the ME and chapter two missions could do a great job without huge time investment. -
Photos of real Ka-50: New secret stuff on the Overhead Panel?
uhoh7 replied to eV1Te's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
hehe, the bottom line is we are flying a prototype which never did and never will see any combat besides a few stafing runs against hungry insurgents. The good news is that ED was as faithfull as we could ever expect. RWR? Not needed in this sim. The peak of realism in DCS is the copter (that's the most important) As to our targets, they are more simple. Take the Abrahms, mister 2 vikhr. Well maybe these missles cannot penetrate the armor, but they certainly could disable one. So the DM on the tank is primitive, but the end result might not be so far out of reality. The trees? Well we can't hide behind them, but the manpads are more aviodable than in RL. What I say is don't upgrade the manpad code unless you let us hide in the trees. It's an imperfect world, but at least ED is giving us what we want most: a functional cockpit, a good FM, and a world to fly it in that is interesting, dangerous but not impossible. As to the mystery switch--god knows all the little tweaks the few existing KA-50's have had. Good find though. -
It seems each tank behaves a bit differently in this regard. They will engage you quite close in some cases if you drop a bit low. The T-72 is very active at steeper angles, but right over the top you are safe. That little mission I put up is quite a challange to aviod damage and crashing long enough to get all five (for me anyway), and since all are different you can compare behaviors.
-
point taken. I was just surprised the S-8 would take out an abrahms at all.
-
I've been playing around with S-8 rockets and main battle tanks last few days. What I discovered, and some may know, is that they are very blind if you get right over them. Even the small arms fire ceases, and they do not seem to want to fire the main gun at a target right next to them. Of course this only works when they are alone and their buddies can't help out, but's it's quite entertaining to torture a lone tank in this way, and very good practice for helicopter control and observing S-8 behavior. Also you get to admire the nice tanks ED has given us from the cockpit. You can throw your own test together, or I threw up something in the missions section, with a series of MBTs and an S-8 Loadout. It's a sort of cat/mouse play where the mouse is potentially very dangerous.
-
Now is your chance to get even with those main battle tanks who like to take pot shots at helicopters. Tank Torture Air start with rocket loadout. 5 tanks of different types are proceeding up the road several km apart. All can be destroyed with S-8 rockets. Practice strafing if you wish, however the most effective way to get all five with a single loadout is to move in fast and pull up right over them. You will find they are blind to a Blackshark in close hover, and can be easily taken out with short volleys. It's good training for control, rocket shooting, and very satisfying. The tanks are spaced far enough so they cannot give fire support to each other. Tank Torture.miz
