I am using the same base stations I used with my old Index. I think they are version 2's but I can't remember.

LOL, interesting! I have to admit that even after a year, I still tweak mine. Here is what I have set now but note that after a few beers I do sometimes move a few points negative on the right eye to -2 or -3 to clear things up again. Also, since recently getting the 4090 I have also discovered how well enabling Smart Smoothing in Pitool improves things!
-
All I can say is that the OP is absolutely, 100% correct! Now I need to re-tweak everything! 4090 is a beast!

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
Slammin replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I bought the same card and it arrives tomorrow. So excited!! If the issue is due to cramped cases, I won't have that problem with my big refrigerator case (TT View 71) and since the card is hybrid, I may even vertical mount again if it lessens the bend in the cable. -
AMD 5800X3D, the new King for flight simulators?
Slammin replied to maxsin72's topic in Virtual Reality
So in other words, the answer is yes, right? He will see a great improvement in areas where the CPU struggled, but not so much in areas where the CPU wasn't struggling. I'd say the upgrade is a no-brainer for almost anyone playing DCS that is staying with AM4 but needs a boost. I say 'almost anyone' because in my case, I cannot justify replacing a 5950 with a 5800x3D. A 4090 is my next upgrade. -
Ya know, I love my 8KX. Granted, I'd be very reluctant to ever recommend it to anyone I don't know. Reason? I've had it for what, a year and am still finding ways to use it, and tweak it. What is depressing is being able to adjust it to a clarity that I have not seen on any other HMD that I've owned. The letdown is that my 3090 cannot run it at those settings with every game I play. The reason I still love it is that I can still find very acceptable settings that look, run great. I suspect other 8KX owners know exactly what I'm talking about.

I guess I'm the lucky one. As soon as Apache was available on the non-Beta, I switched and never looked back. I am a little dismayed by some folks screaming bloody murder at the devs over this though. If you are running the beta so that you can provide useful feedback to the devs, hats off to ya. But some of the responses here sound like people are consulting their attorney or something!

I just want my 4090! -
Granted, the other stuff does matter, to some degree. The OP's declaration is still 100. Yet, I still cannot even find a 4090, so who am I to talk, lol!!

OP said: "For DCS (in particular), all I should care about from a HW point of view is single core clock speed and GPU rasterization performance, right?" I say correct, in the context of your other statements. Absolutely correct! Then OP said: "If I can get the best single core speed, best rasterizing GPU, decent amount of memory, that’s about the best I can hope for . . . " And then things changed. 3D cache via AMD's implementation on the CPU kinda moves the goal posts already as far as current tech goes, so, as folks have responded; although it is basically as simple as the OP stated, future-looking is still the best approach IMHO. But OP, you are correct, today, but I also detect leanings of a Red vs Green discussion in the making Hope not, lol!

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?

I noticed that as well and assume is due to reduction of contention. More headroom now due to the faster GPU processing keeping flows moving. -
Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
Slammin replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I guess because we keep injecting VR into the discussion, things start drifting (even though this is the VR sub). So, for those that say 3090 to 4090 is not worth it, or that it may not benefit, are probably not using VR. VR makes my 3090 the bottleneck and I suspect that would still be the case even if I had a lessor CPU. I am specifically talking DCS too. -
My guess would be that the DLL (can't remember the name) has been updated. Basically, and I'm going off foggy memory, but you can elect to install the required DLL locally (in each game directory), or globally. I know I installed mine globally and have not had any issues with any of the games I run. Also, my HMD is not WMR, so I may be way off here since I have not read the instructions for installing/enabling OpenXR for a WMR HMD.

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
Slammin replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I have a RoG Thor 1200w PSU. I learned long ago to not skimp on quality or wattage when it comes to the PSU. I tinker and am a long-time OC'er and always strive to get the most from my hardware. The raw power of a 4090 should be a delight for my VR needs. Even with DCS. -

I'm trying to find a 4090, lol! The local Microcenter has 7 Zotacs but I want the FE mostly, or Asus or MSI. -
Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
Slammin replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I retired from my 35 year job a couple months before the 3xxx were released. I wound up getting a 3080 FE and a Aorus 3090 right off the bat, and then got an EVGA 3090 Hybrid and a 3090 FTW3 Ultra from the EVGA waiting list. All at MSRP. I feel I will definitely be getting a 4090 since my rig and PSU can handle it already. Basically, I have a 3080 and at least one 3090 I would let go really cheap now to anyone interested. I'll be getting rid of another 3090 after I get my 4090. -
Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
Slammin replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I'm not convinced things will be so linear. My 3090 seems to be the biggest bottleneck right now, not my 5950x, so if a 4090 can present my CPU as the bottleneck with the settings I want to use, I think I'm good with that. This is with an 8Kx, but I'd imagine my viewpoint would be different using a less demanding HMD. Either way, we have all been chasing this for a long time now, but from my perspective, I am hopeful because DCS ran smooth as glass @ 5120x1440 in 2D, even on a 10+ year old CPU. I am so ready for a 4090, but will await the specific reviews. -

PIMAX Monster 12k, Eyes tracking, INSIDE OUT and Much more !!
Slammin replied to ICARIVS's topic in Virtual Reality
Rough crowd here, lol!! I've owned Odyssey, Odyssey+, Vive, Index, and now 8KX. I can't wait to trade up to the 12K. I did follow Pimax since the first kickstarter and frankly, I was not impressed with their execution/support nightmare stories at all back then, hence me skipping all the way to 8KX. I do think they've come a long way from those days, and apparently they have learned from their mistakes. I got excellent support for the two times I've needed to contact them. I really don't care what they name a product and really only care about what the product will do for me and based on my experience with the 8KX, I am really excited for the 12K. I'll just wait for the reviews before pulling the trigger, as usual. -

I'm trading in my 8KX for the 12K as soon as I'm satisfied with the reviews. I may even wait for at least one revision too since I am totally fine with the 8KX for now, but I am totally excited for the 12K. -
Running Pimax 8Kx with 5950x, 3090 and 32GB Ram. I set PiTool SS to 2 and lately have been setting FOV to Small in PiTool. I use OpenXR, OpenXRToolkit and OpenComposite and run resolution 31xx by 31xx and though I have not checked to see what FPS I get, everything is sharp, crisp and smooth. I play DCS, FS2020 and IL-2 daily. If I set FOC to Normal, I back down the resolution a bit. My game settings are always in the Ultra-High values. Hope this helps.

I love VR and it seems like no matter how satisfied I am with it, I eventually get an itch, or some other 'thing' happens that makes me need/want to tweak again, and each time it just gets better for me.

AMD 5800X3D, the new King for flight simulators?
Slammin replied to maxsin72's topic in Virtual Reality
Good question. I wonder why they didn't choose the 5600X instead, actually. To me, the 5800X would seem to be the worst one to start with. I guess a quick review of the specs would answer that for me, but I'm lazy. I do know I avoided the 5800X when I built my rig due to heat concerns though. -

Really a no-brainer, BusPilot. Even though you would have an upgrade path (5900, 5950) on AM4, considering the age of those CPU's vs what's available now and in the not distant future, you basically run out of runway right out the gate. Reality is, a 3090, even in your current rig would/should convince you to go Intel at this juncture.
