re: "I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee" - Yoda Try a cerebral hemorrhage sometime. I did it 10 years ago. Lucky for me I can fly the sim world. I think it messed up my thinking process and reaction time and memory. You offer this plane as a fighter add-on, I will purchase it.

I saw this thing fly on TV by a former Navy Top Gun retired Lt. Commander on History Channel's "Pawn Stars" a few nights ago. It was a 2 seater. The original air date of the program was November 28, 2011. The guy selling it wanted at least $200,000 US dollars for it. He didn't get it. He did not take less and moved on to the next buyer. The former Navy pilot said to expect to spend $5,000 monthly between storing it and maintaining it. Obviously it was staged.:pilotfly: I just saw this thing in DCS World a few minutes ago on a non-English speaking server with 2 slots open to fly it. So, where is the download? You can log in, then watch it on keypad F4. I logged in with my P-51D Beta 2 as an observer.

If all else fails, I always head for the treetops. I have killed many A.I. (it) by it underestimating arc of recovery in a dive towards the ground. It is like playing chicken to fake it out. I like to get him on my tail and lead him into a tower or hill. You gotta' keep moving in unpredictable turns and dives and try to stay ahead of the A.I.'s algorithms, not giving it time to do the math. And then, I like to create it to do an overshoot past me. The 1st notch of flaps will drop at 400mph. Add a crab, but don't get yourself too slow and not be able to recover. The A.I. cheat in my observation, off-line in Single player. Except when the P-51 1st came out, I do not find online dogfighting opportunities in DCS World. I hope this changes. A lot of guys play FC2 still.

How To Determine Friend or Foe in BS1 or BS2?
ErichVon replied to ErichVon's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Good idea. The 104th's server is rather unforgiving as being setup as a real aircraft and no "cheats". I prefer this server once I get good enough not to need the "cheats" to learn from. The 159th's Dedicated server allows keyboard keys: F4 my friendly aircrafts and a look-around in F2; F7 to see all gvs friendly or enemy and zoom out to see where they may be; F6 to look around while the missile is flying; and F11 to kind of get a look-see of where the enemy is as to which airport; and compare it to the terrain and then compare it to the F10 map sometimes works. Now that I have mentioned this they will change it. -
How To Determine Friend or Foe in BS1 or BS2?
ErichVon replied to ErichVon's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
What I did couple nights ago on the 159th Dedicated server, I turned on my Black Shark's Datalink and I just watched where the guys were going. I had a couple icon target lights come on. There is a push button to engage overhead that took me direct flight in auto-pilot, over-riding the waypoints, directly to the enemy target area. I do not know if the other guys had their data link turned on, but they showed up on my ABRIS screen. If I am the only guy on, that won't work, though. Yes, what you say is true. In the military and out hunting I never fired my rifle until I had a clear shot and definitely knew what I was aiming at. The same rifle discipline must be observed here. It would seem to me, with the advanced technology being used, that the onboard Shkval would identify potential targets with an internal library of friendly versus enemy vehicle silhouettes to say yes or no. The older submarines of The Red October era, had an internal library of sonar signatures to identify potential targets be it enemy or not. Thanks for the reply and advice. -
KA-50 Black Shark 2 Training missions
ErichVon replied to BigfootMSR's topic in Missions and Campaigns
Hi, If you have not, read Chuck Yeager's 2nd book, you should. It's a lot about his 2 week treks into the California Sierra Mountains with not much more gear than if he ejected into no-man's land and had to survive with just what was in his survival vest. I have never approached that kind of Spartan way of doing camping. I like a few comforts, though all carried on my back. I melted my Svea's, aluminum, Sigg Tourist Cooker windscreen kit using a MSR stove in winter, it is a blowtorch of a stove. I am one of very few individuals that really get a kick watching military aircraft play while I have a great seat on a mountain top watching them dogfight each other. I saw 2, F4 Phantoms do that in the Catskill Mountains about 1971. They had come over from then, Stewart Air Force Base. They were just a few hundred feet above the summit. I waved to the up front pilot and I could see him salute back. I was back there all by myself. It was great! Yes, Bigfoot, thanks for the Black Shark training tutorials. Cheers. -
KA-50 Black Shark 2 Training missions
ErichVon replied to BigfootMSR's topic in Missions and Campaigns
I was wondering that, myself. And ditto as to what he said, they make good gear. I was self taught into backpacking and hiking up high. Then I enlisted in the Navy and they sent me to the Army's 10th Mountaineering Division's school to what was then, Camp Drum in NY State, near Canada, in February to do it their way. REI and Eastern Mountain Sports carry their gear. -
How To Determine Friend or Foe in BS1 or BS2?
ErichVon replied to ErichVon's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Yes, I do that, hence my previous 4 kills---me. I see it coming. I try to get below the hill or down in the trees. Old farts and response/reaction time "do not compute, Will Robinson" LOL! I was hoping for a mixed bag as the WWII flight and gv sim, Aces High does it. Getting in the ground vehicles is much fun. -
How To Determine Friend or Foe in BS1 or BS2?
ErichVon replied to ErichVon's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I agree with your last sentence. That is tough to do when in full sim mode, the particular Multiplayer server setup does not distinguish between red or blue dots as to enemy ground vehicles. I had no luxury as to having a wingman on that particular server setup. The only real way to know is to get fired at 1st and hope to survive the assault. I have the 2009 metal coil ring binder book for BS1. Both the IFF (CPO) power switch (#1) on the right side Wall Panel, it has "no function" (page 6-82 & 6-83), and also the Right Panel, Middle Section, the IFF transponder (#5) control has "no function" (page 6-67 & 6-sixty-eight) If these have no function, then how can they work properly? I thought I had read or watched a training video that stated the targeting HUD had symbols on the screen that let me know if the target was enemy or not. (Page 8-eight, #eight) states HUD Cue Descriptions: "C" designates "Launch authorized ('shoot') cue" . I think I am wrong. But I will review the material again. I do wonder if the real Ka-50 had the same "friend or foe" capabilities to identify a target? I am searching Google. IFF (Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identification_friend_or_foe I do remember in the 1st Iraq war there was a Discovery Channel video showing an American attack helicopter pilot, flying at night, in hover, trying to get authorization to shoot on a targeted ground vehicle. He actually was trying to get command authorization. They could not determine one way or another. He took the shot anyway. Then found out he killed a friendly, while still in hover. Since I wish to play Multiplayer in FC2, as it is more active with open servers, I play BS1 Ka-50. All I wish to know, is there a device to use, within BS1, to identify friend or foe as the real helicopter has? The answer seems to be no. I must ask, though I may appear mean spirited, if DCS wishes to create a re-creation flight simulator, why do some controllers, switches, knobs, buttons work properly and others do not? This is also true in the current DCS World P-51D in its Beta 2 version as to the other 2 radios not functioning. Thank you guys for the replies. -
This YouTube video is using audible voice commands using Guitar Guru: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2ZBPgbD7g I have no idea if radio comms could be implemented in this way. I see I previously posted this to Message #44. (I wonder if Alzheimers is in my future... ?)

How To Determine Friend or Foe in BS1 or BS2?
ErichVon replied to ErichVon's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Reply to myself: Actually doing a simple search, inputting: "friend or foe" without the quotation marks brings up a few thread topic titles such as this one: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=42339&highlight=friend+foe in case it does not link: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=42339 Actually from my limited reading, so far, the real Ka-50 has the technology, but in the sim, the cockpit, both IFF controls do not function. Someone asked in this thread I have listed, "does any sim out there identify friend or foe?" (paraphrased). Well, my Microprose Gunship sim of the 1980's for my Commodore 64 did. Aside: (the August 2012 issue of MaximumPC has an article titled, "Commodore Redux" about a replica C64 outside with a modern PC guts inside. It is a building project by Gordon Mah Ung. How do I load up my old 5.250 diameter floppy disks?) My old C-64 still works! I have no room to set it up unless I remodel my attic. As people tossed perfectly good C-64s and 1541 drives, I have a few spares primarily to cannibalize for parts. There still may be a group or two to Yahoo! Groups dedicated to the C-64. -
I was playing on the 159ths unlocked Dedicated server last night in Multiplayer. I was on the FC2 server using the BS1 (1.0.2). The enemy was not designated friend or foe. I was flying in full sim mode. It was towards the end of the exercise. Most of the enemy aircraft had either landed or was finishing mopping up the inner cities' (my side's friendly ground vehicles) as their convoys were advancing well into the interior. I had been shot down in my Ka-50, 4 times, on 4 separate sorties around Waypoint 1. Eerie sound hearing an enemy rocket fly pass and missing. On my 5th outing out I established a hover at about 200 meters on my HUD and was just waiting out the advancing convoys to my position. I am still not very good at combat actions. I found targets of vehicles in a mixed array of friendlies and enemies. My 1st, 3 vollies of the Vikhr missile was at my own tanks, but I did not realize this, 7K out. My missiles did hit, but they did not smoke or explode; I eventually realized my 3 missiles, each fired independently, were hitting a friendly tank. 4th attempt was fired at an enemy vehicle and did smoke and then exploded on one missile shot. I was using the Shkval screen for targeting. LOL! 5th attempt was a friendly and I was booted immediately off the server for about an hour. I could not even gain access to 3 other servers I tried. So I figured I was banned off the servers by some ingrained code the 159th server put on my IP address. Changing my Multiplayer username had no effect. Even turning off my router and letting my ISP select another proxy IP address had no effect. I figured there most likely was a time period to wait out or some problem with my router. I experimented on the Internet and my router worked OK. I do not care to be banned forever in Multiplayer. My team-kills were not acts of deliberate mischief, but just poor judgement on my part. I realize the IFF (CPO) switch on the right side wall panel does not function. BUT, will my targeting HUD tell me if my target is friend or foe? Yes, I am reading the manual. Lots to know.

I was thinking hexadecimal, but I don't think so. Too funny.

"crashing and burning since 1982" You got me beat by 3 years as to my Commodore 64. LOL! Buddy of mine, started out putting together PC's soldering components to the motherboard in the 70's.

re: Message Post #60: You Think? LOL! That is why I am balking at buying the FSX 3rd party SuperBug. DCS's version, if it is the F-18, should be a lot better as to the shortcomings of my FSX. I never did like it. Remember the SubLogic flight sim that pre-dated Microsofts' FS? Talk about lousy frame rates... I'd settle for any aircraft carrier plane DCS wants to model be it WWII, Korea, 'Nam, and since to the present and be quite happy as to my previous 4 DCS aircraft purchases to date.

I just happened upon this thread about a week ago. I knew nothing about this FSX, 3rd party add-on. I don't have the SuperBug, yet, but I am looking at it. I have had FSX and the Acceleration pack for 3 or 4 years but it never ran very good on my old Dell or my homebuilt. I just put it on my new Alienware and it can fly FSX almost maxed out with frame rates of a consistent 60. From your referenced listing (message Post #37, this thread) I downloaded the AICARRIERS2 last night and got that running with the FSX's F-18. Found this YouTube index to feel out the F-18 SuperBug: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=superbug+fsx&oq=SuperBug&aq=1&aqi=g4&aql=&gs_l=youtube-reduced.1.1.0l4.4296552.4301350.0.4309677.8.5.0.3.3.0.189.622.3j2.5.0...0.0.pHASwIPkeWI So if I go purchase the SuperBug and the embellishments for it, then DCS will publish its F-18 beta, the next day. LOL! I just wonder if that is the next DCS aircraft? I realize even if you knew, you guys in the know are not allowed to talk about it. And DCS will most likely do it better. But from what I have been reading, the many classified aspects of the Super Hornet may prevent this. But never say never.

A-10 Warthog in on Military Channel tonight (New)
ErichVon replied to Ramstein's topic in Military and Aviation
I learned more about the Warthog in DCS, than I did last night watching the "Great Planes" Warthog video. But it was still fun to watch. The retired general, now museum director, stated that firing the gun did not significantly slow down the aircraft. Yet, I have seen guys come onto a simulated cartoon aircraft carrier (CV) while firing their A-10 gun to significantly slow themselves down, on a few YouTube videos I have watched, and land successfully. I tried that, and the gun would not fire with the gun safeties switched off. Somehow these guys overrode the gun safety on landing approach. Or I did it wrong. {;^) -
If I were to make an assumption...
ErichVon replied to Bullitt's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I started out a year ago last January and found the Lock On Platinum 2 CDs boxed version to Best Buy for $20. But I almost immediately went to the new, non-beta, DCS: A-10C. Then I got the DCS: Black Shark 1 and 2. When the P-51 came out with DCS_World, it included the FC2: Su-25T. So I needed to learn this aircraft. I found Crunch had made a pretty good .map profile for my CH Products trio I found to CH Hangar for all the FC2 aircraft. While playing around with the Su-33, I found out about the various FC2's autopilot modes. It is pretty cool to watch the Su-33 automatically land itself on to the aircraft carrier. Can't do that in DCS. I still have a lot to learn concerning FC2, but that is where most of the guys' servers are to play with. FC2 is much more active than DCS or DCS_World in Multiplayer. I found Su-25 and Su-25T training User Files in Lock On FC2 that can be added to the interactive training for both aircraft to learn the basics from in Single Player. The current Su-25T beta in DCS_World has a few bugs in it. I find it best to learn this thing in FC2. I agree, it is a bear, learning the various keyboard commands but the FAQ sticky does have resources guys have made to make it a little bit easier. But repetition does help to memorize the commands usually used. It is kind of like a real pilot on active duty assigned to a certain aircraft for a few years, to get good at just that one aircraft. I do have pictorial joystick and throttle printed layouts I use for each .map aircraft profile that are hung on each side of my monitor on clipboard type hanger arms I bought from my Commodore 64 days back about 1985. I have different profiles for each aircraft saved in My Documents accessed through my CH_Control_Manager. Just about anything you need to know is in the forum archives and has been addressed previously. It just takes time to sift through it. -
A-10 Warthog in on Military Channel tonight (New)
ErichVon replied to Ramstein's topic in Military and Aviation
The program airs at 10 PM (June 13th) and again at 1 AM (June 14th) Eastern (NY) Time Zone on Time-Warner Cable. -
Well, I really, really hope the next DCS aircraft is the F18 and a CV to land it on and combat missions to that end. I wonder what the VRA community is like? Thanks for bringing me up to speed on the VRA F-18 E/F setup requirements.
-
I do not think so. I do like to be contradicted, though, because I do like to learn new things, especially when I am not sure of the facts. From what I have read, A2A will play at it, like the aerial dogfight planes for hire do down near Orlando, Florida. Maybe A2A could put long, flag like, ribbons on the tail of the opposing aircraft, to munch off with the propeller like the one handed, two-line model plane flyers used to do (maybe they still do). I did not know about this: (a lot I do not know) http://www.vrsimulations.com/tacpack.htm http://www.google.com/search?q=fsx+tacpack+release+date&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a http://www.google.com/search?q=fsx+tacpack+download&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

I was Navy, USA. If a pilot screws up there is always an inquiry as to what happened, maybe even Captain's Mast. So in this same scenario, maybe you would get another plane, maybe not.
-
In real life, the mechanics would be cannibalizing parts off the aircraft that no longer fly. So it would not be a total waste or write-off.:smilewink: If no plane to fly, the squadron commander might find another squadron for you. I doubt an officer would be doing KP, unless he likes it. I have seen guys on active duty go do some cooking on their off time, just for fun.
