  1. Patience is a virtue. And for those without: Patience-ointment™! Only 99.99 for a 5oz tube. Buy two, pay for three (preferrably)! It puts the lotion in the basket! In other words: It'll be out when it's out, and I'll hazard to guess that most of us will hit BUY faster than the speed of light when it does. Hell, I know I will, regardless if I have to wait for another year. Fanboi? Hell yes. Where do I sign to get my FanBoi-diploma?
  2. Hehe. Nice edit of the Kuz' speed, most likely. Either that, or they've radically changed the behaviour of the aircraft. Nifty, regardless
  3. Ah, nice =) Besides, IF the case should prove to be too restrictive in terms of heat-dissipation, there's nothing wrong in upgrading later :D
  4. All in all the setup looks very very nice indeed. When it comes to your notes, here's some considerations I would consider. Mind you, this post is also based on you buying and building the computer yourself, and not on a system bought complete. In regards of CPU: I know that at least here in Norway, the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 is about $600 or so cheaper than the Extreme, without all that much difference in speed. Plus that it overclocks easier as well (as far as I've been able to find out), if this is of interest to you. I'd look at the difference in overall price vs the difference in the overall performance of the CPU's, plus read up on reviews of both chips. Litte use in paying the white out of your eyes for little gain :) RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. There's a myriad of ways you can create this array, but I'd say that the one most useful to gamers is RAID 1. This basically uses two identical disks and mirrors them, so that both disks contains the same data (the data is written to both disks at the same time). If one disk fails, you still have the system running because the other disk in the RAID-set contains the same data, thus adding data-security to the setup. Swap out the failed drive, plug in a new one and boot back up, and the system will rebuild the data in most cases without you having to do anything more. Pros: increased data-security, a disk-failure usually won't mean a lenghty reinstall and/or lost data. Cons: The logical drive (the harddrive the operating system sees) will only be as large as ONE of the two disks, and the cost involved. In other words, if you put two 250gb disks into a RAID-1, you'll only have 250gb of space available. There's also RAID 0, which seamlessly blends the two disks together into one large disk. In the case of the two 250gb disks, making them into a RAID-0-set would give you a disk-size of approximately 500gb when the system was up and running. The bad thing with RAID-0 is that it's not fault-tolerant. Yes, you'll have approximately twice the diskspace, but you'll also loose your data in the case of one of the disks failing. It's marginally faster than RAID-1, if memory serves me, though. Not that such things matter much when you've got 10k RPM drives... About the Killer NIC: I'm not all that conviced that it'll give what it promises and thus be worth the $260 it costs, but other might disagree. I've read quite a few reviews of the cards, and none seem to be conclusive enough to give me a big enough decrease in latency, ping-times and outright speed/lessend CPU-load when compared to the price. Most motherboards today have at least a Gigabit-networking-card built in, and I've yet to see an online game that will even BEGIN to put a dent in the bandwith-capabilities of those cards, even though they don't run at full speed (most networking-devices for home-use are 100mbit only). Poor network performance and high latencies are dependent on so much more than just the networking card (Type of internet-connection, cable-quality used in all parts of the network (both in your home and between your house and the DSLAM/ISP), electronic interference, internet-connection on the servers you play on, etc). It might help a bit, but enough to warrant the $260 pricetag? USB-ports: If you find that you're running out of USB-ports, a USB 2.0-hub doesn't cost all that much. And unless I'm wrong, you can have up to 256 USB-ports addressed in your system, which gives you a lot of possibilities :D One thing I've also noticed, and this again could just be my personal opinion: The LX-W-case. Built, as far as I can find on the web, by Lian Li and then licenced to others, I fear that for this type of setup there could be temperature-issues depending on the fan-size and type installed, and the amount of air flowing through the case. This is especially something to think about when using the full-length x2900, and even more so if you choose to go for a Crossfire-setup. The 2900's gets hot, to say the least. Maybe I'm just being picky here after I got my Thermaltake Kandalf LCS (which is simply a monstrously big case), but when going for a high-powered system, don't skimp on the case it's going into, especially not when it comes to the size and flow of air. I know that if the LX-W is about the same size of the CoolerMaster Centurion 534, there will be VERY little room between the edge of the videocards and the main drivebays, regardless or not on the placement of the graphics-card powerplugs. If it doesn't have a very good solution for airflow/cooling, there WILL be temp-problems and associated problems. Too often have I seen the result of a high-power system stuffed into too small a case without adequate airflow to cool the components. We're talking system slowdowns (the Core2-family will start to automatically lower their speed when they get too hot), crashes/system instability, broken components, video-anomalies/artifacts, cracked chips on the vidcards, broken CPU's, degraded harddrive-performance/disk-crashes etc. Heat is the number two killer of computers, only surpassed by the sometimes stupidity of their users  Remember also that for the $260 of the Killer NIC, you can get a very good case with lots of space and cooling. The Kandalf LCS is about 270ish USD when I last checked on Tigerdirect, plus it's a liquid-cooled system which also happens to be easy to build. There's also the fan-cooled Antec P180/P182 and the Nine Hundred-cases, which all have very good solutions when it comes to heat-management and airflow. Might be worth it to check these, too. Have so far been unable to find any really good pics of the LX-W with hardware mounted, so I might be way out in the fields yelling for moose again :D If you have some images of the case and more info about it, I'd love to see them. About the RAM: For maximum speed and efficiency of the system, make sure that you get as fast RAM as your motherboard can support. Little use of having an insane CPU, Graphics-cards and such things when your RAM is about as slow as a stunned snail glued to a mountain.
  5. Excellent! Can't wait to see the finished product!
  6. Very interesting, indeed. From the other forums I frequent, there's been reports both ways. Some experience a LOT smoother sailings in general, others have increased BSOD-frequency and lower framerates. Of course, that's why it's still in Beta =) Will be very interesting to install the finished patches to see how it impacts performance on my rig at home.
  7. How could I miss this post?? Excellent work, and a surefire download to get.
  8. Pardon me, but I'll be extremely blunt here: The thing is, the mods SHOULDN'T actually have to ban anyone, if people would just bloody behave and follow the rules (this post here breaks pretty much all of them, I know). People are too edgy, too confrontional and too stubborn to look at an issue from other sides then their own. And WHEN a mod steps in, what happens? Yep, pointless threads like this one filled with mostly bitching and whining, and like children that can't get exactly what they want when they want it (aka I want this and this and that over there, and I want it NOW!"). Someone got banned because they were out of line? That's forum life. Let me call Whine Moan Moan for a Whaaambulance. Too bad. Accept it, learn from it, and move the hell on. :ranting:
  9. Or as I like to say: Eagles may soar, but weasels doesn't get sucked into air-intakes :megalol:
  10. Agree on that one, yeah. Would be very interesting to see
  11. At first I wasn't even sure if I should write a reply in this post, and I'm aware that I might be stepping on some toes here, but I couldn't resist. So here goes. Why does this thread even exist (yes, I know that I'm adding to it by answering)? Not to play a mod or anything (I thank whatever gods I have left that I'm not, since I'd go postal 18 times per day), but is forum-moderation discussable? Last time I checked, the Internet, and this forum, wasn't a democracy, and freedom of speech doesn't exist in a private forum like this actually is. You can say what you want, but don't expect to not have a mod drop a 2000lbs JDAM on you if you break the rules. That's the way of things. Yes, frustrations are easy to come by. As all of us know, there's frustrations all around us in general and in Lock On more specifically. Sucky day + stress + being edgy from lack of sleep/sex/food/beer/good weather/money/peace&quiet/whatever + forum-post read the wrong way or written the wrong way = mental Kaboomery. Many, myself included, aren't always on-topic and constructive when posting stuff, and sometimes we push the envelope too hard. Sometimes we also fire off broadsides randomly because we're angry. For that we get a slap over the hands, or in some cases: a boot to the head (aka ban). Unfair? That depends on the point of view. In the end, what we as users of this forum actually feel about getting banned/having other people getting banned/general rules/forum moderation is, quite frankly, irrelevant. The mods/owners make the rules, and when we signed up we accepted the terms of use and thus also the rules as they are. The general feel of the forum has lately become, at least to me, more hostile and on-edge. People have strong opinions about how and what direction both LO:FC and BS should take, which doesn't always coincide with what other members, or the devs/mods feel. Thus triggering angry responses and in some cases flaming. Even though we don't NEED to do this, we sometimes do because of frustration. And get banned for it. Sometimes with reason, sometimes without (to us, that is). My point is pretty much this (I'm long-winded, I know. Someone tell me to shut the hell up): That we get banned/get warnings is our own damn fault, and there's not much to do about it than to step away from the computer when/if anger/frustration grow to uncontrollable proportions. Nothing good will come of it. Bitching about it is about as useful, as I've said earlier, as taking a piss in your pants in the dead of winter to keep warm. Those things that are less important to 90% of the people that fly are quite possibly the 90% of the things that will allow ED to give out patches/new software. If you were the Boss who has to answer to the shareholders, what would you pick? Spending money you don't neccesarily have, or making money? Besides, are you so sure of how easy it is to fix these issues?
  12. Too volatile since it'll go boom when it comes into contact with oxygene.
  13. Damn nice work!!! Any chance of seeing these, and for example the NASAMS-system in BS?
  14. Also know that the B52 use a water-injection-system. No idea why, though.
  15. The Harriers use water for cooling, as far as I know. Without it, the Pegasus-engine would say byebye pretty fast in a hover =)
  16. Good luck to the combatants! :pilotfly:
  17. I know from my AF-days here in Norway that it was quite possible to use the GPS to align the INS (Unless I'm wrong, it was done on some of the RS15-Vipers), but that it's not an oft-used procedure. In the case of the RNoAF-Viperpilots, standard SOP is to start the alignment of the INS just after SEC/BUC-testing (unless I remember COMPLETELY wrong, that is). Good thing about this is that the groundcrew get adequate time to do the checks they need to. If they do things otherwise on carriers, though, is something I can't say anything about. I simply don't know :) I would think that because the carrier is a moving platform, aligning the INS to where the carrier was when you took off an hour 30 ago might be a tad awkward when you're low on fuel and shot to hell :P
  18. I've read through this thread and also done a bit of research on my own, but I've yet to find evidence, in this thread or other places, for the missile's existence in an operational enviroment (aka hung under the wing and used by a frontline Russian/Soviet Su-27-squadron). The R-27 exists. That's undeniable. The seeker-head exists. That's undeniable. The R-27AE exists and is in use, or have been in use, on the other hand, IS deniable. There's no proof, as all other weapons depicted in this thread are either captives, dummies or other versions of the R-27. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the range of a missile seeker-head has less to do with the missile-type it's bolted onto than a cow has similarities to a fish.
  19. And the Oscar goes to.......*drumroll* Glowing_Amraam! *the crowd goes wild* Absolutely mindblowingly good!
  20. Personally, that WildTangent's software doesn't work with Vista is a GOOD thing, as it's usually a bloated mess of software. Besides, it's not Microsofts fault that devs worldwide cannot make their own products compatible with the new systems. That being said, I do have to ask when this article was posted. I've been running Vista since release (yep, I'm insane), and haven't had any issues with either small downloadable games, game-demos or full games on Vista yet (The exception being having to upgrade the StarForce-drivers, but that's not a big issue). I know that there were huge problems with the LUA-system back in Beta2 and RC1 and 2, but I've not seen many issues with it with the RTM. Which soundcard do you have?
  21. *drool* Yep, if it's possible and if it's done, I'd absolutely love it. Hell, doing a lowlevel-run from the airbases on the Kola peninsula and down to Bodø should be one hell of a ride, dodging mountains, powerlines and trying to evade the radars on the mountaintops
  22. Both the english and russian sites work fine for me. Might have been a temporary hiccup.
  23. I beg to differ, my friend =) I've seen screenshots and vids from the FSX-world that rival this, and the FPS-rate are indeed still playable even with that level of detail. It does, however, depend heavily on hardware-config, tweaks and addons.
