Leatherneck Simulations Monthly Update - Februamarch 2015
Foul Ole Ron replied to Cobra847's topic in Heatblur Simulations
Really hoping the prop plane is the F4U. That plane done to DCS level with carrier ops thrown in on top would just be awesome. -
I'm hopeful EDGE and the release of dserver functionality will improve both of those current weaknesses. I guess we'll see how it all pans out throughout the year but I'm optimistic.
-
That McCarren video looks fantastic. Really hope we get a public alpha release relatively soon - even if it's just a single player release that all you can do initially is just fly around.

x55 no button press while profile is running
Foul Ole Ron replied to Regamuffin's topic in Controller Profiles and Problems
Probably you were trying to get a combination of shift + some key which I've found to be a bit dodgy with SST. To get around it you can use the advanced commands in the SST software. Right click on the button that you want to program and there should be an option for New Advanced Command in the list. Give the command a descriptive name like you would normally. Then in the Repeat box enter in the command that you want e.g. SHIFT F. It might add in a couple of extra ones but just delete them so you're left with only one SHIFT F. Then right click again in the Repeat box and select Quantize Time. Select 0.000 as the time you want. Once you've done that you should see 0.000 under both the SHIFT and F buttons. Click OK then and you're done - should work fine now. Despite this little bit of hassle I find it easier to use SST than going through the game UI as you can give all the buttons proper names and it's a lot easier to keep track of what button you have assigned to what. -
Great post Curly. Looks to be exactly what Belsimtek were asking for before they would take a look at the rudder behaviour of the Sabre. Hopefully they'll decide to take another look now and make a correction so the rudder behaves, well, more like a rudder.

From the Dec ED newsletter: We have had to revise our production estimates on this project, and we now believe the project will be available in Q2 of 2015. By February 2015, we hope to provide you further updates.

Looks great.. even ready for beta if I say so myself.

Don't think Yo-Yo was saying it'll be unpleasant to fly just that you'll need to be smooth with the inputs which corresponds to the real one as far as I know.

Open beta flight dynamics...
Foul Ole Ron replied to Anatoli-Kagari9's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
Maybe earlier in the war they let pilots fiddle with convergence but with the later Mustangs equipped with the K-14 gunsight the USAF had two ranges and harmonisation patterns and that's what pretty much all pilots flew with depending on the mission requirement. Probably more correct to term it a harmonisation pattern as it wasn't designed by then to punch a plate sized hole at the ideal range but to hit a variety of areas. Mightn't have suited those guys who'd used fixed sights earlier and liked to get in really close but probably a lot of them had either been killed, promoted to staff or rotated home by then. That being said I think it is actually possible to adjust the harmonisation pattern in DCS but it would be extremely difficult to get done right by a user. There was a good thread on it all a while back which had some great diagrams in it showing the actual result of the harmonisation pattern used by the USAF for various ranges: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=95689&highlight=convergence&page=6 -
So who likes the new F-86 canopy and increased gun smoke?
Foul Ole Ron replied to Winston60's topic in DCS: F-86F Sabre
+1 Holbeach. The current smoke effect is completely over the top - not sure why they changed it from the original version which seemed fine to me. There should be some smoke but not nearly as much as we're seeing. Hopefully they tone it down quickly as it's getting a bit unplayable at the moment as a combat machine. I'm not the biggest fan of the new grime, etc. on the cockpit. It's realistic I'm sure but spotting is already unrealistically difficult in DCS at the moment so I'd say either dial back the grime a bit or I'll just have to use a mod to clear it all. -
Will work absolutely fine.

DCS: Spitfire Mk LF IXc Discussion
Foul Ole Ron replied to Yo-Yo's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
The RAF trials seemed to indicate that there was very little between the VIII and the IX. Would probably depend on the task at hand and the mission altitude. For high altitude the VIII was slightly better and for lower altitudes I'd probably prefer the IX with its superior roll rate. Though it looks like the trial below was the VIII with the extended wing tips so presumably with the standard wing the low altitude maneuverability difference wouldn't be present. http://www.spitfireperformance.com/spit8tac.html I think you're probably right though. Jeffrey Quill liked the VIII the most. -
DCS: Spitfire Mk LF IXc Discussion
Foul Ole Ron replied to Yo-Yo's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Hopefully when making the Spit IX they take the chance to create a 72" / 21lbs Merlin 66 which could be ported across to the Mustang as well. I guess the Spit IX was cleared for 25lbs but that might be pushing the boat out a bit too far. Looking forward to seeing some screenshots over the next while. Going to be fun flying what is supposed to be the definitive Spit in terms of sweet handling. -
No problem. If you can't find them just pm me your email address and I'll forward the last few on to you from mine.

You can do a search on the forum for previous newsletters. Current status is 2 out of 5 planes released (or 3 out of 6 if you include the already released Mustang). Spitfire will be the next plane released. Probably Q2. Terrain will come after NTTR and Straits of Hormuz. I'd say that means Q3 next year.

72" Mustang vs D9 / K4 using B4/MW50 would probably have been the most common match up. Hopefully the Mustang will get a bit of a boost to reflect what would have been a more common engagement.
-
+1 Just look at the other two WW2 sims out in the market right now. There is a very distinct bubble of visibility after which ground textures become very blurred. Edge looks to be striking a nice balance to me given current consumer hardware limitations.

What's with P-51 versus Fw 190 in Dogfights ?
Foul Ole Ron replied to SnowTiger's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
ED should be going for the most common historical match-up which would mean giving the Mustang 72" at a minimum and possibly 75". This would bring it in line with the Dora and Kurfust variants that they've modelled. Anything else is pretty incorrect. Can understand how we got here as they didn't really intend to make a full on WW2 sim themselves nevertheless I hope the Mustang gets a revisit to make it a proper late '44-45 combat variant. -
Interview with Leatherneck Studios
Foul Ole Ron replied to Count Sessine's topic in Heatblur Simulations
The two engines maybe could refer to a F-14A+ or F-14D®? Some of them might have started out life as a F-14A with the TF30 engine and had it replaced later by the GE F110-400 engine. While others would have been built new with just the GE F110-400. -

I think it'll be a Hellcat too. After the long creation period behind the Mig-21 they'll probably need a cash injection from a quicker to build plane which will allow them to get all the Mig-23 work done. -

Sounds like a few bugs crept in right at the end when compiling the final build. No worries these things can happen and will get fixed. LN are clearly on the case and will get it sorted out. Admirable lack of freaking out by the community too! We'll all be flying the Mig with normal FPS soon enough. There's often a few bugs with any DCS World release so hopefully ED can slot in a hot fix shortly. They probably had one planned anyway for anything that came up.
