FLIR is bad, just me, realistic, or will be improved?
Kharrn replied to truebrit's topic in DCS: AH-64D
@Smashy Ask a soldier in 2025 about his/her "state of the art" equipment from 2021 and you will most surely get the answer: "its trash" (maybe with rare exceptions ^^) Every equipment fielded (maybe expect in special forces) is already (kind of) "out of date" compared to the current tech you can get from the market or which is available as prototype. At least thats from my experience in the german armes forces. But most armies all over the world deal with kind of old equiment, mainly cause of monetary reasons (afaik). Arms/ defense industry and the whole process of demand to distribution (of equipment to the armed forces) is loooooooooooooong. At least in most of the cases during "peacetime". @macedk +1 on the topic: as LooseSeal already stated, OP is looking on the IHADSS projection of the TADS. I testes it in comparison to the normal NV-Goggle. It seems like if you "zoom in", the IHADSS is simulated picture-in-picture while the NVG is just an overlay. So NVG zoomed will be pretty clear with some artifacts building due to texture anti-aliasing i think. IHADSS zoom will get blurry pretty fast. BUT zooming with your "eye" isnt possible in RL and ingame its just a little help, especially since we dont have binos for the A10 drivers Also zooming on a picture that is some mere inches in front of your eye (IHADSS) will render that pretty blurry too Just my 2 cents thinking about the OPs "problem". cant reproduce, always worked for me. TADS and PNVS both move (swivel) when in use. AFAIK and from my testing PNVS will be in a "stowed" position though, until selected by a crewmember via the NVS MODE switch. (TADS can also go to stow mode when deactivated via WPN page -> UTIL -> TADS stow or TADS power off) From the quick start manual: @Dannyvandelft TADS can also be used by the Pilot as NVS "source", on the collective control. You will "take it away" from the CPG though. CPG can also use the PNVS as NVS while using TADS via the TEDAC

cannot reproduce and missing track file Can't get George to fire

Please provide a (hopefully short) track reply if you can reproduce the problem easily. Without a trackfile it is close to impossible to be of help in this particular topic, thy. -
What produces enough heat for the FLIR to pick up?
Kharrn replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in DCS: AH-64D
short answer: depends on a lot of things i think this cant be answered easily and especially without in-depth knowledge of these systems. also i hope we are talking only ingame here and not real life (cause this might throw up sensitivity concerns)... IMHO we should wait until ED fleshes out the totally new and still work in process FLIR system K -
No problem and good to hear Keep in mind that especially for LOAL HI shots you need a lot of distance to the target! see my link postet earlier. Quote from AvroLanc`s post: Dont know if target data transmission from ground forces will come with the inclusion of data systems (think in the AH64D its called Battle Area Management (BAM)), so the only way atm is to put in 8digit grid coords by hand. As for your question, my workflow for "remote attack" is, that i will do everything from the Pilot seat. George will usualy have the gun during that time. Pilot seat -> contact JTAC and get grid -> put in a new Target Point with JTACs target grid coord and put the point for ACQ (to get N range to target and thereby time of flight and the direction to target) -> align Apache to target and be in-range (and not too close, depending on traj) -> WAS hellfires and choose desired LOAL trajectory and the correct laser code (standard DCS AI JTAC most times on 1688) -> tell JTAC to lase target, wait for response (for DCS AI JTAC call SPOT and IN to get the response "cleared hot") -> fire away Note: from my experience it is also good to know the JTAC position to get GTL (gun target line, or in thise case Laser to Target line) to know which part (roughly) of the target will get lased; DCS AI JTAC will also switch targets (calling "switch") if by the mission designer the correct FAC task has been set up in the mission editor. i surely forgot something Greetings K

FLIR is bad, just me, realistic, or will be improved?
Kharrn replied to truebrit's topic in DCS: AH-64D
yeah tank looks pretty hot, so i guess (from my experience) it was driving around/beeing operational for some time. But in comparison, it even says in the description of the sight "Recognition range 2300M for vehicle targets"... that is not much compared to the TADS we have in DCS As long as vehicles are not moving/shooting/beeing operated, it depends a whole lot on the outside weather/temp/humidity and on the inherit vehicle systems. Remember that the enemy will also try to mask IR signature in RL (as well as silhouette etc, but i think we wont see dug in stuff or camo nettings ingame soon xD). But as stated already, the new FLIR system is WiP so i guess we will see some tuning in that. let the AI drive around some time and you will see the vehicles are building up quite some heat. though for mission design it would be nice to give them some kind of "inertial heat" when they spawn, especially for stationary vehicles. see above. A tank in a live operation in RL would try to mask signature A LOT. Afaik, most post 1970 tanks have inbuild heat dispersion systems for the engine compartment (heat is disposed to the rear over multiple vents); then there is anti radiation coting on modern tanks; and special camouflage netting like the barracuda called "multispectral protection" Lets just assume they do that in DCS at this moment, until ED fine tunes the new FLIR system -
How i Shak in DCS AH64D at the moment.. i am stilly nooby... lol

I want to apologize for my immature behaviour in calling you trolling, see my PN. Just to clarify or prevent misunderstanding: In my response, i was referring to Sarge55`s question about the term "shak" and Floyd1212`s response. Because i was interested in the origin of the term, i looked for it and found that interesting post i linked in my answer. I am not from the USA and english is not my native language. I never heard of the term in sports and i could not look it up by a google search, though i am willing to learn! Like i linked before, in those phrases "shack" seems to be used as dead center hit on target (like bullseye) or for modern bomber guys or targeteers: "zero CEP" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_error_probable But i dont know how the OP meant the term "Shak" in the topic of this thread.... Greetings K -

correct as-is Today's patch - "Initial work on velocity hold submode"
Kharrn replied to av8orDave's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Thank you very much @Raptor9 for giving input on this. I was just looking up the different conditions to post it, but always better to hear it from a sme I think some people did not understand so far that pushing "Hold Mode" left/right has different functions depending on flight conditions even though it was mentioned earlier... so again, thy! K -
true indeed. think we are all in for a learning ride at this time lets hope they get that fixed and George will be more "responsive". K

just tested a 3rd time on Mariana Weapon Range and worked like butter sauce also LOAL only with using "consent to fire" (no weapons free needed this time). see track attached. Be advised that i used my keyboard controls to fly because im just on my laptop without any hardware. To note: flying and hovering with keyboard works - its all about small inputs K AH64D_MAR_GeorgeHellfireTest.trk

Braking a huge lance here for George, not wanting to be rude or so @OP but i think you do not fully understand the constraints that have to be met to fire hellfires (or also for other weapons but then constraints are a lot lighter, e.g. AZIMUTH LIM on the gun). So i still think - even though i cant prove without a track or video - that you did something wrong or at least not "fully correct". Not saying George works 100% total corract, but it is still very much WiP. To my testing, GeorgeAI works pretty well when using hellfires. Just tested on marianas map (weapon range quick start mission); loaded up 4 Hellfires on each inner station (cause you spawn with only 6 total); flew to the target range (about 4km out) and went into a hover. Was pretty high, about 500-600 feet AGL to have a good up-down look on the targets; let George fire 4 missiles in LOBL, no problems all hit; switched LOAL-DIR, ** he killed two targets; switched to LOBL, gave him "consent to fire" and he and killed another; switched to LOAL-LO ** and he killed another. **Side note: For LOAL (DIR nad LO) i did put George to "free fire" (green) and nothing happened, then gave him "consent to fire" and he rifled a missile with him lasing 2 seconds later. Worked therefor nearly as intended. BUT: like i said, you have to meet all the weapon constraints! A PYLON LIM will prevent George from firing (tested) - as well as a BAL LIM i assume (not tested). And if you fire LOBL wait for missile SKR to detect laser energy (solid and big "missile contraints box") and then give him consent to fire. for more info please see page 299-301 in the quick start manual https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/upload/iblock/ae5/1gklim4idv5p6s46zmgduj55g4m47mlo/DCS_AH-64D_Quick_Start_Manual_EN.pdf Another thread that has been startet on this particular topic... And a possible workaround if you wanna fire Hellfires as Pilot while GeorgeAI is lasing the target: On the main topic: we are still in an very early stage of EA, so more training missions will very likely come in the future.

sry cant download and watch the track atm. Though i just tried on the marianas map (weapon range quick start mission). loaded up 4 Hellfires on each inner station (cause you spawn with only 6 total). Went to the target range (about 4km out) into a hover. was pretty high, about 500-600 feet AGL. Let George fire 4 missiles in LOBL, no problems. switched LOAL DIR and killed two targets. switched to LOBL and killed another. switched to LOAL LO and killed another. BUT: you have to meet all the weapon constraints!!! a PYLON LIM will prevent George from firing - as well as a BAL LIM i assume. And if you fire LOBL wait for missile SKR to detect laser energy (big "box") and then give him consent to fire. For LOAL i did put George to "free fire" (green) and nothing happened, then gave him "consent to fire" and he rifled a missile with lasing 2 seconds later (as intended). Remark: how do you look at the WPN page to check if George WASed the missiles? do you switch seats? because if you look at YOUR WPN page as pilot you will only see if you - as the pilot - WASed (checkered) the corresponding weapon! possible workaround for your "problem" see here

cannot reproduce and missing track file What's going on Mr George from apache?
Kharrn replied to sanc2775's topic in DCS: AH-64D
FYI, in the TADS video you can see "MSL NOT RDY" all the time. even when the missile (Hellfire) is not rdy, GeorgeAI will say "engaging" atm but cant, because...well... the missile is not rdy. To see what is happening you can try to switch to the CPG and look at the WPN page. I guess GeorgeAI might have put the hellfires to RF instead of SAL or there is a hung store or a missing hellfire on the wing (there are already multiple threads about this error). For hellfires you can WAS missiles as pilot as soon as GeorgeAI is lasing the target and engage it yourself with weapons trigger (dont forget the trigger guard!). K -
AFAIK only tilt-rotor or civilian copters are really faster then most military copters. From OSINT search: also from german wiki (roughly translated): Considering the weight and possible loadout, this is pretty fast IMHO. @pii Unless you are kidding and i didnt notice: Speed comparison to the rediculous weapon usage of AI ground targets (auto aim; auto lead; ultra fast weapon traverse) is just one thing: wrong K

correct as-is Today's patch - "Initial work on velocity hold submode"
Kharrn replied to av8orDave's topic in DCS: AH-64D
I think what pepobsh meant is, that he was trying to get into a "hover mode" while flying with forward speed. Flying with forward airspeed and pressing left on the "force trim/hold modes" will enter AT "submode" velocity hold - at least as far as i can understand this system atm. Would be great of ED to put some more documentary on this or some inside tester to shed more on a "how to" But i guess we will see docs and videos on the system as soon as it is fully fleshed out during early access. Keep in mind that features can come in buggy or not fully functional during this state of development - my 2 cents on this. K -
correct as-is Today's patch - "Initial work on velocity hold submode"
Kharrn replied to av8orDave's topic in DCS: AH-64D
From the Quick Start Manual: and keep in mind the different flight "postures" (dont wanna say attitude ^^) are needed to engage the different AT modes. refer to this post for mor info: And please check FLT page on MPD how the horizontal stabilator is behaving when you get the "nose down" problem. Maybe there is the problem with the automatic behaviour of it. So there are a lot of systems in play. Thy! K -
Cant look for or do much if there is no trackfile attached. Your screenshot shows RF selected (like you noted), so the missile cant be rdy since this mode is not implemented so far... at least afaik. and we cant "see" what you did or what happened before without proper screenshots... or better a trackfile! K Did a quick test with different Hellfiee loadouts. Could fire all of them in SAL without any problems.

gtg to work soon but can port it to Caucasus tomorrow if noone is fester For the JTAC to lase targets as prerequisits: he has to have Line of Sight (LoS) to the target and the equipment (not all vehicles/units can lase). Also he needs to be in weapon range for some reason because that seems to be his/her laser range - to my knowledge at least.... (in DCS). So it all comes down to how the JTAC is placed and set up by the mission creator (e.g. FAC group engage or FAC enroute...) You cant "order" a JTAC to lase a target - at least not the standard ED JTACs. Dont know much about...scipted ones though. K

FYInterset i just put together a quick mission on my "testbed". It is on Nevada Map, if you do not own it, i recommend buying...ok jsut kidding If you don't own it, i can port it to Caucasus or Marianas if need be. Choose the slot saying something with "BEATTY ...and JTAC training". It is a hot start on ground. There is one A-FAC (Kiowa AI) on 127.5 and 2x JTAC each on 30 FM. (put it in briefing notes for fast reference). be advised this is WiP and JTACs/FAC sometimes do not work as intended -.- Greetings K AH64D_KHR_NV_test training scenario.miz
