I like the idea of real world weather. Of course it should be optional, but we want realism, right?
-
The Spit and Me109 should only appreciate. The F-16 and Hornet, now those will be expensive to operate, but at least you’d own 5 airplanes.
-
Haha, well I guess that doesn’t help if you run out of petrol.
-
I thought the Hornet had an APU.

Funny I just sold a motorcycle. Doubtful I’ll every own a land vehicle as fast again. Anyway, it was 1500 miles (not as the crow flys, and I drove it in one day, so back in the saddle.

I agree. You can do everything on the warthog just by feel. Transitioning to the keyboard is difficult and breaks immersion. One more thing: Using the HOTAS is also much easier than clicking the cockpit in VR for many things.

Interesting sk000tch. I suppose it is possible to dead stick almost anything, but I’m not disagreeing with you. Maybe someone will be lucky and have their failure over the salt flats. I have a friend who flew fighters for many years starting on the Korean era. One of his very first flights in a single engine jet the instructor shut the engine down and told him to land it. Engine failures were quite common back then. Some time after the century series he shifted over to Boeing’s. He had a couple dozen dead stick landings in jet fighters and over 100 engine failures in his career. Luckily we have better reliability now.

I 100% agree with you that terrain scenery is less important than other things. However, I think even DCS sometimes places too much emphasis on eye candy. It’s doesn’t matter how cool things look if you can’t spot a bogey at realistic distances day/night/whenever. I guess I don’t agree that you can lack in the flight sim part though. If DCS doesn’t cut it as a flight sim, then it cannot succeed as a combat sim. Accurate simulation of everything about how DCS units (aircraft, missiles, bombs, rockets, projectiles) are handled is essential to realistic aerial combat.

This sounds cool. So you designed it and built it yourself. Awesome. Share some pics / info if you want.

I haven’t flown the real airplane, but I have flown enough different types to notice there must be some things missing from the flight model. The big standout to me is there seems to be little to no torque, p-factor, and spiraling slipstream effects. I could literally fly it under power to near a stall and the ball would stay centered with no rudder input. It was just too easy to fly for a short tail wheel. I just bought it, and the first thing I checked after flying it was to see if the rudder cheat was enabled, it it wasn’t...... I still think it’s fun and don’t regret buying it. Just a little surprised by how much easier it is to fly than any of the tail wheels I’ve flown.

Thank you and everyone else for the thoughtful responses. I’ll be hanging with my RIFT 6700 1080Ti setup until the next logical headset upgrade comes.

It’s very interesting how we all have very different reactions to the experience. I wonder if we all have different ways of processing the experience of flying so for some people a two dimensional representation is equal to better than 3D (VR). For me, flying in VR feels like flying in RL. The lack of 3D perspective on a flat monitor does more than break immersion, it lacks the cues I need to fly well. I get to fly full motion simulators for training at places like Flight Safety and CAE. With VR, I miss having all the real cockpit controls, but the visual perspective of VR is IMO better.

If I were in your situation I’d probably wait for the 3080 series to come out and hopefully reverb gen 2. VR is very convincing, but i think we’re too close to next gen in GPUs, CPUs, etc to justify a major upgrade today with hopefully only a few more months before next gen stuff rolls out. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s getting better and better.

Wow, got a very quick response from support. Apparently the BS2 upgrade key is good for the full version of BS2 in latest DCS. So, this was all unnecessary!
-
Anyone have any idea how long the support ticket + BS1 steam shot process + BS2 upgrade serial number takes? Last time I contacted support was in 2013 and it took over five months for the ticket to get answered!!!! After spending an hour searching forums/I finally found the directions for opening a ticket and sending a steam screenshot. I think it would be helpful if BigNewsey added some better detail on the sticky to save us some time.

Arcade games can be fun, but DCS doesn't seem like one at all. I think minus the kinesthesis it is more challenging to have a sense of speed / energy.
-
The only issue I have with my VR experience (limited by RIFT - so I expect newer VR is much improved) is that I find aircraft spotting unrealistically difficult and then once acquired I find it very difficult to maintain visual on a target unless it is very close. It's been somewhat of a deal breaker for me. Makes me want to just head to a formation server or do bounces on a carrier.

New LHD Amphibious assault ship available
Cake replied to Jafergon's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Nicely done. -
Interestingly, the email they just sent me stated that the expiration would be extended if I made a purchase, which I did last week, but really, like everyone else said it’s impossible to spend them anyway. They should just give us a straight up credit for these toward any future purchases.

+1

Sounds like the LOC Rwy 27 circle to 18R at Memphis.
-
I forgot about that. Those attacks must have been "unprecedented".
-
I have a bunch of bonus points, too. Just bought three new modules, but there was no way to use bonus.... This was a great way to reward us for having bought nearly every module. What a joke.

Agreed. My question is more of what's next and how will this affect system choice for DCS in the future as opposed to the current implementation? According to Nvidia, the tech is or would be available to do this in RTX and it is compatible with Vulkan. Specifically, Nvidia states that and that - bold font is my emphasis See https://developer.nvidia.com/vrworks/graphics/vrsli

Thanks for responding Sysmonkey. My understanding so far is pretty similar to yours, but I've seen a material from Nvidia addressing the idea that the RTX line is designed around the capability of supporting one GPU per eye. So now they have something called NVLink, which I guess is similar to SLI but much more capable, and more expensive? I thought the reason we don't have multi-GPU support for VR was because the Steam and Oculus APIs were not designed for it, but as VR headsets become more capable and more demanding of processing will multi-GPU make a comeback because someone else creates a new standard for VR? I'm thinking it might. I think DCS is basically close to a professional environment when it comes to hardware investments - It was a lot easier back when my state of the art investment was $159 for a Riva TNT AGP card to sim in Falcon 4 and Su-27 Flanker.
