I’m in the process of planning a new build for the year and have a few questions. I have been enjoying VR with my first gen gear over the past few years, but I want the gauges to be easy to read and bogeys realistic to spot and identify. Mainboards and CPU's 1. If ED implements Vulkan going forward, how will this influence the choice of optimal architecture for mainboards and CPUs? For example, will multicore / multithread have advantages in DCS that didn’t exist previously where the fastest core was king? 2. Is there a best platform winner going forward between AMD and Intel and which product line will be best? Vulkan and VR Performance 3. For those of us who have or will convert to VR as a primary display method for DCS, will Vulkan offer substantial performance gains? 4. Is there an obvious choice for the next generation headset? I know there are many threads on this, but I'm thinking I will at least wait to see what materializes out of the HP Reverb Gen 2 camp. 5. Will it become possible to use VR natively in DCS (independent of Oculus or Steam VR)? 6. Will Vulkan by default support VR SLI, or support it with just minor coding changes? I’m really liking the idea of having the smallest possible well cooled computer case, but obviously we have to go bigger if multi-GPU is in the plan.

Can I benefit from "Gigablast" service?

Btw ElCuco, I was in Enfield CT a few times to drive cars at this place called RC Madness... I wonder if it still exists? -

170 MB or 170 Mb, either way your probably fine. People often neglect considering upload speed. For example, I have fiber with 350Mbps down, but its only about 30 up. At another house, we has 30 down and 3 up..... You can imagine this is a problem. What if someone saturated the uplink by sending a file or the downlink by downloading a file while you're on short final? I think this is where some sort of QOS to prioritize the most important thing in life (i.e., the game) is useful.... Now if the MegaLoad or whatever they are calling it also cuts your latency and 10x, it may well be worth it. -
This stuff is great. Just bought it, now if my DCS pc wasn't a thousand miles away I'd be all set!

This is a cool idea, but why limit it to Jester? Why not be able to sit in and observe any slot?

VFR arrival procedure for Nellis runway 21
Cake replied to Donut's topic in DCS: Nevada Test and Training Range
You got it. I like that map. I’m especially looking forward to that area after they revamp ATC. -
VFR arrival procedure for Nellis runway 21

I was a little confused as to what you were asking for. A VISUAL APPROACH is an instrument approach procedure flown under IFR, remaining clear of clouds and keeping the airport or proceeding aircraft in sight, basically in VMC or ceiling>=1000ft vis >=3sm. A visual approach is not a VFR procedure. -

it sounds like you are looking for a charted visual flight procedure for that runway. A CVFP is specific type of visual approach procedure where you use landmarks as visual references instead of just the airport or a proceeding aircraft to follow. CVFP may have different minimums from a regular visual. CVFPs are not really all that common. I think the SIN CITY VISUAL Rwy 03L/R is the only CVFP for Nellis, although they may have something for 21 that isn’t published publicly? My guess is they just would just do normal visual approaches for the 21 direction. Also, it doesn’t make sense to me that they would make a general practice of simultaneously running departures and arrivals on reciprocal runways. That must be a DCS thing!? -
Why are the f14 instrument clusters so poorly designed?

Everything is relative ,,,,,, .https://goo.gl/images/qrWNHY -
according to the e-shop, 1070 is enough for high graphics settings, but not for VR.

I have 48 and have seen DCS use over 16 but never over 32 RAM

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. Ground handling is modeled in some of the aircraft, right? Taxi turn to quickly and you can ground loop and/or strike a wing?
-
The video with the porpoising was interesting. I guess no propellor to strike so what the hell!

I'm not sure why simulating tire pressures are important. Can't we just assume that the Mx guys have them set correctly to specifications?
-
Wait....seriously!!!???!!! The HUD doesn't show airspeed????
Cake replied to gmelinite's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Hmmm, great thought. It would be cool if, as pilots, we could have a personal Jester configuration that we worked out with him before jumping into the cockpit. I'd certainly appreciate certain airspeed callouts, some absolute and some relative. Obvious these would be situation dependent, e.g., you're getting slow.... I think somehow Heatblur has modeled this is well into the cockpit shake, but Jester could certainly help here. -
Sounds like the Rift S is going to be only a minor improvement over the Rift based on specs in the announcement. I was expecting something more significant.
-
How different would the flight model for a D hornet be. It would be kind of an interesting experiment for ED to do the back cockpit of the D and license Jester from Heatblur. Then sell it as a back seat only module for a reduced price, or as a upgrade for C owners.

Refueling - Jester is great, but he needs to learn when to shut up....
Cake replied to Cake's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
This makes sense. I’ve noticed some occasions where what he is saying totally doesn’t match what is happening when he says it. -
My reactions have been purely based on VR. I think others are speaking in terms of a traditional flat screen monitor. What makes spotting difficult in RL doesn’t fully apply to a monitor, because it involves scanning and focusing, where the monitor only involves looking at the correct screen real estate (focusing on the plane of the monitor is an easy given). That said, in VR if it’s difficult to even make out the existinance of an airplane head on same altitude at the other end of the runway, realistic spotting is nearly impossible without some magic in the mix.... Now, it could be that I have all the wrong settings. I’ll admit I cannot clearly read all the instruments in the VR cockpit. Given this, spotting an airplane at multiple miles away is a much harder task.... So, in my case it is partially the technology, but given that.... I’m really still hoping for a workable solution. For me a flat panel isn’t an option.

I think it seems about right. The fact that it may be a little exaggerated makes up for the fact most of us don't have setups with motion or vibration. I particularly like the wake turbulence effect.
-
+1 The hundreds digit is fine, but the thousands and ten thousands are both dark and worn out looking.... I know it goes with the "we are flying a 40 year old plane" motif, but I want my crew chief to swap this out for something that is legible, and all it needs is better contrast.

Cobra, Does it make sense to have the stick thumb wheel bound to an axis? I was thinking of setting this to be warthog throttle slider and liked the idea of tweaking it around center. Not sure how it would translate, but seemed worth a try.
-
Oh, for vampire, I was having the same problem so I sat a little forward and stretched up a little high to center my view, then I sat back and relaxed.... it was like lowering my seat and it helps with the view..... Otherwise the canopy frame is a real issue for refueling in VR.

I’ve had some luck taking off the IL and off the Viking. Always seem to get to 12,200. Jester says “that should quench our thirst”, but I can’t get it to take any more, even after 10 minutes on the basket. Can’t seem to have any luck refueling off the 135 at 26,000. Nose just won’t settle down for me. One thing that has helped a little for me is just a tiny bit of speed brake. Seems to make it a little easier to manage the sensitive thrust settings. I’m typically using around 40 sweep. No luck all the way forward or in auto.

So heading mode doesn’t follow the heading bug if you set it? That stinks.
