Hey Frostiken I agree mostly with your point, but you are maybe not taking into account the radio call outs that give bullseye calls to locate both Air and Ground units. These usually come from nearby friendly assets over the guard freq, or whatever freq that the mission designer set as the Bluefor frequency.
Now these calls are not Mission Critical, but it can keep you from overflying a AAA/SAM asset that was not on your brief.
The OFFSET function of the CDU really makes turning those calls into something that can increase your situational awareness. There is a OFFSET tutorial in my sig if you want to check it out.
*Oh also, the TAD has a few HOOK settings that can really make the Bullseye Calls a lot more manageable.
Hi Geezuz, welcome to the Forums!
Don't give up hope, there are some things you can do to help your target acquisition in the TGP. There are both GAIN and LEVEL settings that can be changed in the TGP display MFCD. They are next to OSB's 19 and 20. Look in the Flight Manual at page 329 to see them under marker # 11. Try those out and see if you get better results.
Strongharm has some real good post's on his tip's and tricks for TGP searching.
Do a search for his post's in this forum and you will be glad you did.
Your problem is you have not set your target in the TGP as your SPI. In the screenshot you posted your SPI is currently set at your steerpoint.
Use the TMS UP LONG to set your TGP point target as your SPI.
You will know this is set when you look in your HUD at the small diamond representing the TGP sensor and it will have a line coming off of it.
Once your SPI is set to your target in the TGP you will get a ASL or Azimuth Steering Line to steer you on to your target.
Do a search again...look at page 173, and 184 of the Flight Manual, it will give some more details.
Specifically EGI, GPS, and EGI Blended FOM
The D is for the DTS FOM, the B is for the EGI in Blended mode.
I think that refers to the "Figure of Merit"
Figure of Merit or FOM referres to the accuracy of the system in question. It is a numerical value assigned to show the pilot the level of accuracy of the system.
FOM's can be seen for the DTS, EGI, and GPS systems.
Do a search of the Flight Manual for "Figure of Merit" for more information.
Hey GAJ52, thanks for the kind words.
I will consider adding that.
Here's a challenge to you, begin creating your own Shutdown Checklist. I believe you can make a good one if you try.
Take your time putting it together, and then release it on the Forums and see what people think. I will keep an eye out for it.
The CDU is IMHO the "Final Frontier" and will require a lot of study to find out all of it's capabilities. I dont know if any one tutorial can do the CDU justice.
My best advice is to break up the CDU by Pages, and learn one at a time.
You can start up a free flight ramp start mission, get the A-10C up and running. Then start by looking at the CDU and have the Flight Manual open to that page, then alt tab to reference back and forth.
Good luck.
Hi sdmccorm, there is a link in my signature line to the Radio Tutorial that I put together. Check it out, and please write back in this thread what it was that was hanging you up. That way others reading this thread can learn from your experience.
Hope you find it helpful.
