Yeah it is going to be fun to see who guessed well and who failed.. Probably won't be that cut and dry anyway and we will all be way off base.. Should be fun to watch though.. CHEERS!

You beat me to it!

Well not trying to be difficult here but I don't agree with that assesment.. While it is true they are probably optimizing the software as best they can, this is a rendering engine that will be used moving forward for some years and as such they are going to try to stretch the current capabilities as much as they can.. While I expect some great improvements due to DX11 being used for example, I also expect that ED will try to pack as many features and enhancements as they can to wow all of us. These enhancements will take horsepower to utilize.. My guess is that even with optimization and DX11 etc. I think EDGE 2.0 will still require more computing power than the current version does... WHERE that power will be most required (CPU, Memory, Video Card) I can't say.. And remember that NONE of this is based on anything other than info on this forum and my own experience with computers. It is all a WILD GUESS.

That may be, but since we don't know what build that is and have no idea how that build relates to the upcoming completed retail version I am not sure how useful that information really is? (I agree it should give a few clues on what to expect but nothing that can be relied on at this point.)

Everything is a guess at this point, but if I were building a new system for DCS I would use your existing I5 as it is a fair piece of equipment.. Same for the 8 GIGs memory (16 would be my choice as I am betting DCS 2.0 will require more memory that the current iteration.) WIN7 should be good so I would use existing.. And finally I would take a good look at the Nvidia 970 GTX and 980 GTX video cards.. (I would go for the 980 but it is pretty pricey. The 970 looks to be the best buy of the 2 by far and either one should do well with DCS currently and into the DCS 2.0 realm.)

Yeah we had them check out the equipment and they found nothing out of the ordinary and I went on training for another 20 hours or so but had an illness in the family and at the same time they increased training costs by $100 Per flight HOUR... Since I was already paying stupid, ridiculous money at $325 a flight hour, I couldn't justify $425 an hour so I had to walk away... My instructor went on to fly for PHI in the gulf and has flown some pretty kick-ass machines.. Several of the Bell models and the S72 as well. He has since transferred back and is running a medflight in Wisconsin flying a Eurocopter I believe... We talk periodically (well TEXT actually) and neither one of us really knows what happened that day..

Real life OH SH*T moment: About 10 hours into helicopter training and performing pick-ups and set-downs.. My instructor was on the cyclic and I had the collective and the pedals.. The idea being that I could get the feel of the torque turning the helicopter and could focus on just the anti-torque pedals and the relation between pulling pitch and compensating with the pedals. Sounds like a good idea right? Sooo, you focus on the horizon and slowly pull the collective while watching your manifold pressure and as the helicopter gets light on it's skids it will start to rotate due to the torque.. So you put in a little pedal to counteract the torque and continue pulling the collective and eventually the helicopter will lift itself off the ground and you can experiment with the pedals noting how pushing the pedals one way or the other will affect the helicopter by causing it to lift or drop a few feet depending on which pedals you are pressing.. So we do this 4 or 5 times no issues and I am quite comfortable.. The next time, I focus on the horizon, slowly pull pitch... The helicopter starts to turn and I put in some pedal... Pull more pitch and as the helicopter lifts off the ground... And veers hard-left and slaps the left-hand skid on the ground and rolls over on it's side.. As the main body of the helicopter rolls left I can feel the rotor hit the ground repeatedly until the blades split apart and embed a large piece of rotor in the back of the cabin just to the right of my head.. Bang, Bang, Bang, BANG. The force of the rotors hitting the ground smashes the front canopy. Amazingly, I have a nasty cut to my face but no other injuries at all.. My instructor was less lucky and since I was resting on top of him he had a broken collarbone.. He manages to get unbuckled and picks his way out of the helicopter through the broken front canopy... I am stuck in my belts and cannot get free.. (About this time I notice fuel spilling everywhere and reach over and turn the fuel petcock off.. A futile attempt as the fuel is actually spilling out of the tank filler cap due to the fact that it is laying on it's side..) My instructor finally pulled out a knife and cut my seatbelts and I am able to carefully climb thru the broken windshiled and walk away.. To this day I faithfully carry a Gerber folding knife ALWAYS.. And we never really did determine what exactly happened to cause the dynamic rollover... NOT recommended..

I hear what you are saying, but if I was in that postion I would definitely look hard at that option as the vast majority of the work would already be completed so any revenue generated from DCS would be gravy... Even if the profit margin wasn't large, it is pure profit.. And isn't DCS doing EXACTLY that with DCS WORLD? They are exactly the model that you are stating is not likely to happen..

How is it mis-leading? He is asking do you primarily fly combat... or non-combat? Not seeing how this can be misleading in any way.. ??

Upgrading from 8gb to 16gb, worth the difference?
outlawal2 replied to rajdary's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Upgrading from say 6 GB to 8 or 12 would be a big and noticeable difference because if memory is too low the OS has to swap to HD and this will bring everything to a crawl.. Load times would seriously suck. But if you already have 8 Gigs you would not see any benefit going to 16... (Unless you run a BOATLOAD of other applications at the same time..) If money is no object, you could buy 32Gigs of memory and setup a RAM disk and completely load DCS to the RAM disk and THAT would be very fast indeed. No load times at all.. -
Just remember that everything you add takes away resources from the simulation itself and many are already complaining about the response in DCS.. I personally would not want them to focus on this but that is purely my opinion... (I figure if I want music I can turn on my own radio in the room)

I took some time and tried to find the post with the pics of the Nevada map showing the sliver of West Coast and for the life of me I can't find the darn thing... If anyone else has a link I would greatly appreciate it....

Kinda sounds like Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica....
-
IIRC the South-western edge of the Nevada map reaches to the california coast so we could easily use that map as part of a WW3 scenario invading the US.. Only a small portion of Coast line will be covered, but even if the coastal invasion ends up not possible, you can certainly setup a scenario where the coastal region has already been captured by the enemy and simply have them start off-map and enter from the Western side of the map..

\ But if half of your customer base is on WIN7 (No idea if that is the case, but just saying) and WIN7 is not supported for DX12 then spending time and effort at this time does not make a lot of sense..
-
YEP wayyyy too early to worry about DX12.. Especially if the most used OS out there isn't going to be supported..

We can't have it both ways folks. We complain that EDGE isn't here, and we haven't even seen it yet and folks are asking to have it be compliant with a standard that was released like what.. 3 months ago? Follow that logic and we will never see EDGE as it chases every possible update to technology that comes down the pike.. They need to complete what they have and if that means DX11 then so be it as it will still be much improved. THEN once that has been completed and bugs sufficiently wrung out, then they can look at updating to DX12.. (And as I understand it, moving from dx11 to dx12 isn't that huge of an undertaking, but going from DX9 to 12 is a big step.. That is why their current plan moving to DX11 makes perfect sense..) I would MUCH rather take delivery of EDGE with DX11 rather than wait yet again for DX12..

Crack open your case and see if something is impeding the fan(s) on your video card. Sometimes a wire can get in the way or depending on how old the card is it may get chugged with dust / hair whatever and this will cause the fan to not respond as it should and this will cause the issues you are seeing..

And another example of someone that should not purchase BETA software.. Ever... Clearly has no idea what BETA means (and the fact that BETA comes after ALPHA) In the future wait for the completed product and save yourself and the rest of us a lot of grief..
-
That's the spirit!
-
Of course it isn't... What you do within the simulation is not constant so your frame rate will go up and down based on the load... And that load is constantly changing.. Once again folks... This is a flight simulation and it will tax your machine HARD... Don't expect Herculean framerates.. That is not reasonable..

That depends on how much work a 3rd party dev is willing to throw away for free... If you are coding for a living, are you going to spend maybe 2 or more YEARS working on a module not knowing if the copyright holder is going to shut you down at a given moment? I know there is no way in Hell I would take that kind of risk and no right-minded developer will either.. They would go out of business that way... You have to put your eggs in the basket that allows you to realize a return on your investment... Wishing and hoping is a flawed strategy at best.. And really isn't a strategy at all..

As has been stated repeatedly, to complete an AFM (which is what VEAO wants to do) the systems require signoff from the copyright holder. And depending on who the copyright holder is, some of those folks are quite nasty about protecting their copyright no matter HOW it is used.. To do things right and to be completely ethical (and thus safe from any litigation) you need approval from the owners.. Besides, turn it around.. If you put all of your blood sweat and tears into a plane, would you want an outsider coming in and making money on your investment? (And for those of you that are about to say "Sure wouldn't bother me" I cry Bullshit... The same folks adamant about "I want it and I want it now" would be the loudest whiners about "Hey that is mine and you shouldn't use it.."
