VR Shaders mod for better VR experience
ShaunX replied to Kegetys's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Thank you sir, your mod makes a big difference for a great many of us mortals ! -
In flight is what I mean. It stays as a square throughout flight.

The new release is running perfectly on my rig with one exception, I'm not seeing the new VR Mask on my screen mirror. My screen still has the normal square shape. I believe it's supposed to be on by default ? My spec is in my sig, I'm using a Reverb G2. Other Reverb G2 users are seeing the VR Mask as default. DCS Log attached. dcs.log

point taken sorry. You know, I'm wondering... Kegetys is definately currently active on his own website but hasn't posted or responded in the DCS forum for nearly a year..then a very similar VR Mask shows up in 2.7. Hmmm...

If you get youself a copy of a mod manager it takes all of the risk out of it. Once it's set up it's one click to install a mod and one click removes it I use OvGME. Get it here https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/OVGME. Good instructions there too. Once installed you'll want to set up 2 seperate profiles - one will be used for mods that go in your saved games\DCS folder and the other one for mods (such as the shaders mod we're talking about) which go in your DCS installation folder. To add a mod to OvGME is just has to be in the correct folder structure. The one that @Woona created.. ..is already in that structure so just needs to be unzipped and copied to your OvGME mods folder and will appear in the OvGME list of mods when you run it. Make sure you put it in the mods folder for the profile that points at the DCS installation. Once you've used it once I guarantee you'll use it for all your mods.

Thanks, I'll report it (Not that I actually need an FPS boost, it's running as well as in 2.5.6)

I don't see a mask, flying or not
-
What a fantastic update ! Thank you ED!!! I did some benchmarking against tests I did yesterday and I'm seeing zero performance/FPS degradation with identical settings and an 8-10% increase in GPU utilisation. In VR (G2), the clouds are fantastic. I can see the vertical shimmering on distant ones but it's so slight that I only notice if I'm looking for it. The real treat though is the lighting effect the clouds are having on the terrain. Syria in particular is just stunning. Also love the sound enhancements to the Hornet. The rattling of the wheels on the Supercarrier catapult took me by surprise. Great Job ED !

I don't see a mask in VR at all. Same square mirror, or if I go full screen the mirror fills my display. Is it worth me turning it on and if so, how do I do it ?

You could try posting to his Nexus thread for the mod .. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/46999?tab=posts

I agree. Just flown in all the terrains I have and from the Supercarrier. Absolutely zero performance degradation. I have to say, apart from the clouds being fantastic (I can see but hardly notice the vertical shimmer on distant ones), it's the effect they have on the lighting of the terrain, particularly Syria, that really adds an atmospheric quality (no pun intended). I flew through a forested hilly region in Southern Turkey and it could have been a misty Amazon rainforest ! Water also looks more realistic to me, nit sure if that's cloud effect or if they've targetted it specifically. Also, have you noticed the new sounds in the Hornet ? Rattling of the wheels on the Supercarrier catapult, Afterburner ? How do you turn on the VR mask you mentioned ?

Decided to wait till this morning to upgrade, then couldn't sleep past 04:30 like a kid on Christmas morning so got up and installed Runs lovely in 2D, no crashes and clouds are beautiful. Haven't had a chance to run in VR yet because, as I happened to run a bunch of benchmarks yesterday in the ReBAR thread, thought I'd repeat them with 2.7 before doing anything else. As per yesterday the benchmark is a 2 minute, high speed, NOE, high G turning circle in the Viper over the city of Damascus - Syria NOE Tight Turn Benchmark.trk Results added to yesterdays (Note ReBAR is still on for the 2.7 tests - not sure if it makes any difference or not. I'll perhaps try without later) FrameView_Summary 2.7 Test.xlsx So initially, it looked like I lost 20 FPS and clouds standard or ultra made no difference. Then I applied @Woona's version of the shaders mod and bam, I'm back to the level I was at in 2.5.6 (and I had @speed-of-heat's version installed for those earlier tests) ..the biggest change appears to be in GPU utilisation: mid 80s gone to mid 90s on all the 2.7 runs. Interestingly max FPS has gone way up too.

Was that in VR with the G2 ? How's the performance ?

EXPERIMENTAL: Resizable BAR in DCS for NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Virtual Reality
I'm not an expert and have no idea, which is why I'm asking for an explanation. I've only read.. " How does Resizable BAR work? In a nutshell, the feature, set via the system BIOS, determines how much of the graphics memory, or VRAM, on your video card is made available to be mapped for access by the CPU. Generally, this is limited to just 256MB of the card's onboard VRAM—which is to say, not much of it. A motherboard with Resizable BAR activated, however, can boost the limit to the full capacity of the VRAM buffer. " so you're saying that the card's VRAM buffer is represented by the shared gpu memory graph in task manager, so if it only remains at 0.1 then it's still only accessing the 256MB and therefore resizable BAR is not being used ? So would you say that this means that setting the 3 flags is not enough to enable it's use in DCS, or that the CPU simply doesn't utilise it for DCS (on my rig at least) ? Really appreciate any light you can shed. -
EXPERIMENTAL: Resizable BAR in DCS for NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Virtual Reality
We all went through the steps to enable and verify it's enabled in NVIDIA system information However, if you're correct then my benchmark is NOT using it as shared gpu memory remains at 0.1 GB throughout. Is there an article which describes that behavoir ? -

It seems our 3 flag method is making its way into other publications.. https://wccftech.com/heres-how-you-can-enable-resizable-bar-support-in-any-game-via-nvidia-inspector/ https://babeltechreviews.com/z390-resizable-bar-performance/ -
EXPERIMENTAL: Resizable BAR in DCS for NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Virtual Reality
..There may be something in this theory. I created a benchmark track with a 2 minute, high speed, NOE, high G turning circle in the Viper over the city of Damascus - Syria NOE Tight Turn Benchmark.trk I did 3 tests without ReBAR and then 3 with, rebooting between each test ..now I get a consistantly higher average FPS Interestingly my CPU and GPU temps are also consistantly lower. -
EXPERIMENTAL: Resizable BAR in DCS for NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Virtual Reality
Interesting point perhaps ? Perhaps the 3090's that have been tested in this thread aren't seeing a benefit because they don't need the additional bandwidth as they're already exploiting VRAM well in excess of the 10Gb of a 3080 in these benchmark scenarios. Perhaps we need to test with benchmarks which involve more dynamic environments to see a benefit ? -
EXPERIMENTAL: Resizable BAR in DCS for NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Virtual Reality
No option in Frameview to record frametimes. At least not in the summary file. It also generates a detail file for each run which for my 119 second samples each contains around 21,000 records ! There is a column in those files called "MsBetweenPresents", which may be equivilent ? ..but again, doesn't look like much different between files. The utility also comes with an Excel template that you can plug multiple detail files into to get graphical comparisons. Haven't had a chance to play with that yet but looks useful. Looks pretty good for a free utility. -
EXPERIMENTAL: Resizable BAR in DCS for NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Virtual Reality
Ok, I installed NVIDIA FrameView and did some tests. I created a benchmark track based on FA-18C->Instant Action->Syria->Free Flight. and recorded the first 120 seconds. My only control input was to set baro alt hold. The track flies with a wingman, from the Turkish coast, North East along the Orontes River valley for 120 seconds at 1500 ft barometric and just crosses the city of Antakya I set Frameview to record 119 seconds. I did my tests in 2D, my spec is in my sig and my settings pretty much match S-O-H's for VR and I have CAS installed I did one run without ReBAR, then 3 with ReBAR enabled via profileinspector , then another 2 without it. In each case I rebooted first, launched NVIDIA FrameView, Launched DCS, replay the track, then pressed the start record hot key immediately after clicking "fly" Doesn't look like any kind of improvement to me, though I don't really know how to interpret these figures. Summary file attached.FrameView_Summary.xlsx -
I also made the same changes to the Nexus version and it now works perfectly.

Ah right, thanks. Think I'll stick with the original for just now. Just flown for an hour and it's sooo good. Time for one more before dinner
