  1. I'd agree with your first sentence, StrongHarm. However, I don't think 4K displays in smartphone size are cheap enough for a while. Also, you'd need a beefy system just to drive all those pixels at a minimum of 75fps. I'll most certainly buy a CV1 (or even a DK2 if I can't resist the urge any longer) but even that will not get us to a comfortable level performance wise...
  2. Re: DCS App I was happy to see ED trying to add to the experience by releasing this app. Unfortunately not useful to me as I'm on an MS Surface Pro. I realize I'm part of a small minority and so this doesn't come as a surprise. However, the lack of an Android app is a bit puzzling to me. I can only hope ED finds the time and money to develop a similar app for Android (and Windows) in the near future. The developer support for this fruit-company is annoying at best. Strange as the vast majority is not on that platform to begin with. Sorry, had to vent... Witchking... ED refers to it as 'our app' in the email.
  3. This!!! Even for the fast movers, there's a lot of fun to be had doing a 'Trench Run' through narrow canyons. I foresee another racing competition flying from A to B via a route through the mountains... just like we did back in '96(?) using Flanker 1.x. How far we've come. It is truly amazing what ED (and comp-tech in general)have accomplished in less than 2 decades...
  4. The room is cold for a purpose. They're overclocking a 286 to a whopping 33MHz. No need for a stinkin' watercooler!
  5. Don't know why MCT and 'Full Rated Thrust' is entering this discussion because it doesn't belong... Also, procedures vary among companies. Boeing recommends the captain assumes control of thrustlevers during take-off at all times. Setting of thrust is not necessary by either pilot as auto-throttle does it better/quicker after pressing the TOGA button. :-) Assumed Temp (or FLEX which is the same thing) for reasons stated previously.
  6. Technically speaking anything over 60kts. is considered a jetstream (high or low level). It's not possible to define a 'stream' in DCS as winds aloft are 'map-wide' and not confined within a 'corridor' though. Personally I couldn't care less about jetstreams in DCS. Other weather phenomena such as fog could do with extensive improvement in the sim. Hopefully EDGE will allow that...
  7. That stick mod is bitchin'! Take my moneeeeeey!
  8. Very happy with the Surface. The stylus is very handy and OneNote is the ultimate note-taking tool. But... Chivas...? Really? Jameson all the way, mate! :-)
  9. If you have a few Surface 3's lying around... would you consider sending me one? My Surface Pro (original) needs a companion :-) Great idea... I'll be testing this once I get my new desktop sometime in Jan.

  11. Flying at 10ft. is not realistic either, is it? ;-)
  12. Missed that quote... oh well... whatever it will be... it'll be great!
  13. My guess would be Harrier (AV-8B). I seem to remember them (Leatherneck) playing around with a VTOL Mig-21...
  14. Don't take my sentences out of context. I've re-read my posts and I stand by what I've said. Thanks.
  15. Guys... I don't deny that flaps increase drag and therefore allow a steeper decent angle. The point I'm making is that this is not the primary function of a flap which some of you seem to be thinking. The flap was not designed to allow a steeper approach angle. What would you do if you were established on approach, above the glideslope, with full flaps trying to re-intercept? We're talking F-86 here... not a Cessna...
  16. It's 'early days' yet and nothing is a known at his point. It does seem to put the tech sector on the head as far as augmented/virtual reality goes... Introducing 'Magic Leap'. This company has been operating under the radar and is close to revealing their gadget. Google is heavily invested (500mil) and they just ended a second round of capital building adding close to another 500mil from tech-heavies. Supposedly this is beyond anything anyone has ever seen. It sounds like snake-oil to me but Graeme Devine (ex DOOM fame) has joined the company including many other leading tech- people. Time to ditch DK2? :D
  17. Flaps are meant to increase Lift-coefficient thereby allowing to fly at a lower IAS and thus shortening the landing distance (amongst other things). It has absolutely nothing to do with 'angle of approach' (I assume you mean approach angle i.e. 3deg. glideslope). The fact that you may have better visibility over the nose is a byproduct and, again, has nothing to do with approach angle... Speedbrakes increase drag and thereby allowing you to descend at a steeper angle with equal speed or decrease speed at constant altitude.
  18. I wouldn't put too much faith in what the owner of that website claims. Also, the quote doesn't make any sense to me. English is not my first language, so I might be completely mistaken, but... using flaps to increase approach angle is not the intended use-case. You should be using speedbrakes instead... Interesting discussion regarding pitch-up moments while using flaps. I was taught that in high-wing aircraft (like a Cessna) you'll experience a pitch-up moment whereas in a low wing aircraft (like a Piper) you'd experience a pitch-down moment. Of course these are straight wing aircraft and so it might be different in an F-86. I'll investigate further although I'd be surprised if Belsimtek got this behaviour wrong. It's fundamental aerodynamics which all these flight-models are based on. Thats one of the things I like about these sims. Besides blowing stuff up it also makes me question and get back into the theory of systems and aerodynamics. It's an educational tool as well! :D
  19. One of the best endorsements for DCS and the Rift that I've come across. Enthusiastic is an understatement. Great vid.
  20. Could you elaborate? What does "...wing surface in operational condition" mean?
  21. Enjoyed the discussion sofar. Pro's and cons to each side without either side resorting to yelling and name-calling. I've been wondering about the same issues for some time and I'd love to join the debate. I've flown the P-51 with keyboard/mouse and a CPU from way-back-when so it wouldn't be fair to make any comments . I always thought something was wonky about the FM in the low-speed regime though. MFG pedals are waiting to be hooked up. Money for Rift CV1 set aside. Wishlist for new PC prepared. No matter what... i'll have a brand new PC by the end of January! :-)
  22. I couldn't have said it any better in one sentence. It's not just about numbers (although they have to be correct). Simulation is truly an art-form and all the developers have my respect when they get it right... 'numbers' and 'feel' combined.
  23. EDGE confirmed!!! :-)
  24. Interesting read and it appears that my source was not correct... Thanks for the link!
  25. My information is from a book called "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" (page 176) where the F-86 is specifically mentioned. Super Sabre might also have been affected by it... I'm not familiar with its wing-design. It doesn't really matter because it happens more or less on all swept wing aircraft. They 'fixed' this problem to some extent in subsequent wing-designs by adding vortex gens, fences etc. so that the airflow would remain attached for longer. Anyway, still interested to hear from people who've done research into this. If the sim- F-86 exhibits the same behavior, I'd be very impressed...
