How can you be so sure? Current version of DCS seem to favour Nvidia GPU's. DCS2 will have a completely new graphics rendering engine, using a different API. There's no way that anyone outside the development team can say if DCS2 will also favour Nvidia GPU's, or if it will favour AMD, or the ideal case, where it works well on both. Also, what GPU do we need for acceptable frametimes in DCS2? Will a 560ti suffice? Do we need a 970? Who knows.... Isn't it better to just wait and see what results people have when DCS2 is released and then buy equipment based on actual information instead of just guessing?

Surround Sound Setup Question
Brisse replied to walker450's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You are correct about home theater, but games are indeed different. There have been a few games that worked like you descibe but they are very old. I don't know of a single game since the release of Windows Vista that can encode a Dolby or DTS stream. You might see the Dolby logo sometimes, but that's usually because the game has Dolby Headphone or similar technology built into it, and that's something entirely different. Anyway... You have to read the original question once more, because we are discussing things that won't help the original poster. Here was the question: I marked some important details in bold. Note that it says "output". This is reffering to the soundcards output, not the game. Also note that it says "Live", and "Interactive". These are not decoders. They are encoders. Last thing: It say DCS, and I can assure you DCS does not have any encoders build into it. -
Everything will be turned upside down when DCS2 is released. This is not the best time to go shopping for a DCS rig.

Surround Sound Setup Question
Brisse replied to walker450's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This is wrong. Games do not matter becouse they are not part of the equation. The soundcard recieves the audio data from the game in multichannel PCM and then encodes it to Dolby Digital or DTS in "realtime" and sends it out through the SPDIF output. The reciever then decodes the signal. What you should choose depends on what your receiver is compatible with. If it's compatible with all the formats, then I would recommend to set your soundcard to PCM for listening to stereo music in as high quality as possible, and either Dolby or DTS for games where you need surround sound. For movies, I recommend bypassing the SPDIF output so that the original Dolby or DTS stream from the movie reaches the reciever without the soundcard interfering. If you were to set your soundcard to Dolby while looking at a movie encoded in Dolby Surround, then the stream is converted from Dolby to PCM and then to Dolby Live before it's outputted though PCM. This severely degrades the quality. Remember, PCM is lossless, while Dolby and DTS uses lossy compression but is necessary to get more channels than stereo. -
Phenom 2 x4 965be replacement?
Brisse replied to BFBunny's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The FX series will be the last CPU's compatible with your motherboard, so there's no reason to wait for anything new to come out. The next AMD CPU's in the high performance segment isn't going to be released until next year, and it's using a different socket. Edit: Ah, I did not realize you wrote that you had to change your motherboard anyway. Disregard what I wrote :) Might as well go with Intel then I guess. -
Phenom 2 x4 965be replacement?
Brisse replied to BFBunny's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
By the way, you might want to wait a little with deciding on a new CPU. DCS2 with the new rendering engine is just around the corner. You might want to see what people write on the forums once that gets released and see how the CPU's compare in DCS2 instead of the current version, which will become obsolete. -
Phenom 2 x4 965be replacement?

The FX-8350 is significantly faster than what you have now. I have no idea where you get "1-5%" from, but I can tell you it's bullshit. Multiply that with ten, and you might be closer to the truth. Note that 50% more CPU power does not give you 50% framerate increase in your average games, because games utilize the CPU very poorly. That will change in the future with games going to DirectX12. FX-8350 is performing really well with games in DX12 and Mantle. I had a CPU like yours a long time ago, (many years) and upgraded to a x6 1100T. That was a really good upgrade for the money. Then I had that for a few years and went to the FX-8350 which I have had for perhaps half a year now. Not quite as big upgrade as 965 to 1100T, but still worth it considering the good price I got the FX for. The Intel fanboys will tell you AMD is a wasteland, but it's really good value for the money, especially when it's compatible with your old motherboard. Comparing the FX-8350 and 4790k is just stupid, because the Intel CPU is three times more expensive, and you would have to change your motherboard and memory. The FX-8350 is a sensible choice in your situation. -
Upgrading to Windows 7 Pro Question
Brisse replied to SharpeXB's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
No, you don't have 24GB of VRAM. That's not how it works. VRAM does not add up when you use multiple graphic cards. Each card has to load the same data into it's own memory, so the data is mirrored. It is the equivalent to RAID1 when speaking about storage. You can add as many 12GB video cards as you want. The software will still see it as 12GB. Note that this might change with Windows 10 and DirectX12, but in the current situation it's how it works. DCS will not care if you use Home or Pro editions of Win7 by the way. There's no benefit to be had from 32GB of RAM when running current version of DCS. -
Hello! Marine engineer speaking here. The definition of a ship is that it has to be larger than 12 meters long and 4 meters wide. If it's smaller then it is a boat, but in most cases it's fine to say boat for anything that fits the definition of a ship. This is an often cited description but it's not a formal definition, so not entirely correct.

He's not wrong though, because the 9xx series is backwards compatible so technically they are both dx11 and dx12 cards, and thus included in the "100%" that HiJack mentioned. dx12 is a bit different from previous iterations though. It will most likely work with older cards that wasn't specifically designed as dx12 cards from the start. That means there will be advantages by using dx12 even if you have hardware that only officially supports dx11.

I hate these threads. They are everywhere and they are nothing more than advertisements, even though it's unlikely that the OP is affiliated with any of the companies involved. Nope! Mantle is not dead. AMD has given Khronos Group access to the code and Mantle will become part of the "next generation OpenGL" aka. Vulcan. AMD promised that Mantle would go open source. This is them fulfilling that promise.

Few concerns with DCS. Why does the Mig29 fly 1700kmh?
Brisse replied to marchand73's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
They are from the old Lock On series which was not focused as much on realism. They brought them into DCS so that fans of the Lock On series could enjoy the planes in the updated game engine and terrain of DCS. It's something people were asking for, and Eagle Dynamics answered their prayers. Hopefully these will be updated at some point, so that they fit better into DCS World. They have already done so with Su-25, Su-27, A-10 and F-15C. Su-33 was also updated, but not as much as the others. It got the 6dof cockpit and new 3d model, but still has the old flight dynamics from Lock On. So it's history you see. DCS has it's roots in Lock On and the Flaming Cliffs series. Many fans of those older games appreciate that these planes were brought into DCS. Don't treat them as DCS content. Don't judge DCS for having them included. Judge DCS by using the DCS-branded modules instead. No one is forcing you to use these Lock On/Flaming Cliffs stuff. -
Okay I managed to get it running now. It was a big pain though. I was close to giving up. I think the problem had something do do with the activation process crashing, so I had to force it to shut down using ctrl+alt+delete, but when I tried to run it again it would not work because it said an activation process was already running. I know, but when you come home with your new CPU in hand, eager to fire it up, DCS and Starforcce is the last thing that crosses your mind. Once you mounted the CPU, it's too late to deactivate, and there's the problem. No way I was changing back to my old CPU just to deactivate, and then change CPU again and activate. Way too much work. Good thing we have a lot of activations (10?) to start with, but the whole "DRM is transparent to the consumer" argument is so invalid. It's pure bullshit.

Wasted an hour of my precious time on this now. None of the stuff I'm reading here on the forums is working. So much for "hassle free and transparent copy protection". It's not the first time either. Last time was when I upgraded my CPU. One single component changed, and every single module stopped working and it took me several hours before they finally managed to reactivate (wasting a reactivation per module in the process). Maybe it would be easier to become a pirate instead...

[RESOLVED] Soviet Pilot looking for lost MiG after 1.2.15
Brisse replied to Capt_Haddock's topic in General Problems
In the changelog they mentioned that you should deactivate the module and then activate it again. Don't know if this is related to your problem, but maybe it is... -
Remember it like it were yesterday. In fact, this is the first time I'm excited because of a remake of an old game.

AMD Catalyst Omega coming 9th Dec
Brisse replied to Mustang's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
If in doubt, you can always check AMD's own uninstall guide. They recommend you do this every time before installing a new driver. http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx -
AMD Catalyst Omega coming 9th Dec

Yes it does Bucic. If you choose the advanced/custom install option, you will clearly see that. I always do that so I can uncheck all the stupid bloatware that is installed if you choose the quick option. -
AMD Catalyst Omega coming 9th Dec

Anyone tested DCS yet? I tried Arma3 on my 6950 and noticed no difference. I did not bother to benchmark DCS before updating. -
Nice video! Love the Czech sense of humour and the modesty displayed in the video. It was not just another stupid video glorifying some war machine. It showed off the beauty of Iceland very well. Thanks for posting!

AMD Catalyst Omega coming 9th Dec

Impressive how much hype they created just by putting the word "Omega" after "Catalyst". -
I did not get high hopes when I read the changelog yesterday, but these screenshots are pretty cool :)

0 - 30000 ft. in 60+ secs. Can the F-15 Eagle do it.
Brisse replied to Holbeach's topic in F-15C for DCS World
60+ seconds means anything between 60s and infinity so I'd have to say yes, it's possible :) -
How about using graphite for decreasing friction?
