Falcon127, I have not heard of any MSI notebooks that you can overclock the processor. Since you are in USA, I suggest giving Alienware a good look. Their warranty is outstanding. A lot of people complain about the price of Alienware but they have specials often and also you can haggle with the sales representative if you get one based in USA. Do NOT order online! There are threads on notebook review forum how to get good deals. Lets just say, I saved a bundle and got the exact machine I wanted by playing the game. Thank you, Monnie

Falcon127, Glad to help and thanks for the compliments. Have you thought about getting an Alienware? Which country are you in? I have had Sagers before and one disappointing factor is their warranty. They take forever and you must pay shipping BOTH ways. Good place to read up on both brands is: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ Thank you, Monnie

Faro06, Did you receive your titan yet? I am curious about the performance you are getting with it. Thank you, Monnie

Falcon, Which CPU were you considering with this model? As you well know, DCS World is very CPU dependent. Understand one thing about Sagers, they are built quite well but the user can NOT make any changes in the BIOS to overclock the CPU. So if you get the i7-3940XM which is unlocked, there is no way to increase the speed over 3.0ghz. These limitations are why I chose the laptop I did for my mobile flight/gaming. I have full access to all BIOS parameters just as one would have on a desktop. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Thank you, Monnie

Hello Everyone, Is there a way to have more textures on the mountains in the distance? Thank you, Monnie

+1 I went with a M18xR2, dual GTX 680m and i7-3920XM cpu. Could not be happier. Chews up DCS World. Ordered mine during "back to school time" and additional haggling got me a total of 24% off so basically $3600 with 4 year advanced warranty Plus on the M18xR2, you can overclock the CPU because the BIOS is unlocked. Currently running at 4.4ghz on all cores temps 60°C to 68°C. No need to overclock the GTX 680m's as they perform plenty for DCS M18xR2 does have a 18.3" screen compared to the 17.3" screen on the 6700 Only option that is nice on the 6700 is you can get a IPS RGB Monitor which I wish was an option for the M18xR2 Overclocked you can get: 40500 in 3D Mark Vantage 12500 in 3D Mark 11 Specs in my signature. Thank you, Monnie

Hello Everyone, She landed in pristine condition at home base Wednesday 08/29/2012. Loaded up US DVD 1109 for a test, ran extremely smooth. Off the next 7 days so I will get DCS world & 1.2.0 installed to report back.

Update, Just waiting on China to make more GTX680m GPU's. They use the same core(1344 cuda cores) as the GTX 670 desktop and they are selling like hotcakes. TSMC is not ramping up production Estimated delivery date is Sept.12th

Hello Everyone, I ordered the Alienware M18xR2 with the Intel i7-3920XM and nVidia GTX680m SLI. Once I get it, I will report back how well DCS A10C runs on it. I ordered some additional hardware to abduct my new Alien once it lands. 2 of these for RAID0 OCZ 256GB Vertex 4 2 of these for a total of 32GB Kingston HyperX 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory HyperX Plug n Play CL9 1 of these which I have not decided to use as a onboard recovery/backup or run Windows on it becuase it is only SATA2 Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive 1 of these Sony Optiarc Black 6X BD-R 2X BD-RE 8X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 6X BD-ROM 5.8MB Cache SATA 12.7mm Slot Blu-ray Writer BD-5850H-01 1 of these Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog Thank you, Monnie

Gentleman, Thank you for the input. EtherealN and Pyroflash, the machine I was looking at that enables overclocking as well as excellent cooling is the Alienware M18x R2. There are several retailers besides Dell/Alienware that ship internationally. unityole, This was my plan too. Thank you, Monnie
-
EtherealN, The laptop I am looking at provides a different heatsink for the XM processors to give extra cooling(three heat pipes instead of one). Also, they enable options in the BIOS to modify the settings to overclock the processors. Intel XTU application can also be used on the XM processors to change a few things too but, not total control over the settings. Combined with both of those the processors can be overclocked quite a bit. Some are getting 4.9ghz on the i7-2960XM Being DCS runs off of two threads, the other cores will not be taxed that much so overclocking two of the used cores should provide a healthy gain in performance without too much heat. Intel plans to release a i7-3940xm that will be 3.0ghz and 3.9ghz turbo There are rumors for a i7-3960XM that will be 3.3ghz and 3.9ghz turbo The laptop will be configured with nVidia GTX 680m SLI Thank you, Monnie

Hello Everyone, What are your opinions on a Intel i7-3920xm running at 4.5ghz? Enough for DCS? Thank you, Monnie

Finally in stock at my local stores. Bought two copies. One for main rig,one for a server. Plus it supports ED Monnie

Hello Everyone, I am thinking to build a server for DCS:A10-C at home. Will this connection be enough to offer the community a decent playing enviroment? Thank you, Monnie

Sounds like to me, "Jack of All Games" isn't doing Jack. DCS:A10 does not show up on Best Buy's site anywhere, Pre-order,In-Stock,Out of Stock, Nada If I performed my job and follow through in this way, I would be fired on the spot. Monnie

Projector vs 3 monitors: Immersion
MonnieRock replied to F2a's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hello, You caught me while I am still here. As for your monitor, I would have to do some research on it to find out what type of panel it is. Samsung usually uses PVA panels and some TN panels. You said viewing angle is not a concern. One thing you must think about is when going to a 30", and sitting 2-3 feet back, just to look at all the screen, you will be changing your viewing angle and this will show the limitations of a PVA panel. Even just moving to use your Track-IR could be enough to see changes. You know my friend, it is one of those things that, just go ahead and get a good one. Be done with it. If you are not going to use it with DVD's or movies, and you want to run at native resolution all the time, you will not need a built in scaler. So you could go with something like a HP LP3065 or a LG 3000h-bn. Not sure the level these are able to be hardware calibrated. Those two do not have any OSM(On Screen Menu), only can adjust the brightness on the front panel. If you want one that has beautiful built in scaling( clear at non-native resolutions) the best ability to calibrate, and a 4 year warranty, I suggest the NEC LCD3090WQXi-BK. This is a top of the line panel my friend. You will wet your pants. Do not get caught up in names like Eizo and LaCie. They are using the same panels as everyone else and charging SO MUCH !!! Beyond SO MUCH !! Now, something you should know. LG Philips is the only company I am aware of making S-IPS, H-IPS panels ( Currenty only the NEC has the H-IPS-LM300WQ5) The LM300WQ3 & LM300WQ5 They do not have the Glossy Anti-glare coating. Some like it, some do not. I am not 100% sure, but I think the Dell 3009 is using the S-IPS. For the price of the dell. a wee bit more you could get the NEC if all the multimedia ports are not in your interests and the NEC has better electronics ( hehehe Dude, it's a dell). So, all the companies that sell monitors, they are using LG panels if they have IPS technology. A little about the NEC. It has built in hardware calibration which you can use one of three ways. 1)You can buy a colorimeter yourself(NEC recommends the x-rite i1 display 2 and use that software 2) Get the colorimeter and buy the SpectraviewII software from NEC to use with the i1 display 2. 3) Get the full Spectraview Package from NEC that comes with the colorimeter( they stick NEC rebranded on the x-rite i1 display 2 ), Spectraview II software. Side note, when looking at software, make sure it supports your operating system when you are making choices. I run Vista 64bit and it is a big deal to find compatibility Once you have that, it has a USB port( only used for calibration, nothing else) and you plug your colorimeter in, either do a automatic calibration which gets you darn close and can do without the monitor being connected to a pc ( Handy if you work in a CAD firm and want to make multiple monitors all the same) Or you can plug in your colorimeter while connected to a pc with the software loaded and create your darn near perfect color profile LUT and you are cooking with gas. If you get something like this, once you read the manual, set the luminace to about 130-140cd/㎡ and save your eyeballs man. Look at the manual for the NEC and the Auto-brightness features it has that adjust to the ambient lighting. Hope all of this helps. BTW, I will probably get the NEC LCD3090W-BK-SV Whew that was a lot of typing and html links Thank you, Monnie -
As other posters stated, you need a very high refresh rate on your monitor.Devide what your refresh rate is in half, that is what you will see. ie 120hz/2=60hz. Anything less is headache time. Not possible with current LCD's. Trying to find a CRT is near impossible now.(as I give my big beast a big hug, she has been so good to me) Another factor you must consider is, you must have good vision. If you have lower vision in one eye than the other, stereoscopic technique will not work. for example Amblyopia. The technique is designed for people that have equal vision in both eyes or can be effectively corrected with eyeglasses/contacts. If you have any questions about that, consult your Ophthalmologist / Optometrist. I still have a set of the edimensional shutter glasses(actually, two sets of wireless glasses so someone could sit with me and see) and they were very effective with my CRT and nVidia drivers. My Girlfriend could never get the hang or coordination of a HOTAS, but with those glasses on, she thought it was so cool looking. My Monitor kicks out 180hz at 1024x768. But that was the day, now nVidia does not offer any newer drivers. I miss them too, Ddahlstrom. It was really cool. I flew lockon for years with them. Made all the panels come alive and landing on the carrier a whole new experience. (BTW, I just love the Su-33) Not really sure when we will see quality LCD panels with 120hz or greater refresh rates. The key word is "Quality". Not some cheap TN or PVA panels. Probably very late 2009,early 2010 just guestimating ( is that really a word, I sure use it a lot :megalol: ) Thank you, Monnie

Projector vs 3 monitors: Immersion

Icarus, What would you like to know my friend? Here is a basic read for you, look over it carefully. Does not get into get detail but it will help you I think This page Are you in the market for a 30" LCD? If you are, you need to first decide what will you use your display for, what would you like to have as future possibilities. ie: multimedia inputs, HD-DVD, Console games, Strictly computer games, doing digitial photographic work, ability to do hardware calibration, on and on. Remember the saying " Seeing is believing" can not be more true. A good display can make or break a good system setup and the things you use it for. Also color accuracy is key. Do not forget, your eyes are so important. Need to take good care of them. As in any market, to appeal to people that do not understand the specs, manufactures must have high numbers to make people think it is best or better than another brand. That is not true when it comes to panels. You do not need to scorch your retinas as if looking into a metal halide lamp because of high luminace/brightness You may also contact me on my Yahoo messenger if you want to speak one on one about it. I never mind helping. If you have any other questions, please ask. Thank you, Monnie
