THRUSTMASTER HOTAS Warthog
xaoslaad replied to SolUniverse's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Not me, sorry. I just program it all in game.. -
He didnt say it, but I suspect he meant SAM radar in this case. I have also been very very low and had SA-11's firing at me with buildings between us (yes, low enough for the buildings to matter) and all. The missiles generally dont track which is good, but they should never even get off the rail. Granted there are other problems with the scenario i speak about, like why did I intentionally fly that close to an SA-11 in an su-25 or a-10, and would anyone in a chopper and not in the process of landing ever really fly that low, but still.

Doesnt setti g a slider to zoom work with OR? Is doing that asking for a puke fest? I use this a lot with a monitor already and cant really see why it'd hurt unless its diorienting...
-
I have heard the same about guages. I will find out first hand in some weeks, but at the least the resolution has increased from DK1 along with reduced latency and improved head tracking which should help with the puke factor. I got to try the DK1 and DK2 and the 2 has noticeably better resolution. My hope is CV1 ups it even more.

Should a GBU-12 be able to hit a moving tank?
xaoslaad replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I agree. It should definitely work and I've done it many many times, but I would also drop closer to 10k than 5k. You might also consider turning auto lase on and setting the lase timer to 10. Also, are you holding the lase button if you're doing it manually? Without changing the latch setting it will turn off instantly if you release it, so you'd be effectively just lasing the target for a split second. -
You may be the epitomy of awesome, but some people do have a hard time landing other aircraft besides the FW-190. If there are real pilots (granted not of the Dora) saying it is insanely difficult that throws some caution flags to me. Sure its not the end of the argument, which is why I prefaced my whole comment with 'If'. Because Im certainly not the one to say. I'd even be fine if someone in ED in the know said it's pretty accurate.

If it really isn't bugged or badly modelled, then sure let's be quiet and learn. On the other hand I think what many of us find is that the Dora is literally the hardest plane in DCS to land, by a long shot. I used to think the Su-25T was hard. After some of the newer planes intro'd I now consider the Su-25T easy as pie. F-86F and MiG-21Bis are my new tough but doables. FW-190 still makes me miserable. And I personally think if it was as hard as it is in DCS there wouldn't have been many Dora's or Dora pilots left in short order. They didn't have simulators and dual pit planes to learn on back then. Guy went up for his first takeoff, guy came down probably white knuckled and heart pounding for his landing. It had to be easy enough that even a relative beginner (and definitely a beginner to that plane) could make it down successfully, even on his first few attempts if they wanted to have any pilots left. Now I know that doesn't mean easy, but... I forget what the number given on the vertical velocity indicator to make a successful landing in the manual and tutorials as it's been awhile since I tried, but I basically found it had to be less than half that and you need to stall it out onto the runway at that gentle decent to get success. That's all I could do in the end to get it to work without a giant bounce - it was very nerve racking, but worked for me. But it seems insane and wrong that that's the way they'd land.

Holding ctrl while loading from the main menu to the game can cause the prompts to come up. I knew someone who used it for TS press to talk that it was happening to all the time. Also, if you have to do it every time after a hardware change and it wont take try this: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/faq/activation_wiki/ I cant easily look at the linked reg files on my phone but I believe they jsut delete the registry keys so you can reactivate like new. That same person I mentioned with the TS issue hit this one as well and this worked for him. You can imagine he was a little upset with DCS activation by the end of that night. Edit: I now see kazereal pointed at the wiki already, but can confirm it's good advice.

MSI GTX970 Gaming OC 4GB First Thoughts
xaoslaad replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have SLI 970's ordered, one for each eyeball, along with an Oculus Rift and I cant wait to see DCS in action with it either on the display or being pumped directly into my brain. But I still have at least a month wait, particularly for the OR before I get to experience it. That should give some time for the supposed OR/Nvidia features to actually manifest in the software though. I'm thoroughly convinced OR will be the way to go after trying it, especially if the CV1 ends up boasting better resolution. -
They have never given a solid release date much before it's ready. Not hearing anyyhing doesn't mean anything.

And LHD's. Theyre capable of choppers, harriers, Ospreys, etc. It would be cool if it could launch LCAC's too. Support amphibious vehicles going up on shore. Especially if we got the Whiskey Cobra.

What happenned to fuel tanks dropped over SE Asia
xaoslaad replied to xaoslaad's topic in Military and Aviation
http://www.warhistoryonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Fuel-tanks-jettisoned-by-US-jets-in-Vietnam-War-repurposed-by-locals.jpg Here is a picture with a plate with specification of one. Considering everything up to B-52's were flown in Vietnam I guess there could be some large tanks around. -
I use Fedora (20 at present) for whatever I can and Windows 8.1 for sims.

I'm pretty sure the Mig-21 is to blame. I set up a mission with the one mig to practice landing in the mission editor and even that takes for bleeding ever with the mig to load. change it to something else, no problem again. Maybe when they cut out all those poly's in the next patch it will load faster.

'JUST' edge he says, lol. The holy grail of our simm'ing universe right now :megalol:

Right, so being a flight sim hobbyist (or any game for that matter) should preclude you from being an OS and/or computing hobbyist? Should I really want or have to have two computers to muck around with my systems innards on a more frequent than average basis or repartition or install new hard drives to check out other operating systems? Virtualization makes a lot of that easier these days, but there are still reasons for wanting to mess around, including just simple learning. Starforce assumes you're Joe user who can barely turn on his computer.

Get out of my head!!!! I do the same thing, lol. Right down to the 500Gb Samsung SSD and old 500Gb spinning disk, so I heartily endorse your advice. In my case I just use the Windows backup and recovery tool (I forget what it's called in Windows 8 but it's hidden in the File History section of the Control Panel) and have (not with this hard drive) used it in the past to restore to recover from a failed disk. It's free, assuming you have the external drive, and can save A LOT of misery.

Night Missions Possible for Ka-50 and Others

This is a multi-player example - the one I was mentioning earlier, in case you're interested. Repel ground assault on Senaki-Kolkhi.miz -
Night Missions Possible for Ka-50 and Others
xaoslaad replied to ZoomBoy27's topic in Mission Editor
Thanks man. I just created a mission for my friends and the Ka-50's were getting neglected because people had to beg each other for LUU-2B's. With this an outpost and arty gun on an overlooking hill fill in nicely and it works great. Much thanks for the detailed walkthrough. Rep inbound. -
Now that I've had some time to fly this thing I am in awe. It is amazing. I nearly spit coffee all over my screen when it said there were several controls for breaking/taxiing and it'll light them up - and half the cockpit lights up. Comedy gold. :megalol: But ya, the whole thing is like that. It's great. It's amazing. I just wonder how anyone ever manages to fly the thing in real life :) I've managed Gun strafing, Nuke, and Kh-66 so far along with landings, taxiing, and takeoff and it's just so amazing. My next goal is to figure out how I keep cutting out the engine :D Thanks guys! Great times ahead. :joystick:

If you're looking to replace the entire disk you don't have to pay anything. Use a Linux LiveCD from just about any distro and use dd to dump the contents of one disk in entirety to the other if the new disk is big enough. Then you can just go into windows Disk Management and expand the partition if necessary. If you need to shrink the partition or prefer a graphical interface there is always gparted, available on most Linux LiveCD's as well. Yes, these utilities work on FAT/NTFS partitions. If you just want to put your existing install onto the SSD one easy way to do this is moving the _contents_ of C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics to a temp folder. Shutdown, install your SSD, staple your computer back up, boot. Right click on "This PC", "My Computer", "Computer", or whatever your Win release is calling it. Click Manage on the context menu. Go to Storage -> Disk Management on the left menu, make sure your SSD is formatted (think it needs to be NTFS for this to work) Right click the partition Select Change Drive Letter and Paths on the Context menu Select Mount in the following empty NTFS folder in the new window, and set it up to be C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics. Move the contents back into the folder. Now your registry settings, links, blah blah blah are still correct and the game is on an SSD. I did this for a friend who had a 120GB SSD hanging around that wasn't big enough for his system disk, but plenty enough for DCS. Worked fine.

Heres the info. Guess it was 75 not 120, which exaggerates motion. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Field_of_View

Oh, man, I have no issue with 99.99% games, but Half Life 2 made me want to die. Never could get through much of it back in the day. I read later it was because they used a 120 degree FOV or something and that there was a 'cheat' to change it to 90, but never tried. Maybe you can dig that up though and it will help. Given what it did with a monitor HL2 would probably make me flat out barf.
