Got a link? I'm honestly curious.

Apparently I've somehow been living under a rock for the past week and a half, and missed this announcement! Congrats on the upcoming release, can't wait to fly it!

The other reason might be that you fly the final approach at around 340 km/h, but the actual touchdown occurs at a slower speed (270 km/h or so), after bleeding off speed in the round out and flare.

Whoops, you're right! I had it backwards; sorry about that. Good reference, I've edited my post. -
Tankers - Operational Speeds & Manoeuvers

NATO standards are: 275 KIAS or Mach .78, whichever is lower. However there are also specific procedures for our beloved A-10, since it's so slow: 15,000 MSL, 220 KIAS For the question of whether to join on the left or the right wing, that depends on the air force. NATO standard procedure is for aircraft to join on the tanker's left wing, in echelon left formation. Then after fueling they move to the right wing in echelon right. US Military procedure is the exact opposite (for some reason)... Aircraft join on the right, and move to the left after getting fuel. -
Jetstream! Great series on Canadian CF-18 pilot training

Turns out Captain Shamus "Carny" Allen is now the lead solo for the Snowbirds demo team! I just saw them at the Abbotsford airshow this past weekend, but sadly he wasn't there with them. They flew a slightly lopsided 8-ship routine. Which was still amazing! Anyway, I felt a little star-struck when I heard his name over the PA. :P http://www.rcaf-arc.forces.gc.ca/en/snowbirds/bios/shamus-allen.page -
How a water bottle could've killed me - near misses in aviation
NoJoe replied to Pocket Sized's topic in Chit-Chat
In the US, at least: 91.15 Dropping Objects: "No pilot in command of a civil aircraft may allow any object to be dropped from that aircraft in flight that creates a hazard to persons or property. However, this section does not prohibit the dropping of any object if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property." So, it's not entirely illegal... :D -
Thanks Steve! I have to say, this is the most fun I've ever had with a campaign! Really great job on it!

The lineup card for Mission 3 has the transit at 12k MSL, then you drop down to 6.4K' MSL for Steerpoint 7 (just south of the farms), and further down to 5.9K' MSL for the primary and secondary targets. Steerpoint 7 keeps you south of the farms, so you're not overflying them anyway. Still, 12' AGL is probably a typo. :) I'd guess it's supposed to be 12K' AGL. That's what Mission 2's briefing specifies. Though Mission 4 has us directly overhead the farms as our IP at 8K' MSL, and specifies to overfly no lower than 6.5K' MSL (about 1,500' AGL). Maybe the Russian Special Forces have moved their MANPADS out of the area by then, so the only threat is small-arms fire? That sounds like the most logical explanation to me.
-
Probably, yeah. That sounds about right for keeping us out of MANPAD range.
-
I noticed that even after the update it's still not clear what altitude should be safe for overflight of the Farms. In the briefing for Mission 3 (both in-game and in the PDF) it reads: "Intel has also confirmed that The Farms are indeed providing shelter to Russian Special Forces and should therefore be overflown no lower than 12’ AGL." I sure can't argue with that! I'd be hitting trees if I were any lower! ;)

Where is the terrain self shadowing??
NoJoe replied to Ala12Rv-watermanpc's topic in DCS: Nevada Test and Training Range
Thanks for posting those timelapses Nate, those are great! -
In the real plane it holds checklists and things. Though I like the imagery of an A-10 held together with rope! :D

I don't think it's false advertising; I think it's just an alpha. As in "may not contain all of the features that are planned for the final version." I'd wait until Eagle Dynamics release the full version of DCS World 2.0 before worrying about false advertising. -

I did some testing, and the terrain shadows don't show up for me either. My guess is that they're just not yet implemented in the public alpha we have at the moment. -
NTTR info and mission by the 476
NoJoe replied to Stuka's topic in DCS: Nevada Test and Training Range
Awesome! Thanks Stuka, and I'm really looking forward to the mission. I had started the process of populating the various targets in the NTTR with static objects, but I've been hoping someone more professional (you guys) would come along and do it right. -

The airliner-in-the-field-of-view-while-taking-the-photo is probably the correct reason, but I prefer to assume it's the top of a secret underground base. Owned by Elon Musk. :P -

How about Dubai? :P But yeah, this map is amazing! I took some time to tour around in the Huey before hopping in the P-51D to go check out some of the surrounding areas. Fantastic job!

I doubt the Hornet is "on hold"; I'm sure they're still working on it. But by its nature a lot of the work would likely by under-the-hood stuff that doesn't lend itself well to screenshots or videos. I'm sure we'll hear more when ED are ready to tell us about it. (And I can't wait! I've been looking forward to the Hornet for a LONG time!!) :)

Hi Mike, That mission file is simply named "Su-25T.miz". Open the mission editor from the main menu, and click on the little open file icon in the upper left. From there just click on the Su-25T folder in the left pane of the window, choose "Quickstart", and select "Su-25T.miz". I'd recommend you do a Save-As so you don't accidentally overwrite the original mission, but from there you can simply select the player's airplane (the red "A" south of the targets), and change the country to USA, then select A-10A as the airplane type. You'll then need to choose your loadout as normal (it defaults to empty). Be aware that all the targets are Georgian, so you'll be attacking friendly units. But as long as that doesn't bother you, you should be good to go! :)

I just heard from my old Arabic teacher; he says he "has a hunch" it's Egyptian Arabic, but he'll check with some family members who would know better. He himself is Iraqi, and doesn't recognize the spelling as Iraqi. So that starts to narrow it down! :)
-
That's great, I'd love to have one to hang up on my wall! Arabic trivia: it's a form of the word for "airplane", which is roughly transliterated to "Tah-iraa" depending on dialect. The word you have is roughly "At-Tahyaa-roon", meaning "the pilots" or just "pilots". In standard Arabic it'd be "At-Tahyaa-reen", so your sign is probably from somewhere other than Saudi Arabia, but I'm not familiar enough to pick out which dialect it's from. I should ask my former Arabic teacher!

When flying perpendicular to a steady wind, the smoke from guns and engines appears to be trailing behind the aircraft along its ground track, rather than along its path through the air. The effect is that the smoke doesn't trail straight back along the aircraft's longitudinal axis, but instead at an angle. Contrails do appear to move correctly in wind, so an easy way to view this is to fly with the A-10 at a high enough altitude to form contrails, perpendicular to the wind, and then fire the gun. The gun smoke trails behind at an angle. In the attached screenshot there is a strong wind from the left side of the picture (from the plane's right). I've also attached a very short track showing this. The wind is at 30m/s to make it easier to see. [EDIT] The title should probably be something more like "Engine and gun smoke drifts incorrectly in wind". WindSmokeTrack.trk
