** DCS: F-14 Development Update - September!! **

Yeah, I'm sure it will be. I just had to get that out of the way first before the big reveal tomorrow. -

I guess it's the F-14 community talking (as - hate to break it to you like this - planes don't actually talk ;) ), but I see your point. Still rubs me the wrong way if it is indeed so. They could have come up with something better, IMHO, given how much effort they put in these sideshows. -
** DCS: F-14 Development Update - September!! **
Dudikoff replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
While the countdown page is still up, have to admit I'm kind of confused by their slogan there - "Welcome back, baby". I get that it refers to "Anytime, baby" slogan, but Tomcat was not the "baby" there (IIRC, it was a response to a challenge to duel with the USAF F-15's). So, shouldn't it be in the form of "I'm back, baby" or "Guess who's back, baby" or "Guess who's coming to dinner, baby"? -
Anybody tried how these updates work at close range? When I was trying out one of the quick missions with the AIM-7's and firing at one target a few miles out from its 4-5 o' clock position, roughly the same altitude, the missiles seemed to have taken a huge intercept offset to the right that I didn't even see them showing up in front of me. They've never even gotten to the target, but they were fired with the flashing shoot indication.

From the news post: "Due to both an Open Beta and Release version of DCS World being released last week to support the Free Weekend, there is no update for this week. However, on 10 October we will release the updated MiG-29 Fulcrum for Flaming Cliffs 3! This will include a Professional Flight Model (PFM), updated cockpit, and several new cockpit system functions. This will be a FREE update for Flaming Cliffs 3 owners! For those that do not own Flaming Cliffs 3, we will also make it available as a separate purchase." Wonder what those will include (hopefully the waypoint indication at least). Can't wait to try the 29's PFM, though. Finally!!

The question is how realistic were those old days?

SSD vs HDD - DCS loading times?
Dudikoff replied to sc_neo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Same here. When I moved the DCSW 2.0 from a 7200 RPM HDD Raid 0 to a decent SATA3 Samsung 850, it seemed like a 20-30% improvements in loading times, not more. Moving the 2.5 to the NVME drive brought seemingly zero improvement. The worst part is that it can still stutter for a moment to load some explosion effects or sounds or whatever it does occasionally when I hit some aircraft, for instance. -
What new feature of the Hornet are you most looking forward to?

Same here. -
OK, but would the magnets be fixed in this solution or I'd have to mount them myself?
-
Well, the flight model is not a simple plug and play thing. It would take quite some extra work for the developers to have switchable 3D models, textures, somewhat different flight models, support different weapon attachment points, etc. and for what purpose exactly? So someone can experiment with a USAF F-15E in a way it's never flown? Ultimately, it's up to the developers, but it seems a bit far fetched to expect them going through all this for such little gain.
-
Not really the same thing. An F-16 might be flown on some theoretical short range mission without the fuel tanks, while in the same case the F-15E would still get flown with them as it makes no sense to remove them. The closer analogy might have been operators of one of these later F-16's with CFT's, e.g. Poland. How often do they take them off?
-
Hmm, I actually managed to add them manually to my Instant Mission list. I'm confused by the fact that FC3 owners get the individual modules upgrades and docs, but not the single missions? I presume other modules (F-15, Su-27, Su-25, etc.) come with extra quick and SP missions?
-
Is there a noticeable difference in the throttle precision and response between the two sensors? I'm sure I have the later PCB as I bought a new Cougar quite late (last stocks) fearing it might be the last of its kind given how the flight sim market seemed that back then. The serial number is like 31 thousand something.
-
What do you mean by future ready? DLSS? It might be useful, but it might not be supported by DCSW.. And without it, IMHO it would be better to add a bit more to the amount you've got for the 1080 and upgrade to a used 1080Ti which gives you the same performance levels as 2080.
-
Do you have the FC3 installed as well? I do and I don't see any extra Su-33 instant missions (there's only the old carrier landing one which came with FC3). But, I did get the offer to install the Su-33 yesterday and it did download some delta patch of ~ 37 MB, but nothing changed on the UI. If I check it manually, I can see the separate module folder and the Su-33 missions there in the QuickStart folder, but they are not shown in the game when Instant Mission is selected.

I just meant to say that it seemed somewhat inconsistent pairing the 5V55 in game with 5V55KD (with about equal max range values in game and in RL), while the 48N6 in-game is about half the stated maximum range in RL which might indicate that the values in-game are probably not the maximum engagement ranges in RL.
-
So, in-game Pyotr Velikiy also has both S-300F and S-300FM (the bow battery and radar) installed and uses them both? Interesting, never checked that. That seems a bit inconsistent. Pairing the first according to the matching range, while the in-game range of the second missile is half the real life specification. I presume that the real life values are probably maximum range values achieved when engaging an incoming target with a certain airspeed which won't change course. So, it could be that the game uses half of that range for a more realistic engagement range value in which case the missile type in game might be 5V55R instead of 5V55KD.

Does DCS World benefit from more than 16GB Ram?
Dudikoff replied to StefVR's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
That's a mid-range card and those were soldered on laptop mainboards so that's not upgradeable directly. I also doubt such a laptop has a Thunderbolt 2/3 port either? The only other alternative would be to use some expansion card port (e.g. an M.2 PCI-E slot or an express card slot or some mini PCI-E slot) to connect to an external desktop GPU card via some 3rd party adapter card, but those can be tricky to get working. -
Yeah, I got this impression, hence why I asked to be sure. Thanks for the prompt reply. For me that would be a no then, since the main reason I switched to my previously unused TM Cougar is the programming options that TM Target software provides (which started after getting the TM MFD's alongside my Saitek X65 and quickly realizing how it would actually be great to be able to combine them with the HOTAS). Not sure how big is the market for such a variant, but MilesD sold a number apparently and I didn't get one in time.

Perhaps someone wrote it incorrectly presuming the value should be in milliseconds (i.e. 1000 seconds ~ 17 minutes).
-
Does the sensor fit the throttle and is compatible with stock electronics?
-
It should be noted that the Virpil grip and base costs as much or more than the entire Warthog set, while the Warthog grip is metal. You can't really expect similar gimbal quality for less than half the price (since I'm sure the Warthog Throttle costs much more to make than the Stick).

And there was a specific export version of the Phoenix developed before this deal? Come on, if the regime was cleared by the Nixon administration to get the F-14A (or the F-15A) and the Phoenix at the time, what's AIM-7F compared to those? I do distinctly remember reading in some book (though it was more about politics and oil price hike to boost the Shah regime) how the U.S. officials were almost surprised that the Shah did not order the AIM-7F's for his Tomcats (he was apparently quite involved in the procurement process and insisted on F-14's over the F-15's IIRC).
-
True, but as the A-6 radar system is much older and is a ground attack one, I presume it's much more complex to operate than AWG-9 (I'd expect there's lots of controls for tuning the radar picture and switch through different modes to be able to ID a target among all that clutter) and unless the RIO AI is cheating, it's also more complex to program it to operate the system correctly and designate targets.
-
Makes sense. I was just pointing out that it can't be assumed with certainty that the regime had always ordered the best weapon type available together with the platform that was purchased.
