Doing something useful to keep 150 people alive isn't ridiculous There... fixed it for you. From my point of view this is all window dressing and will not accomplish anything besides creating hassle for the crew. I hasten to add that this new 'rule' created by the relevant authorities is a recommendation.

It really isn't an 'outbreak' and the lock has been in place since 2001. It really isn't difficult to crash a plane when you're in command... even with all the jumpseats taken. Now we hear a Dutch politician wondering if the doorlock is still relevant. I don't know whether to laugh or cry...
-
I think you're wrong so lets agree to disagree... To significantly affect the way things are done onboard an airplane because of some idiot doing this sort of thing once in a 'billion flights' is not sensible...
-
Of course they'll manage. That's not the issue. "Does this make sense?" is the question one should ask...

Having 2 persons in the cockpit (the '2nd' one has to be a cabin crew member obviously) is inconvenient at best... totally impracticable at worst. There have been many times where someone 'has to go' and the colleagues in the back are busy serving your meal or otherwise busy with their duties. Oh well, you guys will have to eat your steak cold then, no problem. Having 2 persons in the cockpit at all times is another ridiculous rule to keep the flying public happy. Never mind the fact that _nothing_ was accomplished safety wise... just another inconvenience to the man or woman working onboard...

Nowhere have I read that the captain used the keypad to alert the other crewmember or to enter the unlock code. Did he forget? Just one of the many simple questions that need to be answered before we put the blame on someone... but no... this is a public lynching by a rabid crowd wanting 'answers'. I don't care if the answer is seemingly obvious. The investigation needs to be done carefully and methodically and thats impossible to do within a day or 2. It is a disgrace how this tragedy is/was handled by _all_ parties.... media, prosecutor, politicians and even a US air-force general (what the heck was _that_ all about?). Everything is in the public domain including voice recordings and medical histories of persons involved... 2(!!) days after the fact. A sad state of affairs...

Going out on a limb here but... I don't think that Valve's HMD has a high enough res. for DCS:World either. It's been a while since Oculus demo'ed their latest and greatest. I'm sure they'll continuously iterate on their prototype. I'd be very surprised if they didn't have something in the pipeline that is significantly better than Crystal Cove (or whatever it's called). They do _seem_ to be focused more on the mobile side of things these days. Also, they're are trying to come up with a way to interact within VR. Something that Valve already has a solution for... We'll see. It's good that there's competition because that will spur development of bigger and better things. I just hope it doesn't turn into a platform war. I don't want to be stuck in the "Steam-world" (prefer my DCS to be stand-alone) for sure...

Never mind the fact that you're going to spend the better part of the day 'updating' your OS with all the patches that MS released over the years...
-
Mike... do you have _ANY_ idea how lucky you are? ;-)
-
Yes, I feel the same way. From listening to the keynote it seems Oculus is investing heavily into mobile to speed up the adoption of VR. They see at as a way to get VR into the hands of millions of users as opposed to a thousands of (niche-) PC gamers. They (Oculus) will release a 'PC-' version but there's no telling when. If there's nothing concrete regarding a release date towards the end of the year I'm going for the Vive...

I'm in the same boat but... if you're going to upgrade, primarily for DCS, you should hold off until it is released. It's tempting to buy it now but you'll be far better off waiting. 1)No need to think about it now. 2)Hardware gets better as time passes. 3)You'll be on the bleeding edge once DCS does ship. Resist the urge to upgrade...

OK.... what the heck am I doing wrong? (radio issues)
chaos replied to JughedJones's topic in MiG-21Bis
You can do it! I know you can! ATC are just bullies. Don't give them the pleasure of bossing you around... (sorry, I can't be of help) -
It's real alright. A lot of people have tried and blogged about it. Each and everyone was highly enthusiastic about the experience. Of course this was all done in a test-setting with a large prototype instead of those slick looking glasses shown on stage. It remains to be seen how this is going to work in the home. Kinect showed great promise but didn't get very far. Hopefully this will go a lot further. MS was able to demonstrate this to an audience first but there are other companies dabbling in the VR/AR space. Notably 'Magic Leap' which is supposed to demo their AR device sometime this spring(?). Remains to be seen how this is going to develop over the next couple of years but I'm hopeful.

Another useless youtube video... What is the point? Seriously, why?

Windows X, Free upgrade for the first year.
chaos replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There's no need for that. I apologize if that offended you. It certainly wasn't my intention to offend anyone. Anyway, back on topic... Windows 10... -
Windows X, Free upgrade for the first year.
chaos replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hiya Skate, That was clear to me but, apparently, for 'Ronbo316' it wasn't. Personally I have no use for an Xbox. One feature I do like is the option to save the last 30sec(?) of gameplay baked right into the OS. I can see myself using that. Also, they haven't revealed all of it. According to the 'Xbox-guy' they'll have more to share during 'GDC'(?). Sometime in April I think. It's good to see MS back. I was getting tired of all the Apple and Android posts. :-) -
Windows X, Free upgrade for the first year.
chaos replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Windows 10 will, in the foreseeable future, not be a subscription service like Office 365 or Adobe CS. They're just keen to get everybody onto their new OS (for obvious reasons). Regarding Xbox and PC getting linked... are you suggesting we're going to have to purchase an Xbox in order to play games on our PC? -
Apparently it is "easy" to port from DX11 to DX12. I'm not saying ED should start porting it now... let's get EDGE out the door first. However, it is encouraging to know that it could be done at some point.

Windows X, Free upgrade for the first year.
chaos replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
No need to be suspicious. They just want everyone to upgrade to W10 as quickly as possible. Also, Apple and Google, offer 'free' OS upgrades. MS simply can't stay behind and lose market-share in the consumer market. That said... I'm going to buy a full Win10 version on day 1. For some reason upgrading my current OS seems like a recipe for disaster. -
Just saw the Windows 10- keynote and... wow... blown away by MS HoloLens. AR device that seems to be quite far ahead in development. These are truly interesting times in the tech world... dare I say... 'magical'. Eye-tracking, no wires... Would love to know if this (AR-) tech can be beneficial to DCS World.

I'd imagine this area to be too big for the game to handle (to be fair, this is an unknown for World 2.0). Compare the sq. miles to the current map. Also... there can be no Vietnam scenario without a significant portion of Laos and Cambodia mixed in. I'd be fantastic to have but a b**ch to produce. Think of all the assets that need to be produced...

OTR #43 - A-10C Engine Fire Emergency Procedures
chaos replied to Bunyap's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Liked the video a lot. It shows that you're putting a lot of thought into these. That 'extra' problem regarding terrain and performance is often overlooked. re: bold faced procs. Take you're time completing these. Yes, they're supposed to be done without delay but you wouldn't be the first to cut the 'live' engine in an effort to contain the problem. Go through it methodically and "think" before you start throwing switches. You might have done that but it wasn't apparent from looking at the video. I realize I'm just nitpicking here but it would be good point to make, I think. -
OTR #44 - Dive Bombing in the Bf 109 K-4
chaos replied to Bunyap's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
Ah.... Bunyap's most excellent series of videos. Highly recommended for newbees and experts alike. I like the 'laid-back' presentation style. The video on the Rift also comes highly recommended. BTW, welcome back from your assignment abroad and keep those vids coming! -
