I think my brain just fell over. :P I am very much looking forward to the MiG, but waiting will make the release that much sweeter.

Are there any piloting careers that are good for introverts?
NoJoe replied to Zakatak's topic in Military and Aviation
Zakatak, Just to throw my 2 cents in, many night cargo flying jobs are done single-pilot. There's really not a lot of social interaction involved, except at base before takeoff and ATC in between (though that interaction probably doesn't count). The catch is that in order to meet the minimums for such a cargo job, you'd have to build time somehow. If you're rich you could rent or fly your own plane, but the traditional paths are either as a first officer at a regional or as a flight instructor, both of which involve quite a lot of social interaction. Flight instruction especially is exhausting because you have to be "on" 100% of the time, either keeping your student from crashing, or otherwise watching and communicating with them. I'm an introvert (in the sense that I "recharge" by being away from people), and flight instruction leaves me basically empty of energy at the end of the week. -
New graphics engine certainly is a large step toward that.

Sorry, I have to bite. :P What has ED released over the last several years? 1. Ka-50 Blackshark. An older but still relatively modern helicopter. 2. A-10C. A modern airplane. 3. P-51D. A WW2-era plane. 4. They're working on a new graphics engine. 5. They'll be releasing at least one new map (Nevada). 6. They're working on the F/A-18C Hornet. An older but still relatively modern plane. 7. They've only recently taken up the mantle of the DCS WW2 project since the original developers fell through (though ED has said they've hired much of that staff, so there should be "minimal" impact to their other projects). With the exception of the P-51D, it sounds like they're doing pretty much exactly what you posted there. Modern aircraft, new map. :) The 3rd party guys are the ones doing the rest of the WW2, korea, and cold war aircraft.

At least in terms of gunnery accuracy I've found it helps to: 1. Make sure you have a relaxed grip on the stick so you can make smooth inputs. I find as I tense up my aim goes all over the place and I end up just wasting bullets and opportunities! 2. Track the target for half a second or so before firing to make sure I'm actually on-target. This kinda goes with number 1. Seems in general the more I slow myself down and try to be smooth, the quicker and better my shooting gets. Actually that seems to be true for a lot of things in life... Huh. Favorite color: the cobalt blue of taxiway lights. :D

A stall happens when the angle of the wing to the oncoming airflow (the "angle of attack") gets too high, independent of airspeed. So you can indeed stall the wing at high speeds by pulling lots of G. :)

I for one appreciate the livestreams that have been done by Bluedrake and others. No need to jump on the bandwagon of bashing them for lack of familiarization with the aircraft. I'm just excited to see the MiG in action!

I agree, and I think I'm most interested in the MiG because of the challenge. It doesn't seem like going head-to-head with Eagles or Fulcrums will be much of an option simply because of the wide gap in technology and capability, so we Fishbed drivers will have to get clever. :) Though to be honest I am looking forward to simply learning to fly the thing, without worrying about weapons at first. I sounds like it's quite the handful to keep in a straight line!

That's what they do in real life. The vortex is basically a sideways tornado of air that is spinning quickly enough for centrifugal force to cause a low pressure area inside. This low pressure therefore causes a drop in temperature, and if the air cools to its dewpoint the moisture inside condenses out as cloud. This cloud is what makes the vortex visible to us. Real picture showing the same thing: http://jazzroc.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/tip-vortices.jpg?w=700 On topic: I'm loving these shots and can't wait to take the MiG for a spin, especially to use the radar!

I loved GalCiv 2, probably at least partly because I was reading the Foundation series at the time. Being able to play out a version of that story was pretty spectacular. Looking forward to this one!

I doubt it'd be a matter of days... Think of all the objects that would have to be modeled and placed onto the terrain! And even if that C6 technology could include buildings in its mesh, how would the sim know what's a destructible building vs. indestructible terrain? There's a lot more to map making than just terrain elevation data and textures.

Woohoo, just got my Dora key! Now just gotta wait for the Bf-109K... :)

The All Things Combined Past Release Date Discussions

Heh, good point! I can't wait to fly this MiG. Maybe then I'll finally defeat that AI FW-190. :P -
The All Things Combined Past Release Date Discussions
NoJoe replied to statrekmike's topic in MiG-21Bis
I think he was talking about the difference between the new rendering engine (EDGE), and the old. Not the new MiG artwork compared to the old, as you posted. -
I just bagged my first MiG-15... In the A-10C. :P It doesn't stand a chance against 30mm!
-
I've set up an AI fight of 2 F/A-18Cs (armed with AIM-9s) that both got shot down by a single FW-190. :P It's like the jets don't know how to keep their speed up; they just get sucked into a slow turning fight that they eventually lose.

Runway Marker lines Disapeared??
NoJoe replied to The_Nephilim's topic in Video Corruption and Related Card Issues
The last screenshot of the Nvidia control panel shows your Anisotropic Filtering is set to off. I'd bet that's what's causing the blurry runway textures. Try turning it on and see if that helps. [EDIT] To add, Anisotropic Filtering makes textures more crisp when they're viewed at a low angle (such as the runway as seen from the cockpit), and they'll have almost no impact on performance at all. I'd recommend setting AF to 8x at least. I don't think your 590GTX would have any trouble with 8x. -
The reporter in the video mentions that it was flying over an area where the armed groups use 122mm Grad rockets fired from technicals. She points out that they aren't very accurate, and that the most likely explanation for the missing airplane is that it went down in bad weather. So yes, the possibility of it being shot down was raised, but even the reporter seems to find that very unlikely.

Hawt. I can't wait to go shoot down some B-52s with this!

Have a great mini-vacation! That picture came from Eagle Dynamics' Facebook page.

No pilots...? I can clearly see them, near the back of the canopy. :) Awesome shot, by the way! Looks ... actiony!

The post on Facebook said later this year, not necessarily late this year. Those screenies look amazing by the way!

Wow guys, this thread is really ... out of this world. ... I'll show myself out. :P

I pen an open letter to Eagle Dynamics
NoJoe replied to O_Smiladon's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Three words: "The Final Countdown" (2). :D Especially now that DCS WW2 won't be a standalone separate install. And yes, a big thank you to ED for keeping these warbirds alive! -
If this is a real thing, can someone find it and add it to the list? :P http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1829751&postcount=139
