  1. Dark blacks and very high contrast ratio is the selling point behind VA panels. They can achieve static contrast ratio approaching 5000:1 while IPS/AHVA are around 1000:1 and TN panels are even less, typically between 600:1 to 800:1
  2. Absolutely. 1080 and 1440 is the sweetspot for the GTX 970. It's not good beyond 1440 though. And technically speaking the technology AHVA = IPS. They are just different trademarks owned by different manufacturers. Not to be confused with VA which is actually a different technology with different pros and cons. The Asus ROG Swift PG279Q has just been released in my country and reviews are good but it's damn expensive. It also use the same panel as the previous two I mentioned. Only major difference is that it's overclockable to 165hz, which in my opinion is pretty useless and not worth the price premium. There's also an Eizo coming later this year, with similar specs.
  3. There is no such thing as 144hz in 4k resolution right now, because there is no interface with the required bandwidth to achieve that. The fastest interface currently in use is display port 1.2, and it is limited to 60hz in 4k. The highest resolution where you can achieve 144hz is 2560x1440. Both monitors you propose are TN panels. Don't expect good image quality from these panels. For about the same price you can get what in my opinion is the best gaming monitors right now, which are 144hz 2560x1440 27'' IPS panels with adaptive sync. There are a couple of options. Have a look at these: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asus_mg279q.htm http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/acer_xb270hu.htm They are very closely matched, and even use the same panel. The largest difference is the Asus has Freesync and the Acer has G-sync.
  4. Yes, good choise, especially for 1080p. No need for overpriced 980 or Titan series. 970 is the sweetspot (or 390 for those who decide to go with AMD).
  5. Lol, that's not what he meant. :) The expression "I don't buy it" usually means the same thing as "I don't believe this". The word "buy" is not to be taken literally here.
  6. True, it's unnecessary and will draw a lot of power which turns into heat, but the cooling should always be able to handle it anyway. If it can't then something is wrong with it.
  7. So clearly you have a problem with the cooler, and yet you blame DCS for the damage done? Normal full load temperature for your card is 65-70°C. You are way beyond that, so it's easy to see where the problem is. Baking it in the oven is not a proper fix. Reattach the cooler with clean surfaces, new thermal paste and make sure it's a tight fit, and not loose in any way. That's a proper fix.
  8. That doesn't mean the card is dead. Maybe you killed it in the oven, but try taking the cooler off, clean the area where heat flows from GPU to heatsink, apply new thermal paste and make sure you mount the cooler properly with a good amount of pressure against the GPU. Something may have warped when you put it in the oven, so that the GPU and heatsink doesn't have good contact anymore.
  9. Yes, that is possible in the nvidia driver. They call it adaptive v-sync (not to be confused with adaptive sync). Here's how to enable it: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/adaptive-vsync/technology
  10. Yes, of course. Not sure why piXel496 doesn't mention that. The whole point behind v-sync is to eliminate screen tearing, so just a simple fps limiter is not a substitute for v-sync.
  11. But there were two more hints in the form of ground mapping radar and advanced missiles. I guess it could work though, with some fictional extra equipment. Da Vinci Aerial Screw confirmed!
  12. With the current 1.5 and black sea map, you could potentially see a performance improvement going from 4gb to 8gb, but going from 8gb to 16gb should do exactly nothing. Personally I have been seeing usage around 4,3gb with the 1.5 open beta on my PC which has 16gb of RAM.
  13. "Nothing" is exactly what you should expect right now. As for the Nevada map, that could be a different story.
  14. Yea. Choose your poison :)
  15. Okay, so we now know the issue can happen on both AMD and Nvidia cards. As far as I know, the new version is dx11 only, so the sim shouldn't be able to run at all unless your system is dx11 compatible. That would mean this particular problem cannot be caused by non dx11 compatible cards.
  16. The plume in the screenshot is being masked by the bright background though. That comparison is not fair. Completely different conditions in the screenshot and the picture.
  17. Nonono. They never forced anyone to install raptr. During installation, choose "Custom installation" and just uncheck "AMD Gaming Evolved" to get rid of all the bloatware. They should have been more clear about it though, and in an ideal world, I would like to see such software banished, or at least separated from the driver installation.
  18. Yup, same here using Freesync on a 144hz monitor. It's smooth as baby skin since 1.5 update.
  19. Oh, sorry. I though you meant the dof when you said blur. Not sure what you are seeing then. I assume you view distance setting is properly tweaked? At high, I personally feel that I can see further and more clearly than in 1.2, especially from high altitude.
  20. The current version of 1.5 defaults to borderless window mode. Lalt + enter is a keybind that will put the sim into exclusive fullscreen mode, which might fix the issues you are having.
  21. The FOV problem? Care to explain? :)
  22. I'm seeing exactly the same framerate as you on 1440p with a FX-8350 @4,6ghz, so I'm pretty sure a mid range CPU is enough, and you won't see much more improvement from having a high end CPU. Clearly the GPU is more important in the new engine. Speaking of GPU's! The author of the topic never told us what GPU the CPU was going to be paired with, which makes it impossible to give a proper answer.
  23. The way I see it, the blur is to emulate a camera for those that want to take nice screenshots and make videos. Same thing with lens flare and lens dirt. Just go into the settings and turn all that stuff off.
  24. Lol, I'm sorry, but why would they focus their promotion towards video gamers? They are not selling any products targeted at that audience. YouTube is a very wide platform, and is actually useful for them in promoting their products to the target audience, which mostly consists of governments around the world. I also belive there is a disclaimer on the DCS loading screen saying something along the lines of "The manufacturers and intellectual property right owners of the vehicles, weapons, sensors and other systems represented in DCS World in no way endorse, sponsor or are otherwise involved in the development of DCS World and it's modules".
  25. Neither of those fit the hints given by Leatherneck. Haven't you been reading the speculation threads? :)
